Ok - just been looking in the Honda manual and was wondering if anyone had used the Honda sensor switch for the fan or have you all used aftermarcket ones?

I used the Honda fan relay driven by the Honda sensor and the ECU. The temp sensor feeds the ECU as well and is used for optimizing engine performance. The ECU then picks the relay which turns on the cooling fan. It means no aftermarket sensor and no worrying about setting up the right temp for the fan to turn on.

I have used the honda sensor to turn on my fan and was just wondering how my temp compaired to everyone elses. i am using a mini temp gauge connected to the honda temp sensor and the engine seems to be running at around 100 degrees. Is this about right - the fan doesnt seem to cut in for a while after this. I guess as long as the fan is connected up to the Honda sensor I cant go wrong really - just feels a bit hot to me thats all!!!!!! :)

As you know using all honda gear in mine.

The fan came on for the first time at the weekend, stuck in trafic going to bristol mini show. Temp gauge never goes above 1/2 on the honda gauge.

Well Mine doesnt seem to be turning on at all under normall driving and only cuts in when the mini gauge gets to around 130-140 which seems a little highth to me?

I dont know what temp Vtec are supposed to run at but 140 sounds a bit late for the fan to cut in.

Is your gauge a boggo mini one. Might be worth testing it in a pan of boiling water just to see how accurate it is.

Whats a boggo one!! Its a smiths electric one

just for info , my fan kicks in about 96-98 , and then turns of when it goes down to 89-90.

I asked Geoff about the sensors and he said the Honda ones can be used with the smiths gauges - might have to get a different one. Is this sensor not needed for the honda ecu or is this a different one?

Boggo one.

Crappy bit of original mini kit, or highly expensive, but supposedly accurate one!

Probably worth checking it out just to see. I bought a cheap Sunpro mechanical one through the Gunsons website, and when tested it was suprisingly accurate. Calibrated in farenheit though so my fan cuts in at 200 ish

Well is just a new Smiths Magnolia one - dont know how accurate they are but I will have to find out

Where do I put this into the engine - or do I put it into the rad hose?

Right - easy stuff - thanks.

>>bit late on the topic but hey!<<

My fan only works with an auxilary switch, I think it does come on on its own but not till about 3secs before things start melting.

Until I get a decent thikc radiator I constantly run mine, especially with the warm front approaching..

I have a good kenlowe rad on mine - seems a bit of a waste that it is not being used much!

i have a Honda rad of a civic vti and a kenlowe fan strapped to it.

I have the standard Honda VTi radiator with a nissan fan

No problems so far and never gets past half way even at castle coombe it was fine. I drive it hard most of the time and have had times when I've been in heavy trafic for ages and still the fan doesnt come on.
I nearly thought it didnt work but it does

I run the Honda temp sensor hooked up to the Mini guage. The guage is the original one from the car 1978, 3 clock dash. The car runs with the guage just about 3/4 to H, and the fan only kicks in while sitting in traffic, never while moving. You can see the guage creep up to almost touching the H on the faceplate, and then dropping off once the fan starts. I have not measured the temp yet, but it has never boiled over and runs well, so I am assuming all is OK.

Well I recon mine must be fine - my gauge is also sitting at 3/4 of the way up and only comes on at the very end so I am sure I will be ok.

What rad are you using darren? My car gets soooo hot in the cabin - I am thinking of putting a/c in it - bit ott though. Its just so hot though :?

PaulAmes

A/c pump could be located above the alternator - I am sure there is enough room there - I have an a/c pump in the garage.

FYI: the B series has three different water temp sensors. one for the ECU, one for the guages and one for the radiator fan.
Rad fan is either on the back of the block on a B16a1 or on the thermostat on a B16a2, B18c4 and I'd think C5/6 too, oh and B20 :D
Sensor for cluster is on the side of the head near to the vtec gubbins.
ECU sensor, I forget

I thought the ECU sensor was the same as the instrement one? I forget what else neds to be installed now? Someone?

08-06-2004, 03:52 PM
I use an switch on every radiator which switches eaches fan... no ecu connection but mine is not a vtec also..

Not sure what turns on the fan, I just hooked up to the same connector as the Honda Fan. I assume from the wiring diagram that the fan relay can be picked fromeither the sensor in the block or the ECU.

Most Hondas have a temperature sensor in the bottom of the rad. Those that have air conditioning have two fans. On my Accord the fans even come on after the car is shut off if they read too hot and stay on til the temperature is back to normal. JS
