View Full Version : MTB2 B18 ITR With Garrett Turbo & Intercooled Build
Joecool

Hey Guys,
Here are some pictures of my build. I decided to go with a 97 B18 ITR with a Garrett GT2871R turbo, with an intercooler. I purchased the MiniTech MTB2 subframe, with the Superbrake Kit. The front end flip is not the fiber kit, I decided to weld the front end together and install custom hinges.
Here are some pictures of my build

Very nice work.. did you have to extend the steel front to get all that under?
Joecool

nope the front end is completely stock it was not extended what so ever. :P

That turbo sits in there nice and tight, have you got much experience turboing the vtec? I presume that you have custom made the manifolds. Are you going too be mounting the intercooler where it is then? Where are all the pipework going? Interesting build.
Super looking mini and if you made that down pipe it is super neat. :) . Keep the good work up.

Wow! fantastic build, you really squeezed that garret perfectly!
what gearbox and final drive are you going to use?
Joecool
02-01-2009, 01:48 PM
hey matt, yes my mechanic that is helping me out with the build has turbo many b18 and k20 engines, and has lots of experience with vtec engines, turbos and tuning cars on the dyno.
I forgot to mention that I bought a JDM ITR, so I am using the stock LSD transmission.

Really interesting buld. Well impressed with how tight the turbo has been fitted. Will be cool when the intercooler has been piped up look forward to seeing that.

I will be keeping tabs on this build as I want to do a similar system with a D16A1. Your output side to the intercooler points down. Will it go under the motor and up or is there enough room to turn the piping to the tranny side and up and over it? JS

Joecool
07-01-2009, 07:29 PM
hey Bfeboi, I had to cut a lot almost flush to where the shock bolts to the car. Also the other problem I have with the alternator is that it comes so close to the main bolt which holds up the MTB2 frame, that I am worried that it might hit when the engine torques. What I did which I hope fixes that problem is install aftermarket engine racing mounts which should work I hope !!!

Very nice craftsmen ship! My only concern is air flow across the intercooler and heating up of the intake manifold.

Why did you opt to run the turbo that way round? Makes filter placement a bugger and may draw warm air from the rad, surely spun through 180 degrees would have been neater and saved a lot of pipework routing aswell?
I do like the conversion though, I'm dying to see how one of the turbo projects turn out. Was going to attempt it myself with an Apexi Bolt on setup, but sold it to a Friend for his EF8, It pulls hard whilst being tractable, would have been a good addition to a b16.
Nice work, Regards, Scott G :D

Hey Guys, as you can see the mini is at the body shop getting ready for paint, the car needed a lot more body work then I thought, but it’s slowly starting to get there. The guy doing the paint, and body work told me that the car should be on primer before the end of this week, and painted before the end of the month.
I have had the PRIVILEGE of installing the Mini Tec front hinge kit on my Mini, let’s just say it was a real pain the ass getting it installed, mainly because of the lack of installation instructions (for None fiberglass fronts). My advices to anyone thinking of installing this kit on a non fiberglass front, make sure you give Mini Tec a call, and have them explain to you how to install it before you start. The good news is that I was told from someone at Mini Tec, that the installation documentation for this kit will be updated soon.
BTW I almost forgot, I finally heard the engine start for the first time, before I brought it to the body shop. All I can say is IT SOUNDED AMAZING!!!! Hopefully someday John my mechanic will post the video of the cars first start.
Anyways here are some updated pictures of my build.

I was going to install a hood scope but I really didn't like the look it gave to the car. I will wait and see how hot it gets under the hood and then if I have no choice will install the hood scope, or I was thinking of installing the NOS Cobra Cooler on the intercooler.
evolotion
17-05-2009, 12:23 AM
you could duct from the grille up over the engine and down ;) the duct doesnt have to be anywhere near the same cross section as the cooler :)

17-05-2009, 02:10 AM
Where is the intake air coming from? It looks rather tight to be able to use a filter and draw air into the turbo. JS
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y40/mtlmotorsport/IMG_0440.jpg
Joecool
17-05-2009, 12:59 PM
It looks tight in this picture but there is enough room. The plan is to install the air filter right behind the front grille
As for the duct over the engine I don't think I will have enough room, with all the intercooler piping and the engine things are really tight between the engine and the hood, but it is a good idea.
I was wondering with the mini grille being pretty big compared with today’s cars, is there a lot of air coming into the engine bay?
evolotion
17-05-2009, 04:28 PM
there is good airflow, but a duct would be most beneficial. the duct can be really narrow, like 1 inch tall would be more than engough! remeber the air slows as it passes throughthe fins of the cooler :)
as for the air filter, i had similar issues, and ran a complicated inlet pipe setup to get out the tight space, but the pipes kept deformign and sucking shut :( be interested to see what you come up with! im currently jsut running fine gauseover the inlet to the turbo and have been for the last year almost

Hey guys here are some updated pictures of my mini.
Car is getting there, had lots of problems bleeding the breaks but car starts very well and runs even better.
Tonight we put the car on a mustang dyno for the first time to tune the car, and things went really well.
For the first time on the dyno we pulled 257HP 190torque AT THE WHEELS !!!!!! with only 8 pounds of boost

Just wondering how you're going to pass air through the intercooler right by the bulkhead without any venting in the bonnet or air flow to it?
Edit.
just re-read! :D
if you put a vent at the top of the bonnet facing backward and put some ducting from the grill over the gearbox to underside of the intercooler you may get some airflow.
And as Evo said, just get some fine gauze and pop it over the inlet on the turbo, i ran like this for years on 'A' series with problems, only thing is it might drop a little oil out of it now and again!

Hey mininut, we ran the car and the air intake temp is amazing, even better then some standard ITR with turbo setup. After about an hour of running the car on the dyno I put my hand on the intercooler and it was just a notch hot, but nothing to worry about. Don't forget that the mini grill is a lot bigger then today’s cars.
The only thing that we noticed is the coolant gets past 100 degree when we push it, but it might be because the overflow on the rad was not installed yet. If we let the car idle it goes back down pretty quickly.

Looks like you got it under control then, best to just keep an eye on inlet temp, but i guess if you're not running over a bar then it's not likely to get too hot either.
top job.

Hey guys, I just wanted to update everyone on my build.
I have decided to change my tranny this spring, due to problems with torque steer and making the car more drivable on the highway (lowering the RPM). I was running a JDM Type R LSD tranny which I found is not really a good idea for Mini’s.
I have decided to go with a 98 LS non Vtec tranny, and yesterday I ordered my 3.47 final drive from Houseman autosport the actual makers of the final drive that MiniTec used to sell.
As for the LSD, I have not decided what to do. I spoke to MiniTec and they told me that they have had great success with phantom grip type LSD, but when I talk to my Honda tuner that has helped me with my build, he is not too crazy about it. He seem to be pushing more for a clutch type LSD
Any recommendations

Might see you this summer then. I'm in the Montreal mini club!
I seam to have similar problems with the flip front also as i'm doing it out of steel for my cabrio project. My bodyshop guy messed it up real good! I'm supposed to see progress on Monday. If not, i'll finish up the rear and i'll get the car back to do the front my self.
Anyway, your project looks great, might meet up this summer at events or car show.
See ya!

Joecool - loving it ate - a testament to the work involved.
One suggestion/question... Using the Minitec hinges with a steel flip front, keep an eye on the drilled alloy plate fixed to the underside of the wings.
On my K headed van using the same hinges, this very soon started to split. We ended up welding two bolts to the underside of each wing and used angle iron in place of the drilled alloy bar to take the weight.
Joecool
17-03-2010, 12:02 AM
Hey Brumski, tell me about it, last year I was working on the car and by mistake as I was lowering the hood, it slipped out of my hands and it cracked the paint, getting it fixed this summer, but if it happens again might change the front end for a fiberglass front.
I find there is way to much weight and presure all pushing on the drilled alloy bar inner corner.
I Would love to see a picture of your setup.

I find there is way to much weight and presure all pushing on the drilled alloy bar inner corner.
That's why we went with bolts welded to the wings rather than fixing the bar directly to the wing itself.

Hey Guys, just drove my Mini for the first time this season, man it was an amazing feeling.
It was amazing, turned the key for the first time since I stored the car last year for winter, and it started like butter !!!! Had a couple of little problems, engine stopped a couple of times, when I would get to a stop, but we found the problem and fixed it.
I have a couple of things that I am going to have to fix ASAP, like for example I have to get rid of my magnaflow exchaust. If anyone is thinking of putting a magnaflow exchaust DON'T its WAY too loud !!! Another thing that I have to do is close off all the holes in the firewall, because the fumes from the engine bay r going to kill me soon.
Other then that I'm still waiting for my 3.47 final drive about 6 weeks left, then the Mini is back to the garage to get my new LS tranny with the FD and a new LSD. (I have still not made up my mind on which LSD would be best for my Mini I am looking into maybe getting a WaveTrac LSD, what do you guys think??

I know i advised that gause, but the gause limited me to <300hp and <1.7 bar of boost, now i run no filter atall :( and am redesigning my setup to accommodate one. at 250hp@wheels your nearing the limit of what the gause will flow mate. such nice work in the build im sure youll come up with an elegant solution :) but getting rid of that gause will net you a few more hp up top!

I know this is a really old thread but I have to thank you for it. It's almost exactly what I'm doing (or going to have done) except that I'm currently putting on the extended fiberglass flip front end. I have the Mini-Tec stretched subframe.
It showed me where I need to put my intercooler....just brilliant. I though that a scoop or even a reverse scoop might be needed but it sounds like that isn't required. I'm going to add an oil cooler and oil cooler thermostat as well, not sure where a good place for that is yet....
I'm not planning any internal engine changes. This will be pretty mild tune I think by most everyone's standards. I have a JDM B18C Type-R engine and a Houseman 3.47 F/D. Go-Autoworks has agreed to take this on. I hope my fuel mileage does fall through the floor. The silly thing gets 38 mpg now.
My list is:
Garrett GT28RS both oil and water cooled...gotta love that.
TIAL Waste gate
TIAL BOV
Intercooler (TBD)
Oil cooler w/thermostat
Hondata S300 w/custom tune
Likely a custom exhaust manifold
Fuel injectors (TBD)
Fuel pump
Boost gauge
Oil temp gauge
Moroso oil pan w/bung
Myriad of custom plumbing
