  • I am just waiting for mine to go wrong. So tightly packed. Does your cam belt look a little shiny on one edge. As in is it rubbing ?

Seems it doesn't rub. That would have actually been desired , instead of having to change the oil seal.

      • Hard to see from the under bonnet picture but are they tiny flecks of rubber in the oil?
I ended up using plenty of RTV auto sealant in the cam bolts on mine to try and stop leaks in that area.

It isn't the cam bolt which is lacking but the rubber seal itself.

There aren't any small rubber pieces in the oil, though the oil is a little grey.

          • Had this same issue with oil just as your photo. But it was not the seal it was the valve cover leaking oil at the front plate. clean and seal it, it will last for a race then let go on the next one. fixed it twice now. Hydro

            • Open heart surgery begins.

I used Permatex "the right stuff" to seal cam cover and cam plate, god it is strong and tough to clean off.

When removing the cam pulleys it was evident that it was indeed the oil seal which had failed as it came out of the plate with the pulley.

I now wait for the new cam plate form SC.

Was just easier! I have no tools to fit new seals.

                    • Time to time in my cams again.

Previously i had them set to 1mm of lift, this is the figure recommended by John at SC. i felt like the car made good power and the rolling road screen shot seems to support that, in that the shape of the curves are very similar to the graphs made available by SC.

However, there appears to be suggesting from with the community (Facebook and turbo minis) that 2.4mm (representable to 106 degrees) is best and that 1mm is "way out".

I wonder what the experience are of those who have timed the cams to 1mm or something else?

                      • RS cams? If so then when we set mine to 102/106 full lift as per original BMW spec we saw the power jump from 117 to 140 bhp.

                        • Sorry should have specified - LT cam.

So that was 117 with 1mm and 140 with 2mm and 2.4mm lift (roughly)?

                          • its all helpfull,, i cant work out why it seems the norm now to take your mini to a rolling road and already have done there job for them!?
thats provideing the vernier gogs are acseccable!!
maybe im out of date? lol ok just say.? i dont meen to sound like a koonta,
its possable for your R,R tuner to find the max power for you.
thats why the cam cogs are sold as ajustable?

shurely if there was a fixed place,, they would make them that way?
its possable that the art of getting you power from your main man has been lost , or has the main man lost his touch?
egsample> come on in and out without me haveing to work too hard or think too much!! even though its my job to get you 100% of what you can, EDIT> sorry guys i sound like your dad lol,

                            • Turns out I fixed the wrong thing!

As some of you may remember I had a major oil leak back in June. I was positive it was the camplate oil seals.

SO I spent the last 2 weeks "fixing" that. and degreasing the engine bay as the cam bale had sprayed oil everywhere.

I started it up this evening to be welcomed with the sight of oil spraying from cam belt again.

I now think it may actually be the seal on the lower fully (old camshaft position).
