Yes mate, All the test fitting etc is now complete. Only thing left to do is send it to paint and re-build it!!... the best bit!!!... got most of the parts too just itching to start hanging them on :-) :-)
Oh yes - and fathom out the wiring.... not a clue where to start but should be interesting....
Yeah, I sent the whole cage (front and rear)for powder coating... think it was only £50!!... and it looks a treat....

Bit of an update.
Wasnt totally happy the front was secure enough so me and the old man came up with this idea of using some Alluminium plate to add some rigidity

After many months gaining info from you guys I finally took the plunge and bought a radiator... I just hope it will be sufficient.

Both the inlet and outlet are 28mm though and Ive heard that the preferred diameter is 32mm

Got a few more little jobs out of the way this weekend, relocated the lamba sensor in the exhaust, though the manifold is hitting the frame at the rear end where the engine mount is so got to try and bent it slightly..
Inlet manifold now fits with no problems but its going to be tight getting the air filter on!..
Im starting to realise that nothing is straight forward with these builds, thats where the time is taken up!!!...
Can anyone advise of a good place to buy some stainless exhaust bends and pipe? also the bracket that fixes to the honda manifold??...
Cheers

21-07-2008, 08:43 AM
buy a tight 90deg 70mm ID silicon hose for the inlet.
try jetex for some stainless parts , not the best , but cheap. they do a thing called a "compensator" (flexi joint) heard this bolts onto the honda joint

21-07-2008, 04:56 PM
Hi Chris, we used 2.5", (widely regarded as the optimum size for itr) jetex(simons) boxes and pipes. From Demon thieves. Apart from the back box which was a freebie from my old work.

Pretty good quality, we are happy

yeah Chris, the centre box is the tubex model i think, 100mm round and about 600 long, fits in the tunnel nicely, back box is about 170 round by about 350 long, sound is not too bad gets a bit droney on the motorway but bearable!

Well, this weekend I got my driveshafts put together.
http://www.16vminiclub.com/gallery/albums/userpics/shafts.jpg
I couldnt for the life of me manage to get the metal boot clips to go back on so I tried cutting a few corners by using tie wraps... this later became a problem as when I tried them in the hubs the noble on the tie wrap hit the hub!!.. so Im going to have to find an alternative solution. Is there a special tool that compresses these clips and alows them to lock??
That wasnt the only problem I ran into, when I got the honda end on the splines, it didnt seem to want to go all the way on - was about an inch from where it looked like it needed to be. I was gonna give it a clout with the hammer but didnt want to damage to boot!!..
Any one got any tips of how to get them on??..
Also they seemed very close the the frame (allspeed) what sort of clearance should there be?..
Cheers

give it a gental hit with wood/ hammer (or rubber mallet) to get them on.

This arrived today - front spoiler!

Its meant for a mk1 escort so Ill have to make a few modifications to get it to fit but hopefully it will hide the frame thats visible at the front!..

Fibrepaste would be the best way to go if ur bonding or filling up fibreglass, even works a treat on metal as bodyfiller and sands down rather easy

Made some spacers this weekend for for the passengers side engine mount, these are keep the engine low enough when tightened to the frame to prevent the driveshaft hitting..

I got the dash from e-bay. Ill try find details of seller. Ive had to cut it down quite a lot to set it back far enough to clear the steering wheel. Just need to devise a way of fixing it. Think Im just gonna use hex headed stainless fixings.
I was originally looking for a mk1 golf or polo spoiler but the only ones I found were plastic, I wanted it to be fibreglass so I could blend it with the fibreglass front...
Cheers Matt, I want it to look agressive... wont be far off when its painted black with a black grille. Im just intending leaving the outer part of the grille silver, should look ok....

You can get special stainless cable ties and a tool to tighten them up
But there is no need
Why not go for the old system of using stainless welding wire with a few twists in it, that the smallest you can go with regards to clearance
Mintegra
13-12-2008, 09:03 PM
All sorted now.....
Not been in the garage for a month or two now, thankfully the old man has been tinkering away. He's got the clutch bled, although pretty stiff it appears to be functional. Compared to the clio its seems ok, just a bit tighter, not a bad thing in my experience as long as Im not sat in traffic...
Just looking at the heating and how I will incorprate it into my dash..mmmm not sure...
No pics unfortunatley - will hopefully have the heating finished along with the exhaust, fuel lines + pump & tank finished by 2009.
Still got to strip the loom of its redundant bit..... dont know where to start!!...

Its been ages since I did anything on the mini so I decided to make an extra effort this weekend and sent myself in to the garage... thanks god for paraffin heaters!!
Spend most of Saturday devising a way of mounting the radiator, here is what me and the old man came up with.

http://www.16vminiclub.com/gallery/albums/userpics/Rad_bracket2.jpg

Chris, the top of our radiator is not actually secured, you will find that when the top hose is on, it is very stiff anyway. I just have the original bottom mounts sat in 2 pieces of tube welded on to the subframe front. Clearance is pretty tight between the engine and rad, so i thought if the engine moves forward then it will move the rad forward too. :D
Good to see you still plugging away!

Thankfully the old man has been pluggin more than me and has got the mini side of the wiring complete!... lights/horn/ wipers etc are all complete. just need to finish of the honda side and we should be good to go soon!!....
Cars looking great, glad to see your still progressing. What's the radiator off? any chance of the measurements?
Keep up the good work, wish my dad would come and work on my min when i carn't be bothered/have to redecorate/go to work.

Here is the info on the radiator - this is where I got mine..
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/HONDA-CIVIC-HONDA-HRV-CAR-RADIATOR-NEW_W0QQitemZ280311104645QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Car sParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item280311104645&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1683%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C 240%3A1318
Note that the hose fittings are only 28mm - with the honda B series having 32mm fitments I will have to use a couple of hose reducers..

thanks for the rad info, build looking great you must close to firing her up
Is your braking system single line? i've been looking at fitting a servo and looking at remote servos but read they were for single line systems. If i can quash a later servo and pedal box in i might try that.
Mintegra
24-02-2009, 09:12 PM
No worries mate.... hopefully it will be sufficient, Im going to rig up a manual switch for the fan just incase!
I originally wanted to go with the dual line system with Wilwoods or KAD's with a pedal box but thought I would try the cheaper option, well that and lack of funds. So a measley single line system, remote servo and some metro 4 pots were chosed - should atleast give me some idea of where/what will need updating at a later date.
Just got to get the fuel tank modded, the lines and pump fitted then the rest of the loom sorted out and we should be good to go!!!... cant fooking wait to hear it!!... :-)

Your exhaust mount in the centre pic will not last long. It would be far better mounted on top of the bracket fixed to the car/frame, and the exhaust bracket sitting on top of that. Still allows movement but compresses the rubber rather than pulling it off the bonded on bolts.
Or better still fit another rubber hook one like the rear.

Hi chaps,
Well after many many many hours of rubbing, painting and so on... we are finally making some good progress with the body work.
I took a week off work to concentrate on getting it painted..
First off was to build a dust free booth!!.... IMPOSSIBLE!! but it did the job nicely!!..
http://www.16vminiclub.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=6&pictureid=22
Then we got the mini masked up and ready for some colour..
http://www.16vminiclub.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=6&pictureid=23
5 coats of gloss black later and more rubbing down it was starting to look something like!
http://www.16vminiclub.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=6&pictureid=24
We tested some of the rubbing compounds out on the boot to see what results we could get..
1200 grit paper to 1500 grit - to course compound, medium course then fine, finally to polish.. needless to say my arms are killing but the result is magnificent!!
http://www.16vminiclub.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=6&pictureid=25
So now for the rest of the body!
http://www.16vminiclub.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=6&pictureid=26

As all the glass was out I thought it would be rude not to tint it...
What a job cleaning all the dirt and sticker glue off them.
http://www.16vminiclub.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=6&pictureid=77
http://www.16vminiclub.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=6&pictureid=78
It is imperrative to get the glass as clean as you can before adding the tints, nothing worse than tints with spiders legs and air bubbles all over them.
Unfortunatly there was a few scratches in the glass, but not too bad considering the state of the car when I got it..
Rear screen cleaned;

With the mini windows being like greenhouse windows, they needed something. I hate those really dark ones so just went with 35% light smoke which are more than enough..

By the looks of the real car, then you got very close to the render. Did you originally intend to de-seam the rear of the car, as I think that is the biggest difference between the real thing and the render. Looks fantastic though, all credit to you.

Cheers guys...
Not really much progress - went to put the front screen in but was dissapointed to discover it had began misting up on the laminate which was impossible to remove...
So me and the old man started having a look at getting the dreaded front arches test fitted before they are prepped for painting.
http://www.16vminiclub.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=6&pictureid=100
Started having a look at the harness fittings too - what have people done for them??..
Was thinking of welding some brace bars in the boot onto the underside of the parcel shelf.. would this be suitable?
ps - never intended to de-seam - just realised I'd forgotton to turn them on for the render :-) another thing that wont be the same is the 3 vents at the front and the number plate as Ive had to chop 1 big vent to give the frame brace bar clearance.

Bad day in the office today, everything that could have gone wrong did!!..
Cracked the new windscreen putting it in so thats gone in the skip - new screen required
Finishing off the buffing on the front end and it appears we had a bad batch of paint that wasnt the same colour as the rest of the paint this was one of the intermediate coats, so now the car is multicoloured - needs respraying
Cut the front/side gutter strips too short - :-(
Scratched one of the front tints winding the windows up and down - gonna ditch them now
No steps forward and 4 steps back... :-(
The old man has done a superb job on the front arches though, but now the rear end looks too measly so we may have to extend those too....
Pics to follow on Monday!

my harness fittings are attached to the strut brace in the boot , i would use a bar bolted or welded to the rollcage at the rear of the cage across the back where it bolts to the wheel arches , i personally wouldnt trust the parcel shelf

The Honda frame must be the better fitting one then.
I like the Honda engine would have used one if I hadn't done mine u could use the s2000 set up with a six speed box rwd.

Possibly!...
I would have done, along with the Minitec frame however when we set out with this build a good few years ago they werent as well established and didnt do a kit for the K20a then.. I have seen a few of them on this forum and they look great!!... and the kit comprises of everything you need!!...
On a plus note the K20a isnt much more powerful than the B18C6... think they are both 197ish!...
S2000 setup would have been great in yours!!.. but the Cossie will still be as much fun, especially when you have it boosted over 300hp!!..

Have you decided what wheel your putting on yours??... I think a nice set of white compomotive MO's would look the business- when I get board of mine I think Im gonna get some!! :-)

Lol that sounds exactly like me that why we've taken so long need to do less thinking about what to do next and just do it.
I think black wheels would look better on a black car White would be to much of a contrast. I like the ones you've got.
I'm using mini lites split rims u can see them in my diary had to get them made at image wheels cause the back calipers wouldn't fit under a normal cast wheel I'm a bit ltd on wheels
hope to be finished summer time better get my arse in gear hey that's if the wallet holds out!

Been buying a few bits and bobs for the interior and trying to decide what to do in terms of sound system - although Im not sure I will be able to hear it over the screaming V-tec.. never the less I thought Id get onto designing something.

One problem we came accross with the Allspeed frame and GAZ coilovers was that once the engine and everything else was in the coilover didnt look very comfortable in the shock mount - notice from this earlier picture how it leans backwards slightly.
http://www.16vminiclub.com/gallery/albums/userpics/Photo0098.jpg
So... we are currently devising a way to straighten it up, but whilst doing so we are going to beef the whole mount up using larger bolts and some strengthening plates.

Hello all,
Not posted any updates for a while but plenty has been done to the mini, managed to sort out the mis-aligning front coilovers. We also welded in some thick steel plates at the back of the mounts to add extra strength and used some large nuts and bolts in the top two mounting points. Now I have a lot more confidence the whole mount wont sheer if I hit a bad bump.
Mounted the water bottle and made mounting brackets for the ECU and internal relays / fuse boxes under the dashrail.

We are about 90% way through the wiring but we have hit a brick wall with the immobiliser as the diagram we have for it doesnt seem to show this device.
http://i654.photobucket.com/albums/uu263/Mintegra_album/pic001.jpg
So we are struggling to find out exactly where the wires in the left hand plug go. (OBD2a ECU) Any help would be massively appreciated.
Just need to mount the clocks in the dash and get them wired up, put 'another' front screen in, finish bit and bobs off with the interior and we should be good to go!...
Thanks

2 things mate I notice your Stainless brake hose going above the bracket. I guess it's much better to have under the bracket to avoid that U turn bends on the copper tube, and I would say that the Hoses would be more "relaxed" than having a bend even at "rest."http://i561.photobucket.com/albums/ss55/rmrsasteel/brakeroute-1.jpg
And the washer bottle would be a bit off at the side of your "B" and making an extra effort of the bracket that holds it, Why not mount it inside the boot as what Rover did originally.?
Anyway my 2 cents worth of suggestion.
Looking good, be on the road soon?
As long as the wheel turns lock to lock without kinking or pulling on the brake hose and it doesn't foul on anything it would be ok as it is.
smart looking mini, keep it up.

Cheers Dowz - hopefully have it ready and on the road in August some time when we get to the heart of this starting issue...
Yeah the brake hoses are fine as they are, we tried them the way you suggested but discovered they were awefully close to the subframe and tie bars.. and the washer bottle looks snug where it is when the front end is mounted.

The springs on the front coilovers were uprated to 400lb, not sure on the rears, they are just the standard ones that came with the coilovers..

Hi fellas,
After good advice from wilp99 we have managed to completely bypass the immobiliser which did turn out to be the problem.
Although I didn't go down the route of de-soldering the Immob chip or bypassing it I bought a JDM OBD2a ECU that was on E-bay for the tidy sum of £42!!!.. I love E-bay!!...
Tried it today and........ she fired up first flick of the key!!... :-) :-) :-) :-) what a feeling!!!!....
Here are a few pics of how we mounted the ECU..

http://i654.photobucket.com/albums/uu263/Mintegra_album/ECU03.jpg
We also managed to get a windscreen in although we have discovered the new scuttle we put in has been the cause of the previous screens cracking - need to shave a bit off to get it to sit properly in the rubber..

Ive not had it up and running yet. Ive literally got 4 magnets, one glued to the back of each of the studs, then mounted the pickup on the backplate so its about 2mm from the magnets, then run the cable through inside of car. This is as far as Ive got with it!..
The sender I got was something like this:
https://www.europaspares.com/product_main_image.asp?image=/images/1877/1.jpg&width=0&height=250
andy b
07-03-2011, 01:55 PM
That's the same as I've got, why four magnets? I was going to use just the one.
Not sure I understood it fully though. Have you sorted the fuel gauge yet? I was thinking of asking smiths, they may have a fix for it.
Mintegra
07-03-2011, 02:04 PM
I remember reading somewhere that the more you have the better reading you recieve... dnot sure how true that is... it made sense for me to use 4, as the studs are evenly positioned around the hub centre. If you are mounting them to a drive shaft you wont have anyway of positioning accurately so 1 may be enough for you.
Not really got anywhere with this. Was hoping for an update from Spiyda on the matter. Might be worth contacting smiths though as it seems a common problem amongst us.
Quick Q for you - when your car is complete are you getting it SVA'd?
Cheers

andy b
07-03-2011, 02:13 PM
I wasn't going to but the more I read about it the more I may have to.
My understanding is because I've changed the bulkhead its classed as a new chassis. Is this right?
Mintegra
07-03-2011, 02:17 PM
Not 100% to be honest, Ive read lots of varying opinions. The reason I ask you is cos yours is one of the most modded Ive seen and if you were'nt going to then I definately wouldn't!. To be honest I can see it having its advantages in the future as these types of cars will most definately be targeted for safety reasons and not having an SVA may be the start of worse things to come...
andy b
07-03-2011, 02:24 PM
True it may but its a hole lot of hassle to s.v.a might just cross that bridge when I come to it. What about hayling mini his is pretty extreme?
Mintegra
07-03-2011, 02:33 PM
Remember watching Mark Evans take his cobra kitcar on a car is born to get SVA'd - this got me thinking is it only cars that have'nt been registered that need doing. But then checked the SVA site and saw 'amatuer built vehicles' which Im sure includes everyone on the site!.. although I know some people have'nt!.. damn it, cant make my mind up!... Yeah suppose it is aye, love the vid of his motor on the strip!...

I was under the impression that minis would fail the SVA/IVA test now due to external seams, sharp edges on the grill, external filler cap to name a few?

Coupe
07-03-2011, 07:41 PM
As Kam says, just MOT it when its done and you should be fine. Its only really if the MOT tester deems it necessary to report to VOSA (very rare), or VOSA pull you over for a spot check (even rarer) and the vehicle is deemed necessary to go for an IVA.
Lots and lots of people are driving cars on the road that technically should go through an IVA, but haven't. If the car has been built to a good standard, then you shouldn't have any issues.

Some of the Z cars people has sucessfully IVA'd there minis but as suspected trying to get a 50 plus year old design through modern regulations is a little differcult and very expensive, however external seams are okay, the roof guttering needs some sort of cover if it doesn't already have one like the MPI mini has. But there are plenty of other things that won't pass, here is a thread listing the work required to get a Z cars mini through the test

That's what I call dedication to plan design! ;)
Good job the grill with the deep red H in the middle would have been even better, hehehe

Made a start fitting the bonnet this weekend. Really keen to keep the amount of visible fixings to a minimum so this is what we came up with. The rear of the bonnet has tabs welded on it that slide under the scuttle panal so no fixings are required.
The only 2 fixings that will be seen are these. They still needs a bit of work to get lined up better, but initial tests seemed successful :-D

Also need to modify the fixings to mount the grille, But this is how its looking!..

I have the same style of keyed locks on my clubby bonnet too.Be warned mate get some spares in stock as the key can be removed when the lock is partly closed. so inaffect the latch is in the half unlocked posistion and you cant get the key back in,The only way to get the bonnet off then is to loosen the threaded part the lock fits in to and turn that which is all well and good if you can reach it,Im on my 3rd set now:mad:Car looks spot on by the way;)

I know what ya mean - noticed the lock actually spins through 180 degrees but the thing it locks into only requires 90 degree turn to lock...
Proving to be a bit tricky to set up to be honest. Not the easiest things to operate if you need to quickly shut the bonnet and be on your way!...
Grille looks awesome mate, amazing how long it takes to put things back together though!

Bonnet just needs painting and need to fix a rear number plate light on.

Here is the rear number plate light Ive decided to use. After months of searching on Ebay for something suitable, I stumbled upon it on the back of my old mans Midget!..
Decided to fill the recesses.

Then give a few coats of paint, all in all pretty happy with how its turned out.

That was through Adrian Flux. (31, 3000 miles, garaged, FNCB, All mods declared)
Gonna try HIC and Footman James (a few people on here seem to recommend these two)
