Hey all!
think this is my first post on here so il introduce myself! im Fatlad, im 20 and im doing motorsport engineering at coventry university.
i made the mistake of going to the 16v mini club meet last week with dazzler and the mini-ota. i say mistake as now ive seen how quick some of the cars are ive decided to sell up the 1430 a-series to fund a 16v build!
its probably going to be 4age power but im not 100% yet was looking at the 1.8vvc k series or maybe a red top. but seen as how i helped dazzler out on the mini-ota i think it will probably go that way! id love a 20v but they dont seem to turn up very often.

http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e291/coxxy1/jaffa/DSCF1027.jpg

plan is to do the swap while im off uni over the summer and hopefully get in a track day with it early autumn. if my 1430 goes for good money il book and pay for the 16v trackday to give me something to aim for! lol.

think im going to do a frame based around the standard mini one and probably end up putting the rad in the boot. would like to keep it on my 10" wellers but i cant see it happening so will be looking for some 13x8 wellers if anyone knows where i can get them from? i saw them on xevalvers thread and love em!
going to start by buying a complete aw11 mr2 or a corolla then go from there!

Good to meet you at the club meet. Good luck with your project but you know you want to go K series  .

fatlad
03-06-2009, 08:03 PM
yer was good to meet you too mate! i would go k series but it would have to be a 1.8 vvc like yours and the appear to be quite dear. wish id got a spin out with you, dazzler said it was a rocket!

Get some pics of the mini up! If it's the one in back ground in one of Dazzlers pics, it looks dead cool!

fatlad
03-06-2009, 08:28 PM
pictures up! think the one in the back ground of dazzlers is martins car. the orange clubbie? he is currently in the process of putting a 4age in the back of another one!

found some more pictures of my build up to the stage its at now.

i added cross braces, doorbars, dash bars to a safety devices 6 point cage and welded it all in. all done in 38mm cds. fish mouthing tubes is a bitch to do with an angle grinder + hack saw!

hi fatlad was just wondering what arches u used they look bigger than miglias and cover them 6x10,s well :)

fatlad
03-06-2009, 11:13 PM
they are curley extra wide miglias. the wellers have so much dish i can fit my metro turbo 4pots behind them! i think they must have been a back door job as ive never seen another set like them! lol

Go for the 4a-ge matey! you can always swap to 20v later cuz they bolt straight up to the C52 box.

To get one in a round nose you are at least going to need megajolt - best get sucking up to Daz.

There must be something in Staffordshire water that makes us want Toyota power - either that or we're all tight a**sed gets.

fatlad
04-06-2009, 08:43 AM
lol yer well im Cumbrian so that instantly makes me tight! lol. cheers for the advise! i was thinking to go megajolt possibly on bike carbs. might even get a mega squirt if the gay-series goes for good money!

pantera2075
04-06-2009, 09:18 AM
20v's come with throttle bodies as standard - you'd be looking at £5-600 for an engine without the ecu tho.

I could help with Megasquirt too theoretically..... seeing as mine should be running on one next week

fatlad
04-06-2009, 10:44 AM
oooooeee throttle bodies  ! what cars do the 20vs come in? they dont seem to come up that often on ebay. are they import only? good luck with the squirt!

Joah
04-06-2009, 11:08 AM
did you make the box in the bulkhead or buy it? I need something like that to house my webers in....

pantera2075
04-06-2009, 11:21 AM
Early -mid 90's Levin and Trueno, import only, but there's a few about. Fensport sell them, and an ebay search quite often pops one up.

Otherwise there's the GZE supercharged option??

Owen
04-06-2009, 05:00 PM
PLease keep it on the 10's! It looks sooooo mean!

fatlad
04-06-2009, 07:39 PM
yer i made the bulk head box wasnt too hard jus two lengths of angle iron in the vice and a bit of persuasion with a hammer then cut the side plates and welded it all in!

really want to keep it on the 10's but if it spins its sack off i think 13x8 wellers are the next best thing!

fatlad
07-06-2009, 12:33 AM
and so it begins!!!!
the a-series is all but sold and i have jus bought this!

got it here for a bargain!

looks like it is going to be an 'ota after all!

i have just fitted a 998 to get me going for the time being. quite looking forward to the possibility of more than the 15mpg i got out of the 1430!

plan is to keep the mini running as long as possible by getting a bulkhead from the scrappy to build the frame around. got a spare subby courtesy of dazzler so all is looking well so far! looking forward to getting it all in my garage and getting the welder and grinder out! lol

today i have been tidying up the wiring and made a dash board to mount the acewell on. well chuffed with how the dashboard is looking has tidied up the interior no end. the acewell is mounted and the rev limiter will be on tomorrow. got the 998 slung in to get me back up north. hopefully should be going to fetch the corolla at the start of the week.

will get some pics up tomorrow.

pantera2075
08-06-2009, 08:10 AM
Mmmmmm, smallport.

That's got 8 bhp more than Daz's. (And mine for that matter)

When you think about it, a reliable 130bhp from an n/a 1600 is pretty good going - especially when it's from 20 years ago.

08-06-2009, 09:24 AM
Hi mate, good luck with ya build, I will be watching it closely. Could you document the frame building with LOTS of pics?Lol, I will have to build my own frame and im looking at a few guidelines but pics would help a great deal.

fatlad
09-06-2009, 01:18 AM
il do my best! lol.

got a bit bore done today. decided to go back to basics! the dash is pretty close to being finished now. trying to get the car half descent and working as it is before i start trying to fit the new engine! so basically getting the wiring for the lights sorted properly and just genrally tidying the job up! made a temp sensor adaptor for the acewell to fit into the 998 just so i can get it all up and running sweet as a nut. used an old mini temp sensor and drilled the middle out and glued in the acewell sender. will upload some pics when i get a chance!

spNOam
09-06-2009, 11:52 AM
Any pics of the acewell dash? I have one of these to fit & would appreciate some inspiration.

fatlad
22-06-2009, 12:16 PM
so... bit of an update! the corolla idea fell through because the engine i was going to have had a nocking big end, so the idea now is to find a full mr2 and use it as a donor!
heres the dash:

yer thatd be great cheers! need to find one fairly close to carlisle. i can trailer but cant go too far as the tow cars a 4ltr srt 6 petrol and it costs me a fortune to get anywhere! cheers for the help! toying with the idea of plucking up the money for a 20v! hmmmmmmmmmm....!

Schizzo
23-06-2009, 06:17 AM
Thats weird, In south africa the 20v sells for less than the 16v,all the 20v here are imported silvertops, black tops are the real hens teeth

plans have changed! i got offered a rover 200 vi for cheap money and as i was having no luck with the toyotas i thought why not! so im soon to be joining the k club!
just stripped the head down and had it skimmed also replacing two exhaust valves as they where slightly bent, previous owner had done cam timing wrong! no big deal! so the plan is to get the engine running in the 200 then rip it out and start the transformation! still ubdecided whether to go down the mini or metro subby route. ideally i want to keep the pg1 box as i can get an lsd from a brm cheap. but ill just have to see what happens! any advise on subby/ gearbox choice apreiciated! want to maintain mini track and want an lsd.

fatlad
16-10-2009, 11:14 PM
any chance of this getting moved to the rover section?

decided to go down the metro subframe route as it will be easier to get the pg1 box in and i like how the frame is much beefier than the mini one.

apart from that im cracking on with getting the engine goin in the bubble first. refitted the head and timed in all the vvc mechs (what a ball ache!) done the cam timing and reconnected all the wires, just need some sparkplugs and oil and i can try to start it up.

going to the scrappys tomorow to pick up a metro frame and suspension.

how do i change the thread title?

cheers, chris

also the 10x6 wellers may be up for sale at the right money or may consider px/ swap for 13x7/8s. they fit on with metro turbo 4pots and are the only ones ive ever seen with this much dish!

craig 1010cc
22-10-2009, 11:36 AM
If you use a MGF subby (basically a metro front subby), it is designed to take a K series engine and use a PG1 box (and there fore the drive shafts from an MGF are th eones to use as well). You'll need a few bits from a metro subby to get the steering side working.

How much are you looking at for the wellas?

fatlad
26-10-2009, 12:15 PM
so been busy this weekend! after finding that the temp sensor wasnt attatched it really sounded like it was going to go! but the starter packed up and started making bad noises!
next day was set to be a massive roadtrip to pick up a load of bits for my mates audi 90 project and a few bits for the mini. stoke, stafford, dudley, tamworth, birmingham, bedford, then back up to carlisle! 700miles and 22 hrs later we got home lol!

http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e291/coxxy1/PA250172.jpg

clubman front end, cheers rob!

http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e291/coxxy1/PA250176.jpg

so today i have mostly been finding bits and faffing on as i havent been to get a new starter motor from the scrappys!

http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e291/coxxy1/PA310211.jpg
got an engine mount so if the bloody thing still wont go with a new starter i can try tow starting it!

http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e291/coxxy1/PA300208.jpg
been playing around with the welder! should help to get me dragged out of the hedge i'm bound to plant it in when i get this engine in!

http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e291/coxxy1/PA310210.jpg
damage to starter (managed to retrieve the missing piece!)

so tomorrows job is to go and get a starter from the scrap yard. dreading having to lie on my back in a puddle to get it off though!

toying with the idea of getting the 200 legal so i can take the mini off the road to get the subframe/ suspension sorted.
also if anyone knows of any cheap runarounds in Cumbria <£300 let me know!

lol me too to be honest! but im gna be putting a clubby front on for ease and space. tbh i was just bored! the kits off a berg cup mk1 golf, really like the look of them and thought it might suit a clubman, maybe would look better if the kit was body coloured, long way off finishing touches though!

so time for an update...

finally got the garage tidy enough to get the mini in! woop!

so it went in last night and I took the seats out, de-rubbished it:rolleyes:
and then made some tubular seat mounts for the driver seat.
http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e291/coxxy1/PB230219.jpg

tied into main cage hoop and sill/tunnel
http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e291/coxxy1/PB230220.jpg

they have captive nuts for the side mounts to bolt to. might add a eyelet for a crotch strap yet.

then sat the dehumidifier in it over night to dry it all out from all this rain weve been getting in Cumbria!

http://news.sky.com/sky-news/content/StaticFile/jpg/2009/Nov/Week3/15458592.jpg

so tonight I had the help of Graeme] to get some stuf done!

we managed to get the rear suspension off along with another snapped gaz coilover! (DONT BUY THEM!!!!):!::!::!:

http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e291/coxxy1/PB230221.jpg

get the arches off and also relieve the shell of Gay-series and subframe.

http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e291/coxxy1/PB230223.jpg

http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e291/coxxy1/PB240227.jpg

so next this week is to tidy up the mess I have made in my garage then get my ass down the scrappys and pic up a metro subframe and rover 200 starter!!
then hopefully make some fibreglass door skins and roof panel, also want to do a bit more to the cage to make it tie in with the front suspension pickup points.
cheers, chris

fatlad

finally got a metro subframe at the weekend so i thought id have a go at fitting it up tonight!

started off by stripping all the steering rack off the back of it.

then tried it for size!

http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e291/coxxy1/PC020228.jpg

http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e291/coxxy1/PC020229.jpg

seemed to fit up better than i could have hoped! hardly any mods to the bulkhead yet! just has to trim the edge where the two skins overlap under the shock mount.

took off the hydragas cans and used one of the plates as a template to mark out for the side plates.

then guessed at where the holes for the shock mounts where meant to be and drilled!

http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e291/coxxy1/PC020230.jpg

1st attempt had the frame to far back so tryed again with another shot. got it spot on so tacked the two together and used one as a template.

http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e291/coxxy1/PC020232.jpg

http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e291/coxxy1/PC020231.jpg

then fitted it up!

loos to be in the right place im sure youll let me know if its not!

http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e291/coxxy1/PC020233.jpg

http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e291/coxxy1/PC020234.jpg

so tonight i got a bit more done on the car.

trimmed off the old steering rack mount and a few of the tabs off the bulkhead.
http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e291/coxxy1/PC090242.jpg

then started on making the floor mounts, decided to make them out of some tube i had kicking around. made the plate that sit against the bulkhead out of some fat 5mm plate:D should do the job!

http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e291/coxxy1/PC090241.jpg

http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e291/coxxy1/PC090247.jpg

http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e291/coxxy1/PC090248.jpg

then started on the tower mounts, i know some people dont do this but was wanting the belt and braces approach!

chop chop!

http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e291/coxxy1/PC090243.jpg

http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e291/coxxy1/PC090244.jpg

http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e291/coxxy1/PC090246.jpg

http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e291/coxxy1/PC090249.jpg

also cut the hole for the for the steering column to meet the rack.

http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e291/coxxy1/PC090250.jpg

i know most people mod the brake pedal but it looks like it might clear? hope ive got it in the right place!!!

Oz
10-12-2009, 11:22 AM
Thats one enormous hole !

fatlad
10-12-2009, 03:03 PM

fatlad
04-02-2010, 11:52 PM
so.. not much done lately! just stripped everything out of the car so nothing gets in the way!

got friendly with mr grinder:

http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e291/coxxy1/03022010189.jpg

been too busy fixing up my mates jeep cherokee that was an ebay gem that turned out to be a complete rot box! cue 3 weeks of welding for me!

then the gearbox on my wrangler got stuck in reverse, strip, inspect, fix selector fork, clean up shafts, refit. sounds easy but its about 4 foot long and weighs a ton!

this is the wrangler. 4.0 of petrol drinking beastlyness!

http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e291/coxxy1/16932_251529832551_504872551_312619.jpg

so now thats out of the way i can get back on with the mini! need to get a map sensor for the engine, anyone got a spare i could buy? or feeling charitable donate to the cause!!!:p:p:p

chris

05-02-2010, 04:52 PM
The best thing to do with that Jeep is put it back on ebay :lol:

Get back to the Mini. Jeeps are for girls!

fatlad
06-02-2010, 01:18 AM
lol that ones mine. the ebay cherokee definatley wants to get scrapped!

mines a right pokey beast 4ltr straight 6, lsd, 4x4, convertable, 0-60 8.3 lol.

you can go fast, i can go anywhere!!! lol

fatlad
06-02-2010, 01:25 AM
don't know if ive mentioned but the plan is to end up with a rear suspension setup similar to paul w and andy s but slightly different. so eventually the full rear seat will come out and be replaced by a beam and some rods!
1/4 panel exit exhaust, hoping to make some grp parts for it to. maybe some door skins and possibly 1/4 panels. then the cage will be tied into more points.

thats the plan any way........ we'll see what happens!

fatlad
22-02-2010, 12:23 AM
not much done this weekend, been fixing goddam jeeps again! got a map sensor for the engine though, cheers matbmx. so hopefully get that running this week, at last! then can get on with the bloody thing!!!

fatlad
23-02-2010, 01:21 AM
so fitted my new map sensor.... still no joy! it will fire on 1 cyinder and chuff abit but wont go!! got compression on all 4, fat blue spark, only possible culprit seamed to be fuel, its been sat for a while but it was getting fuel last time i tried, so split the inlet an and pulled the injectors, but by this time the battery was dying it seemed to be dribbling out of two injectors when the key is turned on and off, but i think the battery wont be helping so stuck it on charge for tommorow eve! will be getting a fat truck battery to jump it off aswell so it should have plenty of power!

its getting to the point with it now if it doesnt run soon itl be on the bay! quite fancying a 1.8 with a turbo and squirt with some antilag in rally car stylee! lol damn you mattg and your turbo monster! ;)

matt
24-02-2010, 06:48 PM
Sounds like you have the injector rail plug mixed up with the idle speed plug. Ive made this mistake before as they are the same and reach each other.
