View Full Version : Lightweight racer mini to poo on pikeys b roads
Hello all, im new to the 16v scene. I have a fibreglass shell(stripped bare even the paint) that has a normal length wing, yet the mini subframe has a gap of about 10cm between the frame and the pear drop mounts, if i put a metro frame will i have to do any mods then? I plan to run on Su's os i dont have to bother with all the mems rover speak thingy. Just wandering if anyone has any measurments to weld up a scabby metro frame? just an idea but could you not snip of the metro mounts and weld them onto an a series frame? I would be grateful for any help.
Cheers Ivan
PS, i noticed on some posts that some have problems sourcing Ks etc, a good scrappy near me called reclamet had loads ot stuff like that when i was there some time ago, but dont take this as gospel.

you will loose power with SU's. if you must, thre are manifolds avaliable for running webbers. tho this wil lrequire bulkhead mods if your shell doesnt have a wide-webber-box- style bulkhead. why not have a look into megasquirt? if your a fan of DIY this could be the route to follow! sein as you will probably have to run mappable ignition anyways.
a k-series on a modded mini frame will fit in there id imagine (with a modded exhaust manifold) but i doubt the metro item would IIRC the front box section sticks quite far forward.
best thing i can suggest you do is have a good look through the galleries, should give you an idea how everythign "sits" in your average install.
hello there, cheers for the info. Looked at the gallery, particularly interested in evolutions subframe, just wandering if he happens to be listening, does the frame fit into a standard front? Also would it possible to get any drawings or more pictures (will pay a bit if you want) Just another question SAE ran twin 1.75 su's on their vtec didnt they? Also if i run the su's will wiring up the ignition be the same as the mini in terms of coil, starter motor (i had pre-engaged), was a metro GTi / GTa ever produced with old style distributor (as opposed to a coil pack) adn mechanical fuel pump. Looked at megasquirt looks like fun, but dont want to fuss about wit electronics, me and a mate converted a mini auto into a mg metro turbo and we had no end of problems with relays for fuel pumps wiring etc, put me off a bit.

The SAE Vtec ran SUs. Power dropped to 108bhp IIRC
Only the 8v carb K series used mech pump and "proper" distributor.
Evos frame will only fit a standard length Clubman I believe.
well that sorted that one out then, vizard. i was just thinking along the lines of insurance as im a student. i will take some measurments of the engine bay and take the front off, its only bolted on with ten bolts! can anyone help me with the dimensions of the frame as i fancy a shoehorn project, got lots of time as i havent even passed my test yet (taken apart / rebuilt 3 minis though!). I have a few questions that have probably been asked a thousand times  , if i go for standard injection i have to keep everything from sensors, alarm mems, key fobs etc?, whereas if i use the megaspunk thing i have to just have the box of tricks and sensors? with both i need lots of fuel pump gadgetry? but how will it be all wired up to my nice mini steering column ignition barrell etc? sorry for asking silly questions i just need to get it clear in my head what needs doin as i have a long christmas sat in my drive in the freezing cold and rain with freezing cold ground, cold tools, cold hands, cold arse, numb hands etc. (hopefully get a garage soon). Cheers ivan :)

my frame wil only fit under a clubby font, although with a ittle tinkering you could probably jsut squeese it under a round nose. But please remember, i havent tested/driven this frame yet, the fundimental design may be flawed in some way! BEst thing to do is to simply offer the engine up and think long and hard about how your oing to support it, and the loads placed o n every piece of the frame. alternatively modify a metro frame to suit! I would have done this if i had not alroeady invested heavily in the "mini" setup. as you get beter suspension, standard driveshafts, engine mounts etc, and a factory tested frame.
Im a student too, and in in uni 4-5 days a week and w orking 4-5 nights a week 5-2am to fund this and life in general.(paying my own fee's this year, with no student loan) ITs alot to try fit your studies around. and cartailny something to think about.

and the electrics, jsut get stuck in there. if you build your own system you wil understand it beter than butchering around someone elses (rovers)
Electrics is jsut common sence, jsu ttakes a little practice to get in to t he mindset for working with it.
cheers dude, will probably go for the mini frame, probably go for squirty thing, ive got a mate doin motorsport at uni, hopefully he can map everything and show me the ropes, he even has a wind tunnel and a carbon fibre machine mmmm. just gotta find a place to do it all as im movin house and doin a project like this is probably not best in the front drive. Oh well, sending the car of to the sprayers, im hopefully doing the 96 rover mini hot rod theme with vauxhall rio verde paint, yummy.
When i have the frame all welded up and a manky metro engine i will let you all konw,
Cheers Ivan
