nice spending spree, i fancy one of the tdk rear beams too at somepoint!
i would check that the tower bolts still go in as i had trouble with mine when i fully welded the seams up and had to stick a tap down them to get the bolts to fit! top tip is to leave them in there and take your time, its amazing how much heat builds up!

Nearly ready to cut the original frame out.
Good stuff!
However, you MAY find that the corner of the diff housing clashes on the bottom frame rail if you centralise the engine. Sorry it's a bit hard to explain, but i'll try and get some pics.

Ok mate thanks for that i still need to drop the engine in after cutting the old frame away before i weld it all up properly ill keep a look out for it hitting.

Been busy today got the bulkhead cut out, frame mounted to the floor, engine sat in place using jacks and wood and all the little bits sorted like the bottom rail to the rear. Oh and sat the front on just wanted to see what it looked like.
Just got a few questions do you all leave the oil filter in the original place?
And anything you can see that may look out of place?, i think the engine might need to go back just a little.
Gonna lift the box up a bit think it needs it.

Personally, I think the engine needs to go over to the passenger side more. The little stubby "plug" on the back of the gearbox should be just to the right of the top arm pin when viewed from the top looking towards the car iirc. This should put the gear shifter in the middle of the car.
HTH!
Otherwise, looking good!

Right i have moved the engine across to the passengers side which ment i had to cut about 10mm of the frame out but its sits alot better and have been able to drop it down about 5 to 10mm aswell, is now sitting there ready to have the mounts made.
Will get some pics of my engine mounts up ahen there done see what you all think.

Ive been looking at my engine again in its current position and the oil filter is only about an inch prob a little less above the tie bar.
My question is what do you other guys do?
Can you get a shorter oil filter or do i need to lift the engine up even more that side.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Mine has (Owen will point out if i have it wrong :P) an caviler TD oil filter, much shallower. The other option is a remote oil filter.

So this evening i have been busy making my two front engine mounts and sizing up the rear gearbox one pics to come for that soon hopefully.
Here are my engine mounts, have'nt tidied them up yet but this is the basic shape of them.
Im gonna leave the extra looking bit of metal on this as i might make a rad mount off it.

But ill see how they go, its nice to get opinions and see what other people have done helps you along a bit.

Been looking at that im thinking of taking it of the old alternator mount, is that where you guys mount it from as i cant see a closer set of holes.
Back to the pipe bender you can get them for about £100 from machine mart or shops like that well worth the money id say wouldnt be without it.

Yea deffinatly, im giving myself till august to build it got most parts to get it running and drivable.

Just reading another topic i have a f16 box im thinking its gonna rev to high am i right.

23-02-2009, 08:05 PM
it is high mate i think its 3800rpm at 70 and that is quite loud BUT i noticed the otherday my missus corsa 1.2 16v corsa is gear higher than that lol
:o
on the f16 2nd to 3 gearchanges are imense and really are the gears you piss past everyone i have a f16 and im not planning on changeing becose i dont do that much motorway driving and dont care for top end i do find the f16 brill for b roads
its up tow you what you want out of your build . i want a quick nimble car thats geared closely and im not bothered by the noise or the high reving .but if your after a everyday comfortable car id go for the f18 :D

in f16cr! first gear is useless

Terry, if i remember rightly off of your vaux gear ratio jobby, there was only 1 or 2 MPH difference in 1st a 6000 RPM between a CR and a WR (something like a CR is 29 and a WR was 31), surely it is the final drives that makes the biggest difference?

whats hitting what???
Boulton6868
02-03-2009, 09:52 PM
The springs of the rear coilovers are hitting the turret as they move. They are offset ones aswell, cant be helped it shouldnt take to long to cut them out and make bigger.
tommi_balls
02-03-2009, 09:57 PM
if they are hitting the springs on the bottem of the turret it may be due to toe-out/the toe-in setting on the beam not being adjusted at all. Not familiar with that beam but just a thought if you have just thrown it together on a bench.
Boulton6868
02-03-2009, 10:00 PM
I have tried towing it in and out and the camber on it.
It will miss at one point but the wheel is way out of line, i think cutting it bigger will be an easier option.

Boulton6868
03-03-2009, 06:41 PM
Thanks mate im glad i built one and didnt waste all that money on a brought one it wasnt to bad to build. im hoping the mount should be fine if you mean the bottom one it has a brace on the otherside which you cant see in the pic. If you meant the top one i am to i am only using it as a steady but thinking it might become more than that and break so might have to brace it aswell.
tommi_balls
03-03-2009, 06:52 PM
i meant the lower one sorry. even if its well attached to that curved bar it still sticks out a longway. i would put money on it bending, cracking or snapping off. could u not put another plate up to the top of the bar too to make it into a triangle section as u looked at the side of it?

Also wanting a little advise on brakes as with the webbers on i cant fit the original master cylinder do you think it would be best to have a master cylinder on the pedal box.

Love that!
Great job! Keep it up! :D
EDIT: I had a 2 1/2 inch on my boggo 2ltr 8v and it went like fcuk!

3 inch is a little big , unless you are looking at 250 bhp+
also not sure how a 4-1 will work on a 2 litre ... but it does the job

Thanks for the advice guys. Im hoping the engine wont be standard for long gotta save the pennies first. I had the 1.4 8v vauxhall in my nova stock rod running 124bhp a few years back and up to 80mph it pulled with a standard cossie on the rollers. My engine builder reckons he can do this with the 2.0 so god knows what its gonna be like.

I've been told (and read) that a 4-1 isn't ideal, and although mine was far more carny than yours it still made nearly 170. i'd like to know how much was lost with that setup really
EDIT: loving the look of that frame! 8)

Having a 4-1 you will sacrifice any scavenging, together with a 3" exhaust with no back pressure you may well find that you'll lose power overall. Not the best solution but ok to get you started i guess.

Won't that bottom hose get a bit hot propped against your downpipe?

The rad isnt mounted properly yet it needs tilting back and the pipe comes away from it about an inch for the front brace bar to go between that and the manifold.

The ignition system including the coil with amplifier is from a 2L 8V cavalier running on the carb. Think is early ninties.
Yea its a nice feeling, a big step im well happy at the min cant wait to get the gear selector mounted and on ready to test drive.
It should be ready caveman with a bit of luck got two weeks away though in june then going to the british F1 so will loose a bit of time there.

That is just a 2mm strip of metal rapped round mate and hit into shape with a hammer, it took me a couple of attempts only tacking bits but basicly the 4 pipes go into that 3 inch down pipe and are welded in that and then sealed it off with the strip of metal.

Tried to take the car up the road today as i just wanna make sure it all moves and works then take it back apart for paint prep but found out the clutch is stuck so next is get that free and have another go.

Just a little update as you have probably all seen i put the project up forsale which i was for about the price i have spent on parts but thought at the time was expensive for a lump of metal and few shiny parts so gonna get it finnished.
The car is now being taken apart ready for paint prep as i couldnt get the clutch free. The plan is to get it all ready for paint before the 6th june then while im on holiday my good old dad is gonna paint it for me, I was thinking the deadline of august for mitp was way to close but everything is coming together and i am hoping everything will go back together fine.

No probs its a couple of foot longer than single garage size and a couple of foot wider, the base is wood to and i got some sheets of metal to put on top for strength when jacking up the car and it was £900 they came and fit it to.
