      • Not sure Shaun but I seem to recall reading somewhere that the mini digger ones only put out about 40A. If you're just sprinting etc it should be ok but for road use with lights, heater etc it might struggle

        • I run the smallest Denso - it's 45 amp and just about OK. You have more room Shaun, so fit what you like + your car has little accessories.

I wouldn't get bogged down in the wiring straight away - we know you don't like that bit. I would firstly take off your bottom pulley and get with the grinder to make it a single pulley - most of us XE guys have done this.

This will make it easier when trying to line up the belt, straight edge etc. Then fabricate the alternator mount. Not going to lie to you and say it is easy, unless the person before has done most of this for you already. It needs to be straight and aligned in several axis / directions. You'll understand when you get into it. Get a belt now ( not necessarily the actual one, but enough to dry build the setup).

For me I found easiest way to sort the bracket out (limited space quite tricky) was to make a bottom bracket, then space the alternator along to get the belt running true in that plane. Then make a separate top mounting. Once you have tried it all out with a belt and proved it works without throwing the belt etc, then carefully remove the alternator and with more metal weld this between the two brackets making it one. Obviously either the top or bottom part needs to have the big adjustable slot, which you can steal from another cars bracket. Bosch Bosch, Job Done.

Others have made a crucifix type bracket. Just an idea. Make it fairly strong, or it will break as others on here have found out a few times.

          • ok nudger,, noted,, ive been there with my mate,, my denso he said has more amp out put than a later mini altinator and im running less draw so thats sorted,,allways say tho,
ile gladly check anything out that im told, thanks,
[birdy thats sound seeings you have bairly no space..
im not going to start on that pully tho,, just at the moment,
thers no garantee i wont be haveing to pull the motor out,
so i need to hear it run,, i will do that later as what i call a sunday job.
            much apresiate that tip tho,
when it runs[and on road] i will then start fiddling with other things,
i aint qwite got the e,p,s and corner weights in my brain yet but sinking in slowly.
now im not to botherd about basic wires,
something thats troubleing me is, i have 2 altinators in my hand,,
i have a plug in my custom made loom with a mini plug on it,,feels nice to me,,
haveing looked at the link that richspec gave me im wondering if i just plug the mini plug in it will work with the wireing in the car??
but thinking again it must do,[to much thinking again]
but as said again it has nothing to do with the brackets and mounting,
i can see it now, dont daylight help,,

            • Less thinking, more doing. If you don't have a welder or gas axe in your hand, then it doesn't count as "work". Stop the drumming and strumming and get with the radiator plumbing.

Remember when that JCB dug a hole next to your Mini? Well it was a bet. It's actually a grave, because you will sadly have departed this earth before the engine starts on your car. Now prove me wrong you mother!

Sorry, I felt I needed to slap someone. Just don't want to see you bog down on the electrics, when you can make some mechanical progress, I know you like smacking things with hammers.

                  • What I did with my alternator wiring:

                    1) Ran a largish gauge wire on ring terminals from the main battery live on the starter to the big bolt connection on the alternator.

                    2) Took a feed from the little brown and yellow wire you have on the standard mini alternator plug, and connected it to one of the spade terminals on the alternator.

But like you say, the wires aren't long enough, so you need to extend them. The only way you'll find out by how much, is by fabricating yourself an alternator mount.

In conclusion, get the thing mounted first, then we can help you with the wiring

                    • On the standard alternator plug, the right hand fat brown wire goes to the threaded bar on the alternator. This charges the battery and usually goes back to the starter or that box of arse on the inner wing. The spade type plug marked ign or in needs a switched live and the other spade type terminal gets the brown/yello wire which earths the dash light when it is not charging.

                              • The Crank Sensor should live behind your alternator when you've mounted it. The wire should bugger off the other way around the side of the cambelt cover on std vauxhall injection. Lets hope yours does not connect up the other side on your system, as you'd need a longer wire and its shielded + then it would be in bad exhaust fannimold territory.
