OK Guys,

We have taken the heads off two engines no problem at all ..

The third one is giving us problems..

We have tried a cut off allen key on the end of both an Air impact driver and the old fashioned impact driver you hit with a hammer..

The allen key gives way before the damn bolt will come undone..

anyone know of a high quality 8mm hex allen key type socket ?

Chris

Hi Chris,

You will need to drill it out.
Next thing is, you have to buy full set of bolts due to OEM items are use once only. They stretch once you used.

I bought 2 sets of HD Bolts from suprf1y from Canada for about £40 for 2. If you are stuck, then I can sell you one set.

Make sure you don't lose washer, they are special smaller OD ones.

Good luck

Or you could cut/grind the head of the bolt off, remove the head over the bolt then either:
1: Use a pair of stilsons on the base of the bolt
2: Weld a nut over the stud at the base and use a socket/spanner.

I just went to the local tool store and bought a Draper Expert 7 piece hexagon bit set.. (stock no 12837)

I wasn't able to get a Snap-On but I'll try this one and see how it goes..

It's 1/2" drive and the bits are 75mm long, just long enough for the 1/2" drive socket part to clear the casting.

The bits are supposed to be Chrome Molybedenum Steel , better than the carbon steel bits we were using..... we shall see

(ps if I have to cut it off, at least I have a Britool stud removal socket !)

I was under the impression that you could reuse stretch bolts until they have lost 10% of their thickness or something like that

Could be wrong though! Beware!

Hi Chris,

All you need to do is drill it out with 8mm.
Once you cut through bolt head, you will hear it.
Also, as soon as tension is gone from bolt, you can unscrew it by your finger. I know this because I have dealt with same thing more than 2 engines worth.

These bolts are use once and torque is set to "snug torque".
This is for yield strength of bolt andfasten force is created by torque it up to this zone with little stretch.

So, you better not use it again, if you are thinking of turbo charging/modding it later.

You can buy ARP from US or by Suprf1y one for better pricing than OEM.

Cheers
Atchi

Well,

the draper bits worked a treat !

over 100 foot pounds to undo with a long torque wrench (I wanted to see just how tight they were!) and the bit didn't slip... I can heartily recommend them..

I got the remaining 6 bolts out in less than 15 minutes.

The engine is another matter.. water has got in (before we got it) but it may be salvageable..
