2008 sees the start of the first 16v Mini Club sprint championship, man and machine in perfect harmony, the squeal of tyres, jostling for position, living on the edge, champagne…….am I thinking of Formula 1??
This is actually one of the cheapest forms of motorsport but is still great fun. It only needs a non race licence and as you are the only car on the track there is a lesser chance of damaging it, always a bonus! And it’s suitable for complete beginners, as long as you can drive, you can compete.
The 16v championship is being sponsored by Watson’s and has its own dedicated board within this forum. It will be filmed by the new Mini Video Magazine, so if you fancy seeing your baby hit the shelves immortalised on DVD, grab yourselves a set of overalls, stick in a rollcage and go! (There is a tad more to it, but listing it all doesn’t sound so snappy!)
For complete details on how to apply for your MSA licence, Auto66 membership and what is required safetywise go to the 16v Championship board
http://www.16vminiclub.com/forums/viewforum.php?f=26
Championship rules are there too, the most important being not to take it too seriously, points will be deducted!
Last season saw the battle of Honda v Vauxhall
Allan McD in his Vauxhall on the start at Teesside Autodrome May 2007
Mark D’s Honda ….at speed!
This was a great day out with more 16v club members being there to show support, so even if you’re not racing come to the track and watch and make yourself known. The banter from the boards is carried on in the paddock with the tongue in cheek rivalry between the engines. Mark D is supremely confident in the Honda supremacy, Allan McD and Andy S are on the side of the Vauxhall and Smurfy seems set to challenge it all with his Suzuki. Come on lads (and lasses of course) we need more drivers!! It is not compulsory to enter every event, it’s entirely up to you how many rounds to enter.
The dates and venues for 2008
24th March-Croft
20th April Three sisters (Wigan)
3/4/5 May Scarborough (2 Rounds)
31 May Teesside Autodrome
6th July Three sisters
3rd Aug Harewood
10 Aug Teesside
17th Aug Scarborough
30 Aug Elvington
27th Sept Elvington

VTEC vs VAUXHALL
Hello
I have been on this forum since October 2003 and have learnt a heck of a lot from it, and from general browsing, one of the most common newbie questions is: “Which is better, vtec or vaux??” and I wanted to find that answer for myself.
I think I’m one of the first club members to have owned a vtec and a Vauxhall mini and have had this very question asked to me… so here’s my attempt at trying to arrange my brain into words and come to a conclusion and explain why it’s so difficult to compare them………
VTEC:
I ran a B16A2 in standard form for about 18months before selling it on. Not being mechanically minded watsons rally carried out the conversion for me.
The vtec conversion really is very good with no torque steer to speak of and is a nice light engine, glorious rev limit, and as far as the noise it can’t get better!! The vtec felt light and nimble to throw around too and was very predictable and gave me the grin factor that I was after, top speeds of 130mph+ it felt very stable on the road.
On track the handling was very good too and proved to me these conversions can get the power down well and in a stable fashion!
The vtec engine is incredibly reliable and although having a few initial teething problems with simple things such as brackets is a very solid and reliable conversion which I drove daily for well over a year…(with no speedo!)..
And the noise OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
CONCLUSION
A fantastic conversion you can drive with confidence and scare your mates in and chase scoobies with! great reliability and was my daily drive.
Now it’s time to visit the dark side…….
VAUXHALL:
Well, what can I say?? I’ve already been through about 10 pairs of trousers since owning this monster, it’s a red top 2.0xe more or less standard but with some inlet mods.
The kit is again very solid on this conversion with the engine being heavier of course than the vtec. Unlike the vtec the torque steer is absolutely intergalactic! I guess this is due to the driveshaft mods on the vtec conversion so it can go properly in a straight line. The Vauxhall in comparision is a LOT harder to control and keep in a straight line and has proven to be extremely dangerous too(!)
I really need the dry weather to come to properly find out the limits of this car, if it’s not a sunny day, dry and with warm tyres it’ll wheelspin or torque steer you into a nearby field unless your in fourth or careful in third. You have to be SO careful where you boot it, road surface/bumps/temperature of tyres, it’s just all so much more sensitive than the vtec and as a result needs to be treated with a lot more respect.
The power steering although strange to get used to is an awesome idea and works really well, especially with so much ‘all over the place’ action.
All my friends say the experience as a passenger is totally totally different to the vtec which was quite interesting. Also I can’t get anyone in to it again for a second ride!! so I’m guessing it’s a lot scarier and it’s no surprise really, the acceleration is VERY brutish which I guess is rather unnerving, and there’s just that ever feeling presence of monster power humming away waiting to be unleashed.
Above 90mph the Vauxhall feels a lot pokier it has to be said. My eyes left my head at 120 the other day and couldn’t believe how quick I got to it, and it was pulling hard still where as the vtec start to fanny about after 120, this feels like it wants to know how big your balls are, and will just keep going till you stop! (Mick stopped at 137mph but it could go more) I’m guessing this is due to a torquier engine than the vtec. over 100mph it is definitely sketchy compared to the vtec too, I haven’t quite decided whether that’s a good or bad thing yet really!!!!!
Reliability has also been excellent on a day to day basis.
COMPARING THE CARS THEMSELVES
One difficulty I have in this conclusion is that the Vauxhall is a lot more finished than my vtec ever was. The vtec was a highly modified mini yes, but was on a kind of ‘bog standard’ level. The Vauxhall has flip front/fuel cell/fully stripped/autoplas dash/ power steering and tonnes of other little bits that I never even thought of doing that make just that bit more desirable and special to me, that would sway me more to the Vauxhall I guess but this is about the driving…..
So I know what you’re all saying, “shut up and say which you think is better!”
Such a hard question......
I guess the vtec is the James Bond of the conversions where as The Vauxhall is Rambo on a very angry mission!!!!
007 vs Rambo………Who would win???? Do you know????? I don’t…….
It’s so so so hard to say “that one’s better” on either of them really, like I said the Vauxhall is the more complete car and has far more mods on it which makes it hard but again this is about the drive and I think still wins me as my car of choice..
So the vtec is more drivable and safer to drive hard yes, but I get more grin from the Vauxhall!!!
So….. I say Vauxhall!!!! However this DOESN’T alter the fact that my next mini will most definitely be a vtec….
Confused???? Not as much as me!!!!!
Thanks
Joe
