View Full Version : Which gearbox
I have been getting stuff together to start the conversion and as I plan to run 10,s I remember seeing somewhere that the gearbox from a Swift GLS had better ratios for 10,s than the GTI box,Is this true or will I leave well enough alone.

Yes, the taller diff ratio suits a daily driver on 10" rims better.
If you are going for high performance and/or track use, then use the Gti box as it's stronger, and you will get better acceleration from the shorter diff ratio. The diff in the Gti box is also stronger. Alternatively you can have the Gti diff modified with a GS type crown gear.

Hi,
If you are converting with mk2 gearbox, you can take out CWP from GLS.
I think most of Gtis are getting old and you want to recondition before you put in to Mini, soon. I think younest Gti will be 95-96.
I would suggest to go and visit teamswift and redlinegti. you will see some of topics regarding gearbox and even my post how to make gearbox stronger....
If you can get hold of mk1 gearbxo, it will be better.
Diff has sross pins and casing is more compact and stronger, but they are very rare now.

Well my plan is to tune the engine up to 120/130 bhp and I will be doing some track days as well but I also want a taller final drive for long distance driving as I plan to go on a couple of cross europe trips with it.Is it possible to achieve this with the GTI box.

I'll be running on 10's and with 3.9 FD and gti 'box when ready. It sure won't be optimum for longer journeys but at least a bit better than std 4.1 FD.
