I ended up using a wee alternator for a Kubota tractor as space was tight (Micra conversion) and I did not want the alternator at the back of the engine. The downside is I am only producing 40 amps.
This is interesting as I could add a secondary charging circuit using this method. No room on the crank pulley but I found this modified water pump.

This is very interesting find!
Although strictly for race cars with absolute minimum load requirements!

Is your mini on the road? Do you have any issues with the 40A alternator? Idle, lights, wipers, heater all working ok?

No I am not on the road yet so no idea if 40A is going to be enough (Mini one couldn't have been much more than that!). I'm looking to convert all bulbs to LED (maybe not headlight at the moment). Heater will have a variable setting through a pulse width modulator. Only big draw will headlights and heated rear window.

The water pump generator would be a future addition if it was struggling to supply enough juice.
