Started making a little bit of headway for the rear hubs and swingarms

I am using metro vented calipers, 2 pots for the handbrake, 2 for normal brake.
A swingarm will be fabricated, having 2 plates that the balljoints will screw down onto, then there will be a plate for the steering arm to bolt to with side to side adjustment for toe.
I'm not mad on rose joints so it will pivot on sealed bearings, and will adjust for camber in the normal mini way!

The GTV  will be here on sat 2nd
Got to take the subframe back out and put it back in the front.
Need lots of steel too :D

Mallott,

If you are putting your car on the road you can not use two of the metro pots for breaking and two for a hydraulic handbrake. I contacted the SVA a few weeks back to ask and i was told it MUST be mechanical which means cable.

I thought the same about hydraulic handbrakes, and so did my girlfriends dad (hes a mechanic and MOT tester)! But I recently asked a friend of a friend and he said he would pass them if they passed the efficiency test. He didnt care if they could relax or leak, as long as they didnt do it during the MOT.

And TerryGs passed, check out the 8v Vaux in the rear http://www.16vminiclub.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=10555

Great choice of engine, super revvy, just dont trust Italian electronics :?

The Mighty Mallott
23-07-2008, 09:12 PM
Nmm just read up on this, i thought if it was a completely independent system i am ok, but it seems it must be mechanical, all depends on the tester really, will look at the alfa rear calipers when i get them off.

pops
23-07-2008, 09:47 PM
The law is the handbrake must be independent of the foot brake unless your car was built before 1962/63.

So using the metro caliper would/should fail sva/mot depending on mot tester.

BATESPEED
24-07-2008, 11:54 AM
i would have thought the hand brake was the least of your worries

The Mighty Mallott

one side pivots have been made

http://www.16vminiclub.com/gallery/albums/userpics/CIMG4537.JPG
http://www.16vminiclub.com/gallery/albums/userpics/CIMG4538.JPG

I should point out that i am not putting the engine onto a mini rear subframe, a z cars style cage will be made, to house the engine/box.
This subby is purely as a jig for making the swingarms.

On the handbrake side of things, the top and bottom pistons are on completely seperate circuits, hence independent, so according to pops' definition this would be ok. :? :? :?

BigAndy
24-07-2008, 05:01 PM
What you need is a mini that already has a roll cage and subframe thats suitable in the rear of a mini.... hang on a minute

pops
24-07-2008, 05:24 PM
Handbrake needs to work mechanically,

If one of the braking pistons leak you have no handbrake

welshy
25-07-2008, 11:28 AM
Mallot,

It is highly likely the hydraulic hand brake will get through an MOT. If it doesn't then take it to the next garage an so on.

I have seen people weld plates to the outboard brake pad then attach a handbrake cable. Although you won't be able to pull hand brake skids very well.

Alternatively you could still plumb in your hydraulic hand brake but when it comes to MOT you could disconnect the hydrulic handbrake and attach the cable... only down side is bleeding the handbrake after every mot.

Aaron has been stripping the interior out, i have been attacking the engine bay, was pleasantly surprised to find a reasonable looking manifold and an Ally block! This will obviously help to keep the weight down :D

And finally lovely momo seats
http://www.16vminiclub.com/gallery/albums/userpics/CIMG4614.JPG

Clutch is hydraulic and gearbox is cable shift so should make those 2 things a bit easier.

Garage is getting rather full of junk though :?

Loom is now out, what a job. i thought the old honda loom was big
Although the engine bay mechanical side of things was well laid out, the interior and loom more than made up for it, anyone listening outside my garage would hear f,ing italian w,kers, tossers pasta munching twats, all night long!!! just got a few more bits to remove, then i can get rid of the shell.
Can't swing a cat in there at the moment  then progress can begin in earnest

The Alfa is now out of the garage thank god, just loads of crap laying around now! had a play with the alfa rear calipers

The alfa caliper sits in the rightish place for a normal mini disc, when its bolted on the other side vs the mini caliper. The bolt holes line up pretty well, just drilled out the holes to 11mm, no other mods required, just ordered up new bearings and discs, so will blast them and try them out!

If I could get myself one I could sit in doors with my cider, lock the Aaron in the garage and occasionally push metal and food under the garage door, 6 months later there would be a new mini ready for me

Get Aaron some white coveralls and he could be the stig of the garage world !!!

Progress (albeit slow) is still being made, Aaron has been found and has returned to his rightful home, he has been messing with engine mounts for the last 3 weeks or so! i have been bracing the front subframe and doing a bit of body work too, new scuttle panel and repairs to inner wings at top

Nah mate, Boots is now the proud owner of those panels, i was trying the panels for fit. With is being so cold in the garage (Aaron repeatedly says its colder in the garage than out!) motivation is somewhat lacking, then when we do go down it's only for a short period!

Anyway on wednesday we got the rear mount all tacked up and the cage supporting the weight of the engine.

It also means my build is now in the wrong section! oh well never mind!

There were 100 reasons for sacking the alfa, main ones being lack of support on alfa forums wiring wise, weight, size and now that we have lost our local drag strip, we wouldn't really have anywhere to really use it! I didn't want to create a monster, i would rather have a more balanced machine, hence the change to the VVc :kseries:

Things have been ticking along slowly,

the car is now back on its own 4 wheels,

i cut down the steering rack and made mounting plates, at last the rear wheels stay where i point them now!!

i put a 2" gash in the top of my head after some door glass fell off the roof,

made the rear shock top mounts and some other little bits abobs here and there

Anyway pics;

The decoy pea shooter exhaust pipe:p

I don't know wether i like having the rear valance on, the car will sit a couple of inches lower, also i'm not sure what to do for a bumper, don't want a heavy metal thing, but i'm going to need something to cover the seam,, hmmm.....

just seen that the swear filter wont let you write b umper!!!!

Looking good Matt!!... some nice fabrication work on the rear suspension set-up.

Have you thought about getting rid of the valance and replacing with a subtle diffuser??

Nice gash! :-)

Chris, i thought about a rear diffuser type thing, but a bit too much faffing around i think!

Got the engine in, NOT EASY! need to cut some more rear parcel shelf and arch away but the jigsaw's blown up! Inner cv clearance is also a bit of an issue on the ns:-?

Got 2 genuine inner cvs and shafts, brand new for less than the scrappy wanted for 1 second hand shaft! robbing gits!

As you can see there's not much space down the front of the block for the manifold, will have to come up with something elaborate for that!

I have thought of taking it over the top! Anyway grounded off the flange on the bottom

http://lh4.ggpht.com/_XzCo1or8XVE/SmnxhzhLtbI/AAAAAAAAEEQ/T17onoMK1FE/s512/CIMG7013.JPG

started playing around with back boxes, i'm going to use the standard integra type r exhaust that i had laying around from the blue meanie project, should flow ok and be quiet enough.

Got myself an mgf gearshifter and cables finally, had to refurb it abit to remove all the sloppiness and chop off any unnecessary bits.

The manifold i have decided to make from scratch taking it round over the gearbox, mainly after reading the bit on exhausts on dva power!

Managed an hour or two this afternoon, more playing with the gearstick, got it in place and also got the cable mounts welded in place

http://lh5.ggpht.com/_XzCo1or8XVE/SosFeZ_YVuI/AAAAAAAAEL8/31sAw44i4Cw/CIMG7131.JPG

now i can attach the cables to the stick and start knocking up the gearbox end of things, should be able to make it with a nice short throw!

Picking up my seats this weekend, got some bargain bini s seats for this car as well!

Got some colour on it, put the last coat on at about 8 on wednesday night, then moved out of my house on thursday! Needless to say the garage was still stinking!

It's got a few runs in it and needs a bit of buffing in places, but its not too bad for my second spray job, progress may come to a halt for a few months as we move into our new house sometime next week.

At least i can start to bolt stuff on now and leave them on!
