I'm thinking about getting a gopro type camera to get some footage of trackdays next year, but I've never used them and have no knowledge of them and there seem to be several models available. I want to spend as little as possible as I'm tight and would rather spend the money on track time so are the cheaper models up to the job and are there any cheaper alternative brands that basically do the same thing?

Yes.. i bought one of these when they first came out, very happy for the money and does everything!
All Olfi action cameras and accessories are deeply considered for each type of user. Every camera comes with a 30-Day Money Back Guarantee. #onelifefilmit.
Youtube kills the quality but if you change the youtube settings its still good

Don't know what phone you have Gaz, but there were some pretty good apps for circuits. Some give you insight into the track itself and others will record your vids with all the speed, acceleration and braking info as well as lap times etc. That way you get the app, a cradle for phone and you can actually see where you drive better or worse... you get the picture.Whale Oil Beef Hooked!

I got a DB Power EX5000. £45 Amazon. Water proof and used it a load for snorkelling and scuba diving. Works great but can't get a sodding date stamp off the image.
Came with 2 batteries so one is always charged. And Wifi so you can send stuff straight to a phone/tablet. Including live images if you wanted to stick it somewhere and watch whats going on...

Forgot to mention. Useful to get one with wifi. Allows you to control the camera from a phone app. Main use I found is you can use your phone as a viewfinder to be certain it is capturing the image you want, rather than be kicking yourself after you are home and reviewing the footage. Also you can start/stop recording (useful if you're strapped into the car and can't reach the camera).

You have seen my video's Gaz. I use a Go Pro Hero 3. My son Luke bought it for our first track day and have been pleased with the quality of it.
The price was a bit off putting to me, but 4 years ago £300 bought the camera and a load of accessories. It still works fine.
I agree with previous comment about putting video online. It takes an age to upload sometimes. The quality of Facebook is terrible. YouTube is ok but if you watch the original then the YouTube the difference is unreal. Things may improve as technology gets better.
The thing is now getting a camera like this second hand is worth doing. They come up around £50 which is really good. Get one with the waterproof casing and the open back for the mic. That's how I get the great sounds on film too.
An example...
The original is far better.
Helmet mounted is also good but not many tracks allow it.

If you haven't already made a purchase ...here are a few options for ya. I've got a GoPro3+ black and a 4 silver and find em great...
Helmet mounted (great for a real POV feeling) and on rear screen in my Clio:
Mounted rear facing to my rollcage in the clubman:
Finally, you don't have to buy a stand alone cam. This is recorded on my iPhone, screen mounted with suction cup and using relatively cheap Harry's lap timer app:
