I will try and get hold of some mgf shafts and see if they fit.

Got the engine in the frame today.

Really happy with the way the rails have turned out :artist: Ricky did a great job on them.

Started making the from and rear mounts but ran out of time.

Im hoping to get it in next weekend :uhh:

Got to ask, why go for vtec in the rover, when the original engines can produce this kind of power and has a lower setup weight?

Interested to hear what your thought process is? :D

It says on your quote at the bottom 13.2. Was that done in your mini or the metro?

thatd have been in the mini!

B16is a lovely engine, though id like to see an H22 in there more  big heavy but totally under-rated engine!

good luck with it :)

be interesting to see how you feel it compares to the vvc engine in the metro!

A few reasons for the change.

Although the vvc put out 168bhp, i had to change the head gasket a while ago and it was always in the back of my mind that it may go again.

I killed the clutch and its pretty much an engine out job to sort that so i thought now would be a good time for a change.

I have always loved vtecs and going out in my mates standard itr made me see just how good these engines are in standard form.

Is also gonna be more reliable than the vvc and once its done it will be worth more than a vvc metro.

I sold my vvc 160 for 650, the lsd box for 350 and got my driving crx for 550

I also have that rusty old frame that wastons made years ago for a metro to use as a guide for my frame and gearlinkage.

I know its more work for around the same power but i love my metros  and love vtecs so why not

I believe you have forgotten to update the build Mr Wells :kseries:

We need pictures :vtec:

TonyWells

Sorry Mr W, not much to update

Ive been going backwards!!

Had to wait ages for a new clutch to turn up. I pulled the engine out, took the gearbox off and they sent the wrong clutch :x

Ive sent it back and am hoping it will be here for this weekend.

Ive also ordered a mk1 metro rad as its got the inlet and outlet hoses on the same side and a pair of 9"fans to keep it cool.

If its here in time. I wonna try and get the engine back in. The gearlinkage bolted up. Hubs and drive shafts fitted and exhaust welded up.

Then that will just leave the water system and loom to do.

TonyWells

Right, abit of an update.

Although it looks like ive not done anything, i have. Honest

I finally got the correct clutch fitted now.

Got the engine all in and bolted up other than the front engine mount (got to get a new one cos the one i have is knackard).

Fitted the gearlinkage and extended the lower part of the gearstick to make less movment between gears.

Started putting the driveshafts in but im missing the little c clips that clip into the outer cvs.

Here is how i left things tonite.

Made some good progress tonite.

Made up a small linkpipe from the honda manifold to the metro de-cat. that way, if i ever need to put the cat back on then the metro one will fit.

I managed to get the driveshafts all sorted, what a shit job that was!!

The car is back on its wheels now. which is nice.

Ive fitted the mk1 metro rad and plumbed in all of the water system other than one heater pipe.

Not too sure if i went abit over the top with the rad fans!

At least they're not one colour and you don't have a urine sample bottle in sight  :D

TonyWells

How much bhp would the urine sample bottle add? as there is still time for me to add one!!

Gonna strip back the loom today. Should be able to loose most of it.

At least doing it this way i can check it to see if it still runs after chopping a few wires out.

TonyWells

More progress today.

Got a lot done to the loom today with lots of help from Ricky from Tube Spec.

It went from the above pic to this!

http://i494.photobucket.com/albums/rr309/typeRtony/14122008096.jpg

and this lot was removed

http://i494.photobucket.com/albums/rr309/typeRtony/14122008097.jpg

Still gotta mate it upto the metros wiring but geting there.

Getting there.

Been driving the metro now.

Everything is working, even the the vtec (thanks Duck for the vss reed switch info  )

Still got lots to do.

Gotta tidy the loom up alittle and move the gearlinkage over as its hitting the drivers seat in 5th.

Lovely looking metro top job.

Whats your opion on comparing the vtec with the vvc? Im guessing the vtec would have shorter gears so will feel more pokey?

i like it alot but you should swap it to granny spec wheel trims and a box of tissues on the parcel shelf then sit in at the local boy racer meet watching them then show them all up in a granny spec metro !

Did you end up fitting a reed switch inside the speedo head ?

Nice looking metro, the black wheels/silver body looks really nice 8)

I tested it out on an old a series metro speedo that has magnets inside the speedo head using a maplin reed switch.

Im not intending using this one as its a different style to the later r100 ones. but i can if needed.

The rover 100 has no magnets but a disc which spins the speedo. Im going to fit 4 magnets to this and use the reed switch.

http://i494.photobucket.com/albums/rr309/typeRtony/01012009124.jpg

Do you think i will need 4? as you said that the mini one only has 2 but the reed switch picks up both poles of the magnet.

Not really had much time to drive it other than a few short trips but its a really nice conversion if i do say so myself 8)

Time will tell (and a trip to pod) if its much quicker than the vvc which managed a 14.8 with silly standard suspention and crappy tyres.

Are you still happy with it? or converting back

Im never happy

Its good but could still do with more power and an lsd

It will do for now as my everyday car.

Gonna get a manifold and a chip then head off to pod to see if its quicker (it will be on ebay if not  )

Its been 100% reliable since built and should mean that i can get working on the mini very soon

Dear Mr Wells,

How did it all end up? Done any 1/4 mile runs ?

Quite interested in this, as I think your time will be slower :P

matt

Any updates? Any quarter times?

TonyWells
08-09-2009, 08:23 PM
Did manage a couple of 1/4 mile runs

only managed a 14.8 :(

which is the same as it was with the vvc lol

not too bad when you think that the vvc 160 had 20k and a super close ratio lsd gearbox and the vtec is a 100k with an open diff

ive been enjoying it too much and not been working on the mini:rolleyes:

Gonna do a little body work then sell it :-(:-(

I know what you mean about good fun. My mate has a very nice GTI with a VVC lump in it. Surprises so many people. They have to be the best cars on the road for a smile - cost. Carn't think of a car that competes with them for the money.

matbmx_2007
08-10-2009, 09:25 PM
I can vouch for that.... £600 To make my vvc daily driver. Like you say about suprising ppl Mat, done it so many times. ppl look and laugh at my metro but then i zoom off and never see there reactions which is disapointing. I need to crack on with finishing my vvc mini any how and i havent updated my build for ages so shall get on the case this weekend :D

Heres a pic- You can see why they laugh
