Intro
Hi all :) first id get the boring bit and introduce myself  . The names Russ im 18 and an auto electrical apprentice at G.R Millwards in sheffield.
Well first started to have intrest in minis when i took a spin in my mates 1.6 vaux conversion and loved it. So really thats the long and short of it :). From there on i wanted to make a conversion and after much deliberation decided on going 1.8vvc. Owning a 1.4 R25 I know the handling and i love it so Rover + mini = :P . Anyways Onwards lol...
The Begining
Well after months of trying to find a project accidently came across a mini (mayfair 1000) looked as though been used as a doner :) but wanted a ground up so wasnt fussed. Paid £175 for it including a 3 hour delivery lol! And rolled it off the trailer and onto the drive. Was a little annoyed at first as they hadnt covered it up so there was 3 hours of rainwater inside her. Here she is in all her glory when i bought her on 09/07/08

At this point I was deciding what engine conversion i was going to do and as funds were low decided id refurb the boot so got the hammerite out (Topstuff i love it :))

Went to pick watsons kit up today
best £881.25 ive ever spent, well worth it!
Geoff is a really nice bloke and hes looking into dropping a 1.8 turbo into it for me FOC to get some plans made, so highly considering the 1.8t :).
Must Mention A Great Thanks To My Dad For Taking Me To Pick It Up :) Would have struggled with my Rover 25 lol

Well wish i could say i made a little progress today but a great thanks to my dad who decided he would have a crack as he was missing his triumph witch he sold for my 18th prezzie. (Thanks Dad! appreciate it, I Know You Loved That Car)
Well while i went for a haynes my dad cracked on and was that quick i didnt manage to get a before and after shot lol.
Firstly he completly stripped the front (inc old rack) and treated it with cure rust stuff :)
And then managed to get a little painting done :) = one chuffed son lol!

Will hopefully be finished by tomorrow :). and yes i am cracking on lol!
We both spent a few minutes figuring how the subby fits together, think we mainly got our heads round it but if u guys got any help would be great :)
Looking good are you going extended front or clubman? Are those driveshafts for the r65 or the pg1?
Thelooneytuner
20-09-2008, 11:01 PM
Tar muchly :). Not sure yet as I ain't the keenest on the clubby. I believe pg1 as geoff got the pg1 box into one of the frames and I believe he is wanting to modify my frame so it can be a base for the new kit. Can't complain as he offered FOC for the fitment :)

nice one mate! I had a good chat with geoff at MITP and he seemed a nice bloke, you should start to make good progress now you have the frame!
just make sure you budget for all the small items as they add up very quickly!

Well guys just been to watsons this morning to look at the engine and turned out he had another one there. Had a look and looks in good nick, roughly 80k on clock and as sweet as a nut. I believe its out of a tomcat and its a later model. Like a silly lemon i forgot to take a picture :(. Also forgot to measure up to see if id manag to bring it home in my R25 lol. Silly Lemon!
All looks good and wanted £375 for it so thought id go for it :), picking up in a fortnight.
Sounds good but make sure that you get the ecu, 5as, keyfob, engine fusebox, engine steady bars and the full engine wiring with out bits cut off. If these arnt there it will turn into a expensive engine :|

ive had k's in tha boot of my 200 no prob, engine only though, dont know if its got a gearbox hanging off the end. just a bit of a hernia enducer with the height of the boot lip
4 bolts and the box is off anyway, easier to handle seeing as the box weighs about as much as the engine

Thelooneytuner
27-10-2008, 10:39 AM
Got up this morning and finished sorting the wings out and trial fitted the subby :). Was a tight fit but loosend some bolts of and made it a lot easier.
Ta-Da!

http://i434.photobucket.com/albums/qq61/kminiruss/0042.jpg
Got it so far up then realised i had two bolts going through the bulkhead fouling the subby. Checked what they were and they were just stuck through. So removing them after dinner as im ringing round for metro column :).
Feeling a lot more pleased :)
Thelooneytuner
27-10-2008, 06:58 PM
Well after trial fitting the subby earlier i found i hit a bump at the front, was two bolt holes so ground em smooth
http://i434.photobucket.com/albums/qq61/kminiruss/0052.jpg
Trial fitted again and was spot on :D
So i fitted the steering rack
http://i434.photobucket.com/albums/qq61/kminiruss/0064.jpg

Thelooneytuner
27-10-2008, 07:02 PM
Trail fitted the subframe once again and worked out where the rack would connect to the column and drilled a hole. Annoyingly drilled too low, klondike here didnt lift high enough and Dad didnt notice  . My Fault  .
Anyways measured up correctly and redrilled and fits like a dream :D
http://i434.photobucket.com/albums/qq61/kminiruss/0084.jpg
Note the holes need blocking etc

27-10-2008, 07:07 PM
Well rang local scrappy while pondering and asked if theyd got a metty column in and they had :). £20 if i went down and removed it myself. Being a lazy melon I asked em to remove it for a fiver.
Anyway went down and bloke at counter picked it up and noticed the ruddy thing was bent as a boomerang, luckily they had another metro in and they whipped it out quicky and let me have everything for the £25 :). Finally patience pays off 8) . Got the column, switches and wheel  .
http://i434.photobucket.com/albums/qq61/kminiruss/0093.jpg
http://i434.photobucket.com/albums/qq61/kminiruss/0114.jpg

Thelooneytuner
30-10-2008, 08:08 PM
Well dropped the column off with a pro welder as i dont trust mine, so hopefully be done for next week.
Bushes for tower bolts came today so got home from work and fitted the subframe properly. WICKID  .
Get my engine trial fitted and hopefully that club member status will be coming my way pretty soon

Oh yes, took off my starter and alternator this morning and took them off to work to be re-conned :). Starter was ok just a little dry and brushes were worn but will fully recon it so will look like new. Sadly alternator was beyond repair, both brackets had cracked :(, however this gave me all the more reason to look at a 95 amp one, which we had on stock, looks shiney  lol, anyway need to buy other things before that :P

Well been at it again this afters, after work of course lol. managed to fit the hi-lo's and arms as well as my gaz shocks. Well after a lot of swearing and sore hands. first couldnt work out why they would not fit in together only to realise the joints of the hilos had pinappleing caps on which seeing as i have man-flu didnt even realise  . Alot of swearing later pulled them off and fitted one side :). Then had trouble screwing the adjuster in thread wasnt too great but got there in end and managed to fit the other side. Then got the shocks on.
Decided to call it quits as it was getting colder and wasn't feeling too good, flu couldnt stop me getting a few hours in

Been to work today with ruddy flu managed to finish my starter recon. Cost me 16quid in parts not bad :) cheaper than having to buy a ruddy alternator because mines duff :(. Anyway got it primed, painted and laqured looks wickid in metallic blue :). Although I was laughed at and called saddo LOL.
Came home early after being I'll all over the floor, which results in no work on mini :(.

Been quite busy today, been to work and hired an engine crane as last one bust :( . Got home and moved the engine from the drive and into the garage. EXTREMLY hard work :( Took a whole 2 hours on my own after the hire one decided to go faulty twice and struggled to get it up the slight step into the garage. managed it and it is now sat ready to be reconned :).
Went and bought some lights for garage as i was getting annoyed at trying to work by hand light. Tomorrow will be tidy garage day as i cant get to mini for all *%&£ Thats been piled up
LET THERE BE LIGHT!

Only really progress this past week has been on my rocker cover which was my project while at work :). Took ages to get the original paint off had to sand blast it, wire wheel it and used paint stripper but eventually got it off :). I then primed it and sprayed it. Looked very nice and was going to keep it all blue but due to me being a dozy lemon i scratched the top and thought what the heck ill leave the fins clear. And after a few clear coats here is the finished product
A Rover Blue-Top :D;) Thats sure to wind some XE'ers up  8)

Thanks Ian :). Took ages mind you all in all around 5 hours  4 was removing paint completly. Although it doesnt show on the pinapple camera phone picture it is actually metallic blue with extra glitter stuff, and the fins are down to bare metal, must be the light/laquer that is giving the gold effect :). I didnt realise there were already a few like this on here, i actually spied the idea off of the rover forum :P

FINALLY! Back to the mini after fitting my r25 with new engine! .
Well spent a few hours in garage today started with paint again, hand started to hurt from holding drill :( . Sat down had a beer and looked at the ruddy weather outside :x Depressing aint it!
Got up nipped to motor factors and bought me some paint for engine/gearbox. And decided id strip engine  .
First step was remove wiring loom, sadly no pics as i dumped it on bedroom floor much to the disgust of my mum, and had to quickly pile into a black bin bag  .
Next removed the throttle body. Have to say was extremley clean compared to outside of engine :). Removed Exhaust Manifold too :)

Hello everyone! Im so glad to be finally back on here :). Its been a hell of a few months recently which has resulted in no progress in the mini since christmas.
During working on the car over christmas I became ill, the cause was staying out till 1am in minus temperatures like a div! . Anyway then my car decided to pack in leaving me with no money for a replacement or anything. After much deliberation decided to buy a new car with money saved up as you know from above.
After buying the car i had then worries about my job security and having hours cut i hadnt much time for the mini and considered selling up, however i resisted hoping for the best. Gladly everything picked back up and has become back to normal.
I then had another reoccurance of the illness preventing me further. However now making a full recovery, all being well MINI WORK should be in progress At the WEEKEND WOOOO! :D .
Now i dont want sympathy or anything like that just wanted to explain my absence :)

http://i434.photobucket.com/albums/qq61/kminiruss/00210.jpg
So now most of suspension is complete :) Just need to bolt subframe on underneath.
I also fitted and painted one of the lower arms after half an hours swearing and cursing how idiotic rover were with a stupid idea of getting bolts in only then to realise i hadnt noticed the access panel to get my ratchet in
So now one side is in and painted, also painted steering rack arms :)

I wore gloves all through the painting process without a splodge on my hands. Took them off and 5 mins later while reaching something put my hand in it! Was a bit annoyed! The instructions are true "ONLY TIME WILL REMOVE". It's finally all come off this morning. I washed my hands every 15 minutes to no avail. I wore a pair of latex gloves for 3 hours yesterday whilst on a job and when I took off the glove it slightly rubbed off. Finally got it all off with wet and dry lmao
Yep ian it's por-15 and I highly reccomend it!

Leukemia, when grinding/welding it gives off dust that my (very low) immune system wouldn't be able to fight off. I can't do bodywork because sanding the filler gives off the dust. To top it off I can't work with metal because if I cut myself I can get infections and my blood might not clot properly!
Its not all bad, come summer my Dad has offered to do the welding that I need for the MOT on my VW Camper  Saves me lying underneath doing outriggers!

But dont look too bad, still got othe side to do and underneath when its dry. Also decided im going to put the engine in first and then the gearbox seeing as my engine crane is non existent anymore  .

Well ive een out in the garage this afternoon with help from the girlfriend as shes suddenly become interested in the whole project after watching the new fast and furious film with me the other day which i "dragged" her along to see, although she seemed to enjoy it more than me  .
Well with a little persuasion i got the gearbox in :) (or should i say we  ) took the bracket off and fixed it to the bearbox prior to positioning, slid her in and bobs your uncle, snug as before :). tightened her up and she now sits happily without the need for a jack :). Theres quite alot of swing in the engine though, does this go when lower mounts are fitted?

Well ive made some unexpected progress today! Only went out to the garage for some bottles of lager and ended up getting pissed off with the state of the garage  . So tidied the garage up and then sat down with driveshafts.
After asking on forum how hard it would be to swap gearbox ends i thought i may as well go for it, WHAT A MESSY JOB!!!
Took the metro gearbox side off by cutting ties then pulling apart (with some force ). Did same with vvc end driveshaft. I then realised i needed the boot so i took circlip off and pulled of the bearings. Swapped boots, bearings back on, circlip on and end shaft back on, boots cabletied and bobs your uncle.
i then fitted it in and it went in perfectly. I believe i have done it correctly?
I then fitted into the box and hub, tightend up and checked clearances :)

I then had a spare 20 mins so i pissed about and drilled bigger holes in standard mini wheels and fitted them on hubs, without brake gear mindyou.
I was in a funny mood  Just wanted to see what it looked like to have a wheel on front end again
Photo
As narrated by my dad  the wheels are here, here and here pmsl

You need to make sure you have packed the correct grease back into those inner cv joints. Carn't remember what its called but its not the usual thick grease used on other cars or the outer joints. Not even sure where it can be brought from :| .

I believe it's high temp grease, it's going to have to come off again and repack as I've noticed I didnt cable tie correctly and somes come out. I've ran out too so I'll double check and get some and find out names and prices for other peoples reference.
I hope I've done shafts correctly lol! Was a horrible job

i have always just used regualr cv joint grease in them rather then the oily type stuff. still on the same inner joints i had when i first built my mini :) there certainly more robust than the mini outers

Went out and bought copper piping for fuel feed, going to decide wether to run inside or outside the car :| .
Thought id start building up the passenger side hub, and started the same the otherside only to find my fucking modified driveshaft doesnt fucking fit fucks sake!!!
Slight miscalculations on my behalf, just going to fuck it and buy some mgf shafts and stop being a tight cunt!
anyway few pics of passenger side

Well ive had a couple of weeks distracted from mini as ive busy with work and social things  Also been skint as ive been saving for hols and for football, but we'll not talk about that shall we :| .
Managed to find an uprated alternator (same one just 95amp'er) Cleaned it up and fitted new parts. Also created an interuption of field so when i press emergency stop button it will stop the alternator charging before disconnecting the batterty :).

Well spent all this morning getting to know what wires go where so i could have a go at cranking the engine over to ensure all timing and such was ok :).
Checked all wiring and oiled the engine up. got out the battery, jump leads and power probe and gave the starter a jolt and she cranked over perfectly :). Everything looked spot on
BUT
I wasnt Happy  .
I thought i can get this thing fired up. So i shot off to get a few litres of petrol and proceeded to rig everything up to test the engine. Bearing in mind id never heard this thing running and didnt know if it was a dud!
And Here Is The RESULT  .

Been in and out of garage past few nights but havent got much done, just been pondering what order to the next steps in lmao!
Was stood there at one point going to myself "yes but if i do that first then..... but maybe...."
However, managed to solve some problems.
1) Solved the revving its tits off problem - that was down to brake servo vacuum was left open. Many thanks to Griff as i forgot about the ruddy thing!
2) Fuel tank leaking - seal wasnt quite seated right
3) Inability to crank through the loom. Managed to retrace through wiring to find i'd missed off an earth.
Hopefully will get alot more done over the weekend :)

Spent all yesterday trying to make a sodding bracket for lower engine mount to no avail! Got in a temper and thought sod it!
So went out again today and made one up :D Made one that held tight and looks perfect (Apart from the pidgeon shit welding  ) Which i am getting better at :).
Holds the engine in place even at revs :).

Hey :), yea i left a few of the hoses off but mostly it seemed to be the vacuum for the brake servo at the rear of the vvc inlet, blocked it up temp until i get a more permanent fix.

surely you can work alone? are you not supposed to call the doc to you for susspected pig flu?
I would have but it seemed to have hit me hard, all the coughing has caused my lungs to ache and ive now been put on an inhaler sort of thing until they get back to norm :(.
About the doctor thing... i rang doctors, they said stay away and ring nhs direct, so i rang nhs direct and they said they suspect i have got it. So i went to doctors saw a doctor and got a rollockin from the doctor for coming in! although nhs direct told me to go in! so we sorted that problem out and had to make a complaint about nhs direct. Saw doctor had a swab test and came back positive.
SO MUCH FOR TRUSTING NHS!
From what I experienced it was very much just like a normal flu however my lungs are worse for wear and i was struggling to breath.
All i have now is a irritating cough and sore lungs so off to work tomorrow and should be able to get back to it friday :)

Once again 0 progress at the moment :(. mainly due to lack of funds. Had overtime cut down so not as much dosh to blow and insurance per month is crippling me mostly :(. However managed to save some money up and hopefully going to get a radiator next week and get cooling sorted.
Also decided going cable clutch as its going to be more cost effective .
All being well i will have a good tackle of it saturday after work
Another pretty good thing only working every other saturday so more time wwwoooooo!
