Even mega heat and the candle wax on nipples trick didn't work this time. Going to have to buy another joint, but lets see what the bar is like when its off first.

Maybe someone up there is trying to tell me something..

          This is the OK one:

You cant put a socket on it. It has been heated up with high heat torch, candle wax, WD40 you name it. Engineers vice will not grip the bar anymore and I mean a big vice. Have been using large Barco Adjustable with 0.75 metre pole, so approx 1 metre of leverage. Nada, nish , nothing. IT IS Goosed!

Yes but that deforms the rose joint Shaun. Anyhow - Man with Grinder 1 Rose joint Nil. It is off. And yes I still had to put a bar through the rose joint as you said after grinding back to nearly the threads. Rose joint deformed to buggery.

Good news is that the threads both on the bar and inside the rose joint were again fine. So I conclude that either the hole or the bar is not straight. Will now cut off approx 5/8th off the thread and buy another Rose Joint. If it tightens up badly again, the RJ should at least be in the right position for what I need . What a performance. Beer is calling me...

                  • Are you shortening a tie bar or did you get the rod bit and the part which attaches to the bottom arm separate?
I want to make some tie bars of my own that fix to my crossmember and not the frame. Need to make them about 3 inches bigger.

Hi Ben, yes my set up has slightly shorter bars. I already have a set on the car of the skinnier type, but I realized that there wasn't as much thread engagement on the female rose joints as I would like. So, I had bought some 2nd HD tie bars , the non rose jointed type. I have then chopped the normal mini front part off where you use rubber bushes and have threaded the bar to 5/8th UNF left Hand thread. So the idea should be I get the correct thread engagement say 1.5", have the bigger stronger diameter bars and by going left hand thread the tie bar will be on car adjustable to allow setting of the caster, which is a real pain when you have to keep removing either the rose joint or the hub end. Should have been a simple quick job, but has turned into a mission really.

I think if you are looking at 3 " longer you'd either need longer bar or have the square machined end remade to a longer length / combination of the two.

Yes I've been thinking that the bar maybe just a tiny bit oversize in diameter perhaps and that maybe why it is so tight.

Will get on and hopefully finish the front suspension and steering settings this weekend. Been Ebaying stuff to raise funds for bit and bobs to complete ready enough for an MOT. 2 rubber exhaust hangers have perished and snapped and I haven't even been anywhere yet.

Replaced a section of the petrol tank breather the other day, but again luck is against me as the small section that I cannot get at with out either removing the tank and / or the rear speaker, must be the bit allowing vapours into the boot. It feels perished. I should really get the proper one way anti spill valve / breather, instead of the one I've nicked off some other vehicle. It really smells strongly of fuel.

                            I won't let you ride me - no seriously I won't

                            • Just re-cut the thread on the other bar. Took several more passes, now the new RJ goes on, just. So either the bar has a tiny bend in it ,or the die is shist. Should be able to get the tie bars on now though.
