I supose it is time to start my build dairy, don't we all say this?haha, but as i am finally getting more and more done to it I decided I should.
I am putting a b16a1 into my mk4 clubman estate, i am using a M.A.D (Mendoza Automotive Developments) subframe.this subframe requires no fiewall modifications which is a big issue here in New Zealand.
will put up pics as build progresses, will have 3 stages in the state of tune of the engine.
1st stage will be with a chipped PR3 ECU, better inlet manifold, high flow extractors.
am going to have 8.75" integra vented disk brakes on the front, and hopefully the unvented pair on the rear if i can adapt them on any help out there?
anyway enough for now, will post pics shortly

Another NZer with the affliction...welcome...
Just curious-why is it you think firewall mods are a big issue here in NZ?
I have modded my firewall slightly and the advice/guidance from the certifier was that any steel removed has to be replaced with steel of an equal or greater thickness and then it is his confidence in you as to how diligent you are with a welder, tools, etc. Shouldn't have any prob's.
Anyway, be good to see some pics......

Hello from me too!
And Ditto what Glenn said, same certifier told me the same thing - as long as what you remove in the firewall is replaced with equal or greater strength, then its allll gooood.
I havent yet modified mine - not sure if I will need to or not. I have two intake manifolds which I am going to play with - have started to cut one up. If that fails, then I will modify the firewall.
Good luck with the build, and I would also love to see some pics.
Oh and what do you think of the Mendoza frame? Another guy who lives around the corner from me has used one too. He has a b16 turbo - I cant recall if its a b16a or type r though. Something around 250 horses at the wheels I think.
I was going to use their frame also, but decided to build my own with a work mate.
Cheers

good to see a few kiwis here. also apon talking to a certifier he said it was all good to chop the firewall as long it was welded to high standard, and the metal was the same or greater thickness, just chopped this gapping hole in my fire wall last weekend, im sure it shoudnt be an issue

hey
when i talked to the cert guy up here in wellington he got a bit uptight about it and was saying that he wouldnt cert it unless it was also high quality standard and all this stuff and i cant weld for sh*t and im doing 95% of the work myself if i can to save on the money.
i think the mendoza frame is quite good, but have nothing to compare it to as i haven't seen another V-TEC frame in person.
guy down south with V-TEC turbo mini is John Hope, running b16a with 12psi boost.using a mendoza frame.251hp at the wheels i think he told me.scary ride in any case.
will post pics in next few days when i get the chance to take some as engine still not in as don't have mounting bolts and strong honda didn't know what i was talking about.you think they would.......
but got 2 gearboxes the other day, one is a J1 the other is a YS1.
cheers everyone

Would be interested to see some pics of just the frame, if possible. It is no doubt changed since I last saw it, as John was sending his back to Mendonza every now and then as they found an improvement or he had a problem etc. The last time I saw it was in his garage and he was just fitting the turbo, so its been a while since I have been around and seen him. I keep in touch with him via text every now and then though.
Does the frame now have support for the front of the body? Does it have much triangulation in the design?
And yeah 251hp is a bit insane eh ;) He says its hard to keep it in a straight line, and has major torque steer issues. Whether that is actual torque steer, or the large debates that have gone on in other posts - he said its moves about alot anyway :)
To you have a planned ETA for completion?
Cheers

hey
Mendoza was still doing little things to the frame still to make sure it was all ok when i got mine.but it all seems to be good now.but still no front support.i will find where i have stored the pic of the subframe tonight as waiting for boss to pick me at the moment (btw do you write HTML script to post pics here?)
i went out in Mendozas other week and that had a lot of torque steer so i think Johns will have quite a bit more considering the turbo.
ETA haha well i am still young and doing an apprenticeship so i would have liked this years mininats but i think it will have to wait until either Taupo next year or mininats next year for the 50th.
cheers

I have pics from their website when that was working, but it doesnt seem to exist anymore.
Interesting how their standard mini has torque steer too... wonder if its more the design of the frame than anything else.
From what I remember, there was no triangulation - as what Glenn pointed out in one of the posts on my build diary, as I was going to get one too. The power of the engine etc looks like it could twist the frame, ditto with braking, which may lead to the no-so-desirable handling.
But without seeing it...
If you can post some pics that would be good, im sure alot of people would like to see it now.
and yes, images are posted using the Img tool at the top, under the subject field when you are posting a message. hover over it with your mouse and it will tell you want you need to include.

does anyone know where i could find some mounting bolts for the b16a?

Frame is a little different than when I last saw it I think.
Mounting bolts - anything you need, there is a NZ honda forum, and a buy and sell section - people are very helpful on there. www.nzhondas.com
Ill post the pics of the mendoza frame I have, if I can find them.

Oh ok.
I wonder what they have done in order to get Johns back and forth to them a couple of times.... hmm
Still a little concerned about the bracing to stop flex when accelerating and braking eh.... I suspect this plays a part in the handling.
Frames like the minitec ones dont seem to experience this handling problem, so it must be down to the frame design.
You able to weld?
Will be good to see how this comes out :)
I should be in wellington around xmas with my mini... provided I finish it in time...

hey yea i wonder too.i know Mendoza was doing the last few tweaks just before i brought mine from him.
from going in Mndozas mini there seems to be no handling problems or anything but time will tell i guess.
unfortunately i dont know how to weld and if i tried i would make the estate more of a mess than it is already.
awesome how long will you be in wellington for?
