  • door locks and the MOT

I have central locking so the doors are locked and unlocked remotely and I want to change the door handles so there wont be a key lock, just the button for releasing the catch.

Is it a requirement for there to be a key for unlocking the drivers door for the MOT?

Just as long as you tell the test station how to get the door open, it shouldn't be a problem as other makes of car don't have door handles.

Most cars do have one door that is able to be opened on a key in case of battery failure or the remote packing up. How are you proposing unlocking your car if the battery goes flat or the remote fails when the car is locked ?

I’m sure there is a requirement for at least one door that can be opened externally in case you are involved (god forbid) in an accident, this can be either be mechanically, normal door handle or via an external switch as used with some TVRs . My Cobra and many other kit cars only had internal mechanical handles but as they don’t have locking windows the handle could be reached from the outside. There is no requirement for fitting door locks.

sorry should have put "There is no requirement for fitting key locks."

I don't think there is an mot requirement as tvr's had electronic solenoids that popped the doors open with no external key. Half of them had the door button hidden under the wing mirrors.

Just petrol cap or flap needs to be lockable by either key or closed by flap.

I think i'll be ok then, there will be handles and a door release button as normal just no key lock. if it's a problem i'll just have to fit one somehow

Just to clarify there is no requirement for a door key lock to be fitted, you don't even have to have locks fitted at all, just a catch to hold the door closed
I always leave my doors unlocked when I get my car MOT'd mind you I always stay with the car
