hey, im from brisbane , i started doing this converison around 4 months ago or so, i aquired my subframe from Dennis Turner from NSW. current progress, the motor subframe and motor is bolted in, ive made custom brackets for the alternator, which is reversed through the drivers side guard..

its only the early days for my conversion, ive only just started making brackets up for the instrument panel, and trying to make a suitable bracket for the hydro clutch setup.. ill keep you all posted on how things are going, and heres a few pics,

hey gtimini , con i presume? i met you at last years mini muster, maybe mightn remember me, but :? yeah

these pics were taken a few weeks ago, ive welded up the original air duct hole, and cut a new one for the alt.. i have to make up a panel which covers whats left of where the mini rad was mounted..

Hi,

Good to see a new Suzuki conversion on the go. Looks like you are making good progress.

I know you aren't asking for help but it's good to share ideas.

With regards to the clutch setup, I would suggest you look at the possibility of using the original swift cable.

I have not tested the hydraulic setup but can recommend the cable. It was a simple conversion and no new parts are required if you have a donor car.

Although our car is not on the road yet the pedal feels good and not too heavy even considering we have just fitted a new clutch kit.

I have just finished fitting the instrument cluster. I cut out the section of the dash that the cluster screws to and mounted that to the car. I simply screwed the bottom of it to the bottom of the mini dash panel and made two sheet metal brackets that are welded to the fire wall to support the top.

We will try and get some more photos taken soon and post them on our gallery.

simon, yeah its getting there, im trying to figure out how to mount the gearbox, its a mk1 mtr/box, with the mount underneath, i just marked out a peice of steel, ill have a chop fest tomorow at work and see how i go.

with the dash, i made some brackets out of old kitchen draw rollers, there about 1mm thick and a very strong, i cut them all to shape , but i cant see its going to work.. i should've cut the suzi dash frame b4 i sent it to the scrap

Con, what fuel pump are you using? ive been told to use a vl pump, but im planning on turboing it before i get it on the road.. what pump did you use on the marone clubman? ive got standard S brakes, reco'd about a year ago now, i think im going to sell them and find a set of metro turbo brakes, i do have a set of 9" hondas, but i dont want to push my luck to hard when it comes to engineering..

oh, what indicator stalks are you all using? theres no way the standard swift stalk will fit over the mini steering coloum without heavy mods.. im taking my original mini stalk and the swift to aa auto electrician tomorow to get the connectors swapt over and keep the mini stalk  hope it works hehe

thanks guys :)

I'm using an inline Bosch pump. Same as the VL and will work fine with a turbo. Good for about 450Hp or something ridiculous like that.

Funny, I had no problem fitting the Swift indicator shroud to the mini steering column. It happened to be the same size and just clamped on. All my electrics are GTi except for head, tail lights and wiper motor which were easily adapted. Don't over complicate things. Keep it simple.

S brakes are okay for passing engineering but I wouldn't trust my life with them AND a turbo.

yeah my suzuki stalk just fits over the shaft off the stalk, not the surround where the mini one is clamped on, maybe mk1 is different?

and with the head lights and wiper etc.. how hard was it to connect power to the switches or the suzuki loom?

ill go down to the wreckers tomorow and have a look at the later stalks and see if there different..

Hello. Its looking good.
I am about to start my conversion again, I aquired anouther project so my gti conversion had to take a back seat.

Anyway.
Have you made you own subframe or is there a company that supplied it.
I was going to modify my own but if they are available to buy that would save me alot of work.

Hi GTI-clubby,

I am using a MK1 Suzuki as a donor car. For the gearbox mount I cut out the section of the Suzuki crossmember under the gearbox and incorporated into my subframe. It works well but I am unsure if you will be able to use it on your frame. Have a look, it may save you some fabraction work.

With the steering colomn, I cut the top few inches off the swift and welded it to the mini column. The mini now has Swift controls and steering lock and simply plugs into the Suzuki loom.

You could fit the Suzuki fuel pump to the mini tank as I have but I am unsure if it will deliver enough flow for a turbo conversion. I cut the pump out of the Suzuki and fitted to the right hand side of the mini tank. Pretty simple and only requires and extra wire and fuel line.

Good luck

bit of an update, i made a bracket up at work today, i had the motor bolted in except for the gbox mount, i lined it up, tact'd it and pulled the motor out, and welded the hell out of it, hehe i was standing on it and it didnt move so i think it sound be ok..

as for the steering coloum.. sound slike a pretty good idea, i didnt keep the coloum from my gti though  ill keep that in mind, i spose it will save a lot of stuffing around...

i found my subframe from a guy in NSW australia.. he made this one and a few others so far.. he said he will produce more if need be, but at a price..

ill take a pic of the mount when i have some time, things are hectic at the moment, its my bday today and i have a few ppl to see and things to do..

future plans are obvious.. to have a turbo swift mini would just be insane.. just money is a bit of an issue at the moment, (aprentice wages) but yeah.. it goes pretty good NA.. 8)

IS IT NOT POSSIBLE TO USE THE MINI STALK AND THE MINI DASH ETC.? WHY FIT THE SWIFT CONTROLS AND DASH ETC?

GTi_Clubby

it is possible to use the mini dash, indicators lights etc, and just use enough of the suzuki loom to run the starter, alt and injection..

i just thought it'd be easier to use the whole lot, so when i take it for an alarm, i say suzki swift, instead of oh umm its got this n this etc..

i had to get the stalk connector modified to plug into the suzi loom, and a few relays for the wipers, but that was it...

then you have self cancelling indicators, without having to cut and shit a steering coloum, which i think is illegal here..

Good to see you and your car at the Mini Muster. There must have been about 150 minis there and only 3 that didn't have an A series. Yours, mine, and that funny little shorty mini with the electric motor. Which by the way didn't count as a valver because it was a 0V mini. Or was it really a 24V (volts) mini?

Anyway, cheers mate maybe with JC next year will make it 3 GTi powered minis.

GENTLEMEN, I'VE OBVIOUSLY COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

IT IS ALSO OBVIOUS THAT THE AUSSIE AND KIWI BOYS ARE LIGHT YEARS AHEAD OF EVERYONE ELSE WHEN IT COMES TO THIS PARTICULAR CONVERSION

VERY IMPRESSED WITH WHAT I'VE SEEN IN THIS FORUM

AND IT TAKES A LOT TO IMPRESS ME, SON

EZBOARDSUX = SEEN IT A MILLION TIMES (USUALLY)

THIS CONVERSION APPEALS TO ME GENTLEMEN BECAUSE I LIKE THE IDEA THAT THE CAR RETAINS IT'S ORIGINAL BODY SHAPE AND SUSPENSION AND WHEELS AS OPPOSED TO HAVING SOME CLIP-ON MONTROSITY WITH HUGE WHEEL ARCHES AND RIMS STICKING OUT, MONSTER REAR WHEEL SPACES, AND SO ON AND SO FORTH

YOU HAVE INSPIRED ME

TODAY I WILL START BUILDING A JIG TO HOLD THE SUBFRAMES

GENTLEMEN, EZBOARDSUX SALUTES YOU

Hi Ezboardsux,

Upon what part of the planet do you live?

If your'e in New Zealand, you are welcome to use my subframe jig. There is a picture of it in my gallery.

This goes for any other Kiwis contemplating a Suzuki conversion.

THANKS FOR THE OFFER OF BORROWING YOUR JIG IF I HAVE TO, SON

LET IT BE SAID THAT AUSSIES AND KIWIS ARE SOME OF THE MOST HELPFUL PEOPLE ON THE PLANET

BUT I INTEND TO DO SEVERAL OF THESE CONVERSIONS SO I NEED TO MAKE MY OWN, WHICH I HAVE STARTED

AND BESIDES, I'M ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE PLANET TO YOU

havn't posted here in a while, after having the car on the road for about 5 weeks the car started playing up, running like a dog etc, ended up being the crank bolt came loose, allowed the balancer to rotate +- about 10degs in timing, so i pulled the motor out, decided on turbo'ing it because everything else was ok with the conversion, so its been neally 3 months now, got the engine rebuilt, fitted the roll cage, new 13x6 super's, camira calipers and rotors using S flanges, and done a few things to the interior, but most importantly, the pics :)

this was taken about a month ago

brakes.. (9.2" rotors, single pot calipers) theres no cv on there.. the rotor has fallen down about an inch there, dont worry :)

just waiting on the actual turbo now, the original one leaked oil badly, got another one last tuesday, that pissed out more than my old one, so now once i find a good turbo, its to the exhaust shop and im back on the road again.. i miss driving it i tell ya

Alex those are indeed the handles I was talking about. Look nice in my opinion and suit the more modern Clubman appearance.
