Hi guys, what’s the best advice you can give me regarding engine preparation for painting silver, I see lots of you have done this, my engine is mucky & oily in places, I don’t have enough air capacity to use a shot plaster, what good ways do people find best for removing the old crud before painting, I’ve etch primer and engine paint.

My current head was covered in grease and crud, I stripped it down and the guy that did my head work left it in the parts cleaner for a while before having it ultrasonic cleaned, cane up like new!
However, if your not going to strip it down, then a GOOD pressure washer, followed by a good soaking with engine degreaser, followed by another pressure washing works well, don’t buy cheap degreaser though, it’s false economy, I quite like a degreaser by Chemical Guys, it’s made very light work of the oil spray underneath my car from an oil leak. If you clean it up enough then I wouldn’t bother with paint, however if you do decide to paint it, don’t bother with VHT paint, it’ll just flake off and look rubbish in a month.

Thanks for the info guys, definitely going to power wash it degrease it, I will check out the chemical guys, I have seen that vht paint but never used it, I was once told if you etch prime a engine block first then any paint will work, that’s why people have stated to colour code there engines the same colour as there car.
I called into Helmsley steam engine rally today, picked up some de-buring tools to go on the end of a drill, I’ve not seen these before there rather smooth, not like the harsh ones. I will have a play with these later on & see what the results are like ![]() |

I just saturated my block with degreaser and scrubbed it with a small wire brush, then more degreaser followed by an air dry. When dry, I then used metholated spirits and a rag to wipe it all down till the rag remained clean, then painted.
I used VHT silver engine paint without primer, and 2 years later its still there. |

Cheers for that, I’ve not thought about methylated spirits I’m thinking it’s going to take about 10-15 hours from start to finish, so I will start this week at the evenings whilst the weathers good cheers

Think I might do the rocker cover black, I know everyone goes for red, I might add a bit of red somewhere
