I know people have written bits and bobs in the members forum, but just wondering what exactly people do - especially those "in IT" - always handy to know if there's anyone here that might be able to help with the odd IT problem !
I've just moved jobs from looking after all manner of servers at a small site, to working from our head office just looking after MS Exchange Servers (15 Exch2K servers, and about 30 Exch5.5 servers), and anything connected to 'em (ie Blackberrys - pain of my life at the mo !)
Used to look after all manner of scripting issues, policies, most MS apps and platforms etc - been doing this line of work for 11 years now.

I'm in IT!
I work by myself, and manage/support anything related to computers for 9 small to medium sized companies.

Big experience in Exchange 5.5/2000/2003 if you need anything, although it's been a while since I used 5.5. Done pretty much bugger all with Blackberry devices, well not enough to claim I know anything about them!

I'm a mechanic for a large fleet maintenance company. Get to work on most makes of cars, although mostly the common makes, but occasionally get some rarer cars (what kind of fleet company let's you have a Nissan 200SX as a company car?). Also get to work on lorries, breakdown trucks, trailers, and some other nice specialist vehicles with electric and hydraulic systems that you hope don't go wrong (or when they do, spend 2 days buried in a workshop manual trying to figure out why it's not doing what it should do).
I get to play with ford + vauxhall diagnostic systems, as well as regular training courses (vauxhall college wins for hospitality :D - only courses I've been on where I've put on weight)
Also do lots of inhouse warranty work on our own vehicles, which provides a good variety off work.

And when I'm not at work, I get to fix tractors, lawn mowers and anything else anybody wants fixed.
I occasionally get to play around with my metal working tools, and maybe soon I'll get round to finding a mini.....

Oooh so many replies !!
Matt - who do you actually work for then ? I work for the ever-doomed MyTravel (can't believe I've survived 6 redundancy-fests so far !!)

Chad - you just stitched yourself for all manner of posts asking for help with obscure public folder problems and "Oh sh** - my Exch2000 server wont start any of the services" type posts ! :) !!!!

Ooops / Wally / Mini-GSI - sounds like you're all in the ideal kind of jobs for this sort of project ! I certainly wish at times I worked a bit more "in the trade" - although mostly I wish I worked in a scrap-yard so I could get everything pretty much free !!! :)

j-p - you've got all this fun to look forward to ! Make the most of being at school instead of having to work !!! :)

Will do Matt !! Hopefully MyTravel are starting to get back on track - should be posting some ok results in a month or so, but then there's the dreaded "debt for equity swap" where shares take a major dive - atleast the company will be out of debt though ! I wonder if the bank will sell us soon after though :? !!
Chad - yup - I certainly do remember thinking "I cant wait to get out of school" - only to find its far less appealing now !! Never worried about money, or pretty much anything :) , when i was at school ! Ah well ! :)

I have some very good customers but it took me 5 years to build them up through my last company, and then I just picked the best of the bunch. I've been going for just under a year in my current setup, and work on average 2 or 3 days a week (not including accounts stuff). However, holidays are a big problem (I have to pay a grand or so for somebody to cover my clients for a week, and even then I still worry whether the work/customer service is up to scratch), and there's always the worry that too much will go wrong at the same time so that I can't meet the response times.

I was absolutely crapping myself when I started like this, but it turned out to be excellent. I now work a third of the amount of time I used to, and earn about three times as much.

Sounds like a damn good way to work Chad - 2 or 3 days a week !?!!! I think I need to quit - I've had to be part of a 24 hour call rota aswell for the past 5 years - only get called abuot once a week these days, but it used to be nearly every night :(
Had to talk a director through using dos to ping servers last night, whilst trying to do some welding !!!! :) Not an easy task - I dunno where they get these management types from that are utterly useless !!!
