Default 1.6 k series on 10's

Thought it was about time I started my own build thread.

Ive owned my mini for over 12 years and for the last 5 its been in the garage undergoing a serious makeover!

I reversed it in one day to replace the radius arm bushes and its not been out since

A wee spec of rust on the bootlid led to a rub with some sandpaper and an hour later the rear end was stripped

So since then I have been cutting and grinding, welding and grinding, grinding and welding... you get the idea.

Since I found this site though a couple of years ago the plan changed and im now going k series

So some pics of how the car looked and the fateful radius arm day...

I should never have carried on with this shell in hindsight, but you know the story "it didnt seem that bad to start with, but it just escalated..."

I have bought over 20 individual panels for the car and this doesnt include bootlid, doors or flipfront

Anyway, some randoms of the work carried out...

work on the boot floor...









New floor pans, sills and repairs to inner arch areas...



Checking rear subframe fits in with new mounting points - it did



Replacing and tubbing rear arches...

















My front end and my Bro's car that I was later to acquire!



Shagged scuttle area in need of repair. Whole scuttle was replaced in the end



Scared incase I loose all this so going to upload now.

Looks like a lot of work there mate I'm doing the same with mine atm- bit more welding and a lot of bodywork to do before I can even think about my engine build
But it's looking good!

I discovered that my roof was rusty - on the inside

Turns out that my sunroof had been leaking and the water had been running down the a pillar and thats what led to the floorpans and sills rotting!

Not only that but the water had been soaking the insulation above the headlining and thats what caused this...





The outside of the roof didnt have a blemish on it, but it was only a mtter of time till it came through

I could have ground alot off with the grinder but some was very pitted and I wasnt taking the chance of having it finished and regretting it when the bubbles appeared - so just by chance at the same time I took possesion of my Bro's car aswell

It didnt look too bad but was generally shagged and was pretty much in a lethal state, so.....
















and ended up with this



took the rest to the local tip in the back of my old mans voyager







So next was the task of measuring and marking up my shell (about 20 times)








After bracing the shell... I cut off my roof



I stepped all the cuts in the pillars aswell as welding plates inside the a and b posts and plates across the inside of the c posts. Ive also welded large tabs to my cage which bolt to the upper seatbelt mounts (dont need these anymore due to harnesses) so I hope the roof is plenty strong again


So once all the cuts were made the donor roof was strung up and lowered into position. I left a wee bit too much on the donor roof as I didnt trust myself not to end up with a roof chop, and then trimmed away till it was a good fit.













Thought I should check all the glass fitted




So it took about two full days to dipose of doner and tack the roof into place, and about another day to finish off the welds and grind down

All because of a bloody leaking sunroof seal

Your lucky my local tip won't take any car parts let alone a whole car chopped up

The tip didnt really have a choice as we shot in dumped it and left sharpish

Did go back a couple of days later though and it was all gone


Evo - how do you recognise the car? Had 13 inch black 4 spokes when it was on the road and was noisy as hell

Oh and as for replacing the skin - I asked on here and got lots of advice but in the end the thought of trying to find all the spot welds made me dizzy and the inside of the a pillars were raspberryed too.

recognise the car when it cut about wiht the black/polished revo's just seen it driveing about, and i believe ( could be coincidence, i.e. someone else) your bro approached me at the maryhill BP garage asking if i wanted to by some 12" revo's, must have been around the time his car went off the road, a good while back now i think!

anyways im off out to play in my mini, its cold and dry you should come out for a spin sometime

Evo - I'll ask him and see if he remembers. He never had 12's though - only 13's.

Dont rub it in that yours is back on the road - youve seen how much I ve still got in front of me

So a spin in yours would be very motivating!!!

Hi Badger

The boot was goosed. The rear valance had actually fallen clean off!

The pictures make it look way better than it actually was - hence the reason to cut it up. I saved what I could from it but what went to the tip was scrap. The bumpers look ok in the pics to but the undersides were rotted

The only thing I forgot to remove were the straps to stop the bootlid falling open was gutted about them

Next job was scuttle and bulkhead repairs.

I was originally going to just replace the ends but it seemed easier to replace the whole panel than try and align the end in so went for it and it was a breeze

Removed old scuttle by drilling out welds and cleaned back the paint



Made some repair panels



Painted area that will be awkward to get to later and the underside of new scuttle




Alignment seems good so spot weld all along top and sides - easiest panel Ive done

lmao on the boot straps just looked been a few months ago you last updated has it got any more things done too it and again well done i would have left them for someone else to do as seems alot of work.
but at least you no it will be solid for a while.
keep us updated mate would like to see it finished or close lol.
