Thought i'd stick this in here as might be interesting to some of you guys.

Not a Mini i know, maybe there's somewhere better for it or we could have a non mini build diary section? Upto the mods, move it as you wish ;-)

Anyway, Myself and Steve fancied some track day fun but didn't fancy potentially trashing our minis so thought we'd build something specifically to have some fun in and not really care when i crash it (i say when i crash it cos if either of us is going to it will be me, only cos ste drives like a girl though)

We had been on the lookout for something suitable for a few weeks, we thought we could build something like a VVC or VTEC metro. Then randomly i got a message on facebook from someone i used to work with. He had a CRX with a B16A2 which he'd been driving daily up until the clutch stopped disengaging a few months previous. His parents wanted it off the drive so, knowing that myself and ste’ had put a VTEC in ste's Mini, he thought i might like to take the car off his hands. So i called him instantly and said yes yes yes and before you could say ‘Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control System’ ste’s mum had a CRX on her driveway.....

Ste’s mum: “why’s that car on my drive?”

Ste’ and I: “It was free”

Ste’s mum: “oh that’s alright then, carry on”

After taking it to our lockup we got started, so here’s some pic’s of some of the work we’ve been doing:

No we weren’t getting a bit too keen with the weight saving, the bumper was barley on so we pulled it off. The iffy Lexus lights and that Barry back box had to go.

We wanted a roll cage. You can’t buy them to fit the later CRX and as we like a challenge we thought we’d make one. We considered getting a pipe bender but we didn’t think anything cheap would have bent CDS tube very nicely. So we made some templates of the shapes we wanted and had the bends done and metal supplied by a local metalwork company.

Out of curiosity, how did you paint the cage? Careful masking out and spraying? Or paint brush? :?

Looks like you are having fun with this project. My only comment is that the car is only a pseudo CRX or the successor to the CRX. It is actually called a Del Sol over this side of the pond. There are really only two kinds of CRX's that we recognize. 1G or MKI for you blokes 84-87 and the 2G/MKII 88-91. And I know this because I also own a 1G CRX as well as the Mini. JS

I can't answer that as Steve found them, IIRC, through a guy on a honda forum. They were a pretty good price for new grp seats though we did have problems after waiting ages for them then getting sent some rubbish frame seats instead of what we ordered though it did get sorted eventually. If steve doesn't see this post and post or send you a link then i'll find out from him.

Anyway, couple more pics of the suspension, wheels we're going to fit and the MG ZS 180 discs and callipers we've fitted.
