so as off saturday my 1996 1.3 spi is off the road and getting prep for the transplant :-)
im going with the watson frame (told thats the best ?) not ordered it yet but they say only 2 weeks to make
i will be running the 200vi for a while as ive found some holes on the heal board that needs weilding so might as well do everything while she is off the road
the front is already cut as ive got a curley frontend already
i will post some pics of here before / during and after i start the transplant
fingers crossed i should have everything done in a couple of mnths (work permiting lol)
ive never done anything like this before so if anyone can give me some direction that would be cool
cheers

heres a few pics of the donor car, im driving this for next month or so so i can get some bits weilded on the mini
might as well do every thing needed to the mini before i put the engine in :-)

and of course the must important part of the donor car :-)
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/2b16_4.jpg
im going to try and use the complete wiring loom from this car in the mini, also im going to try and see if i can make the dash fit so i have the clocks and airbags :-)
was thinking of cutting the mini boot floor out to so hopefully then i could squeeze the rover tank in . this way i should have no fueling probs as the fuel pump and electics for it are all there :-)

Airbag! I say that would be a BAD idea.
I believe the bags are designed for the individual car/seat position. Putting a R200 airbag in your mini could cause a greater injury in the event of a crash.
But each to thier own!

cheers for that pickup
glad u told me as i never thought of that
That donour car looks to good to cut up.
What frame are you going to use and what gearbox?
Are you keeping standard front? sorry for the qustions just intrested.

http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00117.jpg
got my best mate DAZ(between use we have managed everything on our minis, no job to big lol ) helping me with this project
as he is HELPING me do this project think its only fare to give him some credit and not do like SOME people i no do and take all the credit lol
to answer mates question, the frame im going to use is a watson hopefully with a bit of moding (oil filter etc ) i will not have to use a extended front, esp since my front is carbon ,hoping i can still use it lol but will have to wait and see
as for gear box im not sure yet, im told im best to use the one on it but also been told it will be a very very tight fit lol so again i will just have to wait and see when i get there

seeing im painting the entire car, top to bottom ,ive decied to try and remove all the years of UNDERSEAL (waxonol) that are in the arches and underneath
BUT as you can see from the pic its about 1cm thick !!!! anyone got any ideas how to get this off ?????
apart from wot i am doing SCRAPING it with a knife :-( :-( :-(
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00197.jpg
well thats it for today,
hopefully now i will get more time to really get started and going on this project
im just starting to build a spit frame so i can turn her 360 degrese so i can get to the underneath easier for repair and painting
ive took the measurements and my design for it just need to cut the metal and weild the frame up now, then get the mini on it so i can really get going on the repairs/conversion
it will have wheels on the frame so i can push it out the garage for better light and more room.
GRIFF2494
06-06-2008, 09:10 PM
WELL I WAS GOING TO BUY A SPIT FRAME TO TURN HER 360 DEGREES SO ITS EASIER TO REPAIR
BUT....... IM A TIGHT ASS SO THOUGHT I WOULD TRY BUILDING MY OWN LOL,
I MANAGED TO GET SOME BOX SECTION WHILE OUT DRIVING LAST NIGHT, IT JUST FELL INTO MY CAR BOOT PMSL
SO TODAY ONCE HOME FROM WORK I THOUGHT I WOULD GET MY GRINDER AND WEILDER OUT AND START TRYING TO MAKE MY SPIT FRAME
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00204.jpg
IVE MADE IT
9 FOOT LONG
5.5 FOOT WIDE
THE SPIT POLE IS 4 FOOT OFF THE GROUND (IM HOPINGTHAT SHOUD GIIVE ME PLENTY OF CLEARANCE ????? )
IVE ALSO WELDEDWHEELS ON THE FRAME SO I CAN MOVE IT AROUND, ALSO IVE BOLTED THE FRAME IN PLACES SO I CAN EASLY STORE T AFTER :-)

Get a wire wheel attachment for your angle grinder. Looking good so far.
I certainly hope the headlight peaks won't be on the finished product?

well day two of the spit build, seems to be going well (apart from my welder keep miss feeding and snapping the wirer)
here are some more progress pics of the spit, hope fully day three will be it all finished, then i just have to figure out how to ge my car on it lol.
hoping a trolley jack and some wood will lift it high enough to get it to the high i need to fix it to the spit .

AND NOw ITS FINISHED !!!!!!! :-)
here is the finished product :-) it was so easy to make cant believe i was going to buy one so glad i decided to try and build one my self :-)

http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00215.jpg
tommorrow hopefully i can get my mini up on it, so i can get started fixing her up and get on with the conversion !!!!!!!!!
the wheels should make it easy to pull out the garage for better light :-)
the bottom of the frame is bolted together so if needed i can just use it as stands and not use the wheel section
GRIFF2494
09-06-2008, 08:20 PM
well ive packed it all away now as you can see
this is so i can now go re-assemble it in the garage and start work
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00216.jpg
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00217.jpg
MAJOR PROBLEM !!!!!! :-(
JUST RETAKEN SOME MEASUREMENTS. I NEED TO LOOSE A FOOT IN HEIGHT BY EITHER TAKING THE WHEELS OFF :-( OR CHOPPING IT DOWN BY A FOOT :-( ELSE I WONT BE ABLE TO PULL IT IN AND OUT THE GARAGE
BUT ONCE I CHOP IT BY A FOOT IN HEIGHT THESE WILL GET IN THE WAY :( :-( :-(
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00219.jpg
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00218.jpg
AND AS U CAN SEE I DONT WANT TO LOOSE THESE SUPPORTS
IF I LENGHTEN THE TOTAL FRAME BY 2 FOOT I CAN GET ROUND THIS BUT DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT SIZE BOX SECTION STEEL WILL FIT NICE AND TIGHT IN SIDE 2 X 2 BOX SECTION????????
IF I CAN GET SOME TO SLIDE IN I CAN FIX MY PROBLEM VERY EASILY:-)
ONLY OTHER THING I WILL NEED IS A LONGER METAL POLE AS THE 10 FOOT WILL NEED TO BE 12 FOOT

Hi,
I was going to say, Mini is about 10Ft.
You might want weld in tube with nut and bolt, so that you can rotate and fix at the point.
I have made mine with scafolding poles.
I will try and see if mine will fit my ca or not when I bring my Mini over from my parents' garage.
Cheers

Hay, just turn the uprights around so the angled bits are on the outside.

GRIFF2494
10-06-2008, 07:26 PM
well i was going to turn the ends round but have noticed if i do i will oose more lenght :-( so instead im welding 2 foot more of box section on this will sort my problem out
seeing mine all ready has the front end removed i only need 8 foot space for the car so once the extra 2 foot is added there is plenty of room to keep the suports that have been coursing the problem now i have lowered the height by a foot :-)
so now i can spin her fine and still pull the spit in and out the garage with the car attached :-) :-) :-)
GRIFF2494
11-06-2008, 07:39 PM
well ive welded the extra 2 foot on te bottom of the frame so now it 12 foot long
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00220.jpg
and also another 4 foot on the pole
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00221.jpg
i spoke to a pro welder who said as long as when i weld them together i angle/tapper the edges where i weld i shuld have no probs with the strenght of the new lenght
just need to grind the weld on the pole flat so it will slid throw the pole easily

Are you welding that with Mig or firing it on with a catapult

Nice spit. Maybe you should start a seperate post where we can compare spits. Here is my attempt.
http://aycu11.webshots.com/image/46250/2001237915266850781_rs.jpg (http://allyoucanupload.webshots.com/v/2001237915266850781)
I recommend stauff (probably spelt wrong) clamps as they allow you to clamp the body at any angle. How are you going to attach the pole to the body and stop it rotating?
GRIFF2494
11-06-2008, 08:17 PM
well seeing im not welder by trade im happy with the weldig ive done!!!!!!.but can always come show me better :-
as for holding the car at a angle im not sure yet lol, think i might try wot welsy has done

Here's my spit
http://www.16vminiclub.com/gallery/albums/userpics/IMG_0017s.jpg
I drilled a hole in the tubes the spit pipe goes through, welded a nut over each hole, then drilled holes in the spit pipe so I could stop the rotation at pre set places.
I welded a piece of re-bar on the head the bolts, and cut the threds off the ends to go in the holes in the spit pipe.
Do this before you put the Mini on the spit. it's hard to do after
Also the spit pipe will sag, so be sure to give enugh room for clearence when you spin your Mini.

well now the spit is done i spent this afternoon trying to make a bracket to attach the pole to the front of the car, tommorrow hope fully i will get chance to make the back one as well :-)
hope my weld is strong enough for the job
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00228.jpg
i think it should be but time will tell lol
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00227.jpg
as u can see below ive gone for a bracket that i can bolt through the tower bolt holes, this seems to me to be the strongest part at the front
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00225.jpg
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00226.jpg
as u can see above ive cut the hole in the back seat slightly bigger than needed to allow for any angle changes needed when i make the rear bracket if its not quite central :-) lol
does anyone think ive mounted this wrong ? as never done anything like this before and would hate for my car to fall off the spit lol if anyone has a better idea where to mount the bracket please speak up

well im pretty pissed off !!!! while i was taking interior etc out i thought seeing i was building the front backet i would take the pedal box etc out only thing is the TWAT that had the car before me has already had the pedal box out before and broke the fucking bolts so instead of fixing it correctly he has WELDED it on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x

hi all,
well its been a week or two since i last updated
ive been working so not had time to do much, and when been at home its been raining so NO WELDING :(
i finished the spit and after lots of trial and error with 2 trolly jacks ,4 axle stands and 8 breize blocks i finally managed to get my mini to the right height, so i could fit the pole through the car and into the spit :) :) :)
as u can see below she sits just right and spins wth an all round clearance so now im happy and can begin my build/repair :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00057mini.jpg
i will up date over the weekend as hopefully if weather is good , i will pull her out the garage and get lots done :) :) :) (HOPEFULLY !!!!!!!! )
GRIFF2494
29-06-2008, 07:10 PM
well like promised its sunday and i thought i would do a quick update.
well the day started off very well as u can see below, car spins well and i welded a bracket on the pole so i could turn her nice and easy :-)
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00240.jpg
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00238.jpg
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00239.jpg
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00241.jpg
after that the day began to turn into a nightmare !!!!!!!!!!!! lol :-(
i started scraping the waxonal off the bottom of her sills
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00242.jpg
then i thought i better do things in a logical order instead of just going on scraping , so i took off the rear coil overs, raduis arms, rear beam etc and found this !!!!!!!!!!!! :-( :-( :-(
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00247.jpg
that upset me but never mind as had all ready won some heal board repair panels on ebay :-) so can have some fun fitting those NOT !!!!!
next i was in two minds whether to fit new sills both sides or just say fuck and get the full replacement floor section
i decided i would just fit new sills so i started to remove one side
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00244.jpg
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00243.jpg
all seemed to be going well until i found a patch of rust on the inner sill , cant see from inside the car ony once outer sill removed !!!!!
after poking around a bit my day went horrible when i found this !!!!!!! :( :( :( :( :(
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00248.jpg
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00249.jpg
not only had the dreaded rust got part of the inner sill it has eaten a section of the floor too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :(
right under the main box section that give the main support to the car !!!!
so thats it im taking the plunge and treating her to a complete new floor !!!!!!! i just now need to get a spot welder !!!!!! as i only have a mig and im sure a spot welder will do a much better job????
so after seeing all my holes and ££££££££ im going to have to spend i put her away again
till tomorrow :-)
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00251.jpg
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00250.jpg
so im just drowing my sorows now with a pint of rum and coke :) :) :) :) :)
IF ANYONE HAS OR KNOWS WHERE I CAN GET A SPOT WELDER FROM THAT WILL NOT COST ME AN ARM AND A LEG PLEASE CONTACT ME!!!!!
will update again tomorrow
chrisg
29-06-2008, 07:43 PM
some people say the little carbon electrode type atachments for ark welders are good, never tryed it myself but tempted if i ever need some spot welding done. and trust me! those floors are mint compared to some :D

2 x inner sills
2 x outter sills
2 x a panels
1 x rear valance
2 x inner wings
MANY THANKS TO MY MATE " DEZ " for givng me many of th above panels :-)
just need scuttle panel and top rail now then i have a new car lol
GRIFF2494
05-07-2008, 08:51 PM
well its the weekend again
thought i would do some more on my baby but when i awoke it was pissing it down :-(
around 2ish it stopped so i thought i would start taking my inner sill out
but first i would have to take out the rear bin, which was cool by me as i wanted to take them out and the back seat right up to the heal board
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00256.jpg
as u can see its out on the drivers side just need to grind it flush
once the bin was out i started to grind the inner sill back till the spot welds broke
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00259.jpg
as u can see from above the welds on the inner sill are now free :-)
so once i cut the sill at the front and back it should just fall out, but before i cut the sill out totaly i want to weld a bar across the door frame to stop any distorstion in the body
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00257.jpg
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00258.jpg
thats all ive got done today as have to go get pissed as at a bbq :-( much pref to spend the time on the car
will do more and update again tomorrow
ps found after 10 mins of trying to get the bitchamin up off the floor with a screw driver that the air chisel does it 100 times better/cleaner
GRIFF2494
06-07-2008, 08:09 PM
well its sunday weather i shit again :-( rain rain rain whens the sun coming
anyway seeing i can turn her an run electric to my garage now i started to do a bit more
first i tack welded a bar across the door opening to ensure when i remove the complete inner sill the car did not flex out of shape
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00260.jpg
once this was in i could finish off grinding the last spot welds then start cutting the old sill away from the floor ,seeing i was leaving the centre box section in place i started by only cutting the front 1/2 out
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00261.jpg
once semi happy with that i started on the rear 1/2 leaving the bit of inner sill still attached to the centre box section
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00262.jpg
as u can see above the heel board def needs repairing
once front and rear bits of sill where out i got the air chisel on the centre box to remove the remaining sill from on that, which then left me with this
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00263.jpg
next i got the new inner sill and tried to see how good a fit it was ,had no chance till i removed some patching plates that where in the drives foot well as could not get right into the corner plus with the heel board like that i had no chance ,so had to take a hour or so fitting the heelboard replacement panel (then refit the rear beam to ensure it was correct )
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00264.jpg
once the above where completed i got the sill and slid it in place
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00265.jpg
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00266.jpg
clamped it all up around the door step ready to plug weld it there
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00267.jpg
as u can see it fits nicely and its clamped up ready for me to weld it in tom night when home from work,i will post again tom hopefully it will weld up nicely with no warping lol ( bit at a time ,changing ends)

well once home from work thought i would give welding the sill in
ive never tred plug welding before was easier than i thought lol
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00270.jpg
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00269.jpg
as you can see dont think it went to badly
but then i had to seam wld the rest of the joins along the floor
this has not gone as wel :-(
first i tacked it . then begain, only thing is that wot ever setting i put the welder on it blows holes throw the new sill after about 2 sec
its getting tere but will not be totaly welded in till tom now
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00271.jpg
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00272.jpg
if anyone has any ideas how to stop it blowing hole please tell me
spNOam
07-07-2008, 08:54 PM
Stop welding after 1.5 sec & start again for 1.5 sec etc etc leaving the metal to cool a bit between stops & starts, with a bit of practice you can produce some nice runs with good penetration.
GRIFF2494

thanks for your help spNOam
ive followed wot u said and it worked a treat :-)
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00278.jpg
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00279.jpg
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00277.jpg
as u see its taken well, tomorrow i just need to grind some parts back abite ,once panted imsure it will look sweet :-)
as for penetration as u see below its def done that :-)
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00274.jpg
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00280.jpg
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00281.jpg
next i need to fit the new outer sill :-) would i be best to waxonol the inner sill first or will it burn when welding the new outer sill???? i could all ways spray some in after throw the inspection holes??????
ludsonline
09-07-2008, 07:34 AM
Project looking really good m8.
You should be ok with waxoyl in there. When I did mine I sprayed it all with weld through primer then masked up the areas where I was going to weld and applied two good layers of top coat then waxoyl and then welded the sill on. :D
bhphunter
09-07-2008, 09:26 AM
Id give it all some paint first then squirt waxoil in the holes once welded up. Remember that the black paint on panels is a 'transport' paint and should really be rubbed down prior to paint.
Ive had some panels where it has been applied well and others where it has scratched off with my finger nail
GRIFF2494
11-07-2008, 08:39 PM
well i took your advice ludsonline
and went shopping for some weld throw primer :-) ( fuck me it exspensive , wel the wife thought so anyway lol )
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00283.jpg
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00284.jpg
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00288.jpg
as u can see from the above pics ive primed the out side of the inner sill and also along the seam on the inside of the car
next i tested the outer sill for fit, had to go with the dreaded over sills else u would see the join where the new inner sill joins with the floor (but at least seeing ive put them on my self i no there not on over a rusty old sill like they normaly are :- ) ) i must admit NOT the best fit :-(
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00285.jpg
but once the hammer came out and a bit of reshapng :-) they fit snug :-)
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00286.jpg
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00287.jpg
had to do the same as with the iner sill as i still have no spot welde to had to pool weld it on but theres no way it will come off lol
once on i went rond with the other product i got today ,some seam selant
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00291.jpg
ran over it with some water to try and get a semi smooth finish
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00290.jpg
(the lumps in the pic are just thewater )
heres the finished look from out side
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00289.jpg
for my first ever change of inner sill, outer sill and heel board panel im very hppy with the end product
and as for the other side where im going to do all the same again hopefully it wil not take half as long :-)
then once thats done ,and the boot floor and the air vents i can get on with the good stuff :-) but t least once finished i no all the rust will also be done as well as the engine :-)

How come you've put oversills on? make sure you put some drainage holes in, or glug glug glug :!:
GRIFF2494
11-07-2008, 10:23 PM
i no they always say over sills are bad as cover all kinds of sins, but seeing ive put new inner sills in no theres no rust or problems
if i had put proper outter sills on i would not have been able to cover he joins in the floor all u would see is this
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00271.jpg
as outer sill would not cover
GRIFF2494
12-07-2008, 07:44 PM
well its another day and ive found more holes lol :-(
only had a couple of hrs today to play with her so not much done today, but saying that in the short time i had ,,,,,,it up set me lol
well first i started cutting the rest of the back seat and the remaining bin out
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00292.jpg
as u can see if u look in the corner theres a big hole :-(
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00293.jpg
and thats all i got done today hardly worth posting lol
and this is wot i was left with in my garage
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00294.jpg
just a pile of rust and bitumen on the floor
GRIFF2494
12-07-2008, 07:48 PM
god i so cantwait till this body work shit is all done so i can start posting some interesting stuff, and start her looking like a 16v mini
GRIFF2494
13-07-2008, 07:15 PM
WELL ITS SUNDAY AND I HAD TO WORK TODAY :-( LOL
so i only had 3-4hrs of playing with her
i thought i would take the rest of the bitumen up off the rest of the floors to see if there was anymore areas that need attention
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00295.jpg
and there was to my horror !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00297.jpg
i was in 2 minds wether to weld a plate over it or to do it properly and cut the rust out and make a panel that will fit flush with the rest of the floor, my mate daz made me see reason that i may as well do it properly :-)
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00298.jpg
so i cut the rot out !!!!
once the plate to repair the hole was cut i tacked a bolt to it so i could hold it just where needed as i tacked the plate in
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00299.jpg
then i seam welded it all up ,a bit at a time to make sure nothing warped
once finished i ground it back ready to prime it
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00300.jpg
gave it a good coat of zinc primer both sides
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00301.jpg
thaen i ran seam sealant round the welds for good measure
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00306.jpg
im in to minds now ref the other inner sill ,shall i replace the total inner sill or patch it ,as u can see below
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00302.jpg
tried to get a panoramic shot so u can see all the rust/rot/holes :-(
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00303.jpg
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00304.jpg
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00305.jpg
but as u can see it did not quite work lol makes the sill look even worse pmsl
think at the end of the day i will end up putting the new complete innersill in ,if not i will never be happy knowing i did half a job lol
and in the long run it will cost me more as will need to do it all again in a few years!!!!!
dazlee
14-07-2008, 10:34 PM
dont blame me?
its always better to cut the rust out than to just cover it over and forget about it as the latter norm makes it worse lol

well ive been after a spot welder since i started this project but never have the funds to buy one :-(
so after some research i found this on ebay
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/sptgun.jpg
with that all i needed was a arc welder, after looking on ebay i started to bid on some arc welders (there as cheap as chips) and i won this
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/welder2.jpg
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/welder1.jpg
so was well happy esp as only cost me £43 :-) so with the arc and my good old trusty sip gasless mig welder i thought !!!!!!!!i had all areas covered !!!!!!
but then the good old mig decided fuck it and stopped working :-(
so i was prity pissed off :-( antill my mate had a mig for sale, only used twice and not wanting to much for it :-) (still broke the bank lol )
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00308.jpg
but at least now i have a proper mig that should do me for years :-)

I see the large Abingdon minis sticker in the window, would that be Abingdon oxforshire? If it is i have a spot welder you can borrow, I'm only in wantage. Might have to buy some 1/8th copper rod for electrodes though (its an old school one, so you have to time it you self). Also for removing underseal you want some of these!
http://www.arro.ie/36809.jpg
I used 3 of these in my grinder and stripped the whole underside of my mini back to metal in 1 day! They also come in flat and cup shapes. Mill hill tools in Didcot sell good ones, the screwfix ones fall apart in seconds. Trouble is, once you clean the floor you'll find alsorts of nasties!

Im pretty sure that flywheel wont work :( . You need to try and find a 1.6 flywheel from a car that had mpi injection. But first you are best to take the flywheel out of your vvc and we can try and find out exactly what flywheel you will need. A 1.6 flywheel will be best because the bigger cluth will bolt on to it.
It shouldnt cost alot but will be hard to find one.

looking on metro power and you will need a flywheel from a r65u which was used in rover 416 and a 216. These flywheels are 4 pole flywheels but im not sure but it may be possible to use any mpi twincam engine flywheels from the old k series engines (before they went to mems 3 ecus).

the coil overs!!!!!!!
because how the car fits on the spit, the hole where the top of the coil over

http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00457.jpg
they will be very nice and tight once cut correctly to shape and all welded up
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00458.jpg
as u can see above the solid mounting ring fits lovely and tight so once bolted up with tower bolts as well im sure the frontsub will not be moving any where :D :D :D :D :D
doing the floor mounts in morning once ive finishd these (and its not to late to grind lol )

well got up and out to the garage early today :) (well around 9 ish )
first thing to do was try making some floor mounts for the subframe
:? :? :? :?
well to my surprise they where very easy :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
(not perfet to look at but do the job :D :D :D and im ure will look sweetonce painted)
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00472.jpg
again i think the hardest part was trying t get a drill throw the 3mm steel :(
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00473.jpg
GRIFF2494
20-08-2008, 05:04 PM
once that was done i finally got round to finishing of the tower mount panels by closing them up (now i no they work lol, and the tower bolts line up )
:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00474.jpg
GRIFF2494
20-08-2008, 05:16 PM
ive put the subframe back on so i could drill the holes throw the floor for the new mounts
( doing it this way mde sure i only drilled the holes needed not 20 of them trying to get it right lol)
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00475.jpg
still can decide if i need to put a plate this side too for extra strenght to the floor or just put big washers
ludsonline
20-08-2008, 05:18 PM
Put a 3mm plate in there m8 to spread the load..
Looks like a really good build and it is speeding along.

(never taken a scuttle off before,so took a section at a time off, als seeing not got panel yet i dont no how height to go t corners,so ive left lots )
GRIFF2494
20-08-2008, 05:26 PM

http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00485.jpg
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00486.jpg
then i found this near the bonne hing :( :( :( :( (after some digging around under the muck)
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00487.jpg
GRIFF2494
20-08-2008, 05:34 PM

http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00488.jpg
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00489.jpg
at least seeing i no how bad the rot had been on the car up to now i had al ready got the repair plates :) , had a idea i might need them lol
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00490.jpg

GRIFF2494
24-08-2008, 06:06 PM
well thats me back now :D
whilse i was in england i went and picked up my scuttle panel :D :D
just first needed to fix the holes around the vents

GRIFF2494
24-08-2008, 06:16 PM
well i must say
got back at 0645 this morning raring to start :D ,but could not till 0900 (it is snday mornng lol, think i might of upset people if i had started grinding at that time lol)
anyway i had forgot how bad both sides where :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :(
so of course i thought i would practic on the easier side first lol
after cleanng it up a bit it looked lik this
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00492.jpg
(i wanted to cover the vent anyway lol )
after a quick line up of the new plate , i got the grinder out to make a
rought outline of wot i needed to remove to rid my self of the rot
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00493.jpg
GRIFF2494
24-08-2008, 06:21 PM
well its out
(no going back now lol)
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00494.jpg
seeing the hing plate was in good order , i removed that section off the repair panel (now no need to remove the A panel :D ) and tacked it n to ensure i was happy with the fit (non gen prt so of course it needs some tlc frm the hammer !!!!! lol )
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00495.jpg
GRIFF2494
24-08-2008, 06:25 PM
seamed it all up to ensure its nice and solid
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00497.jpg
a very quick run round with the grinder to tidy it up
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00498.jpg
(must say my welding is gtting much beter now :D :D :D :D but u coud argue i had lots of practic latly pmsl)
GRIFF2494
24-08-2008, 06:28 PM
then all i had to do was tidy it up inside the car
thought best thin to do was weld that too lol then once seam sealant over it it will look sweet :)
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00499.jpg
GRIFF2494
24-08-2008, 06:34 PM
now the practic side is done !!!! :D :D :D :D its time to try and tacke the BITCH of a side
again i clened it all up to see wot i had to over, and try and fnd solid metal
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00500.jpg
thought i had found solid metal but as u can see while marking where to cut i found more so had to cut more
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00501.jpg
GRIFF2494
24-08-2008, 06:40 PM
bloody rotten fucking vent is out at last :D :D :D :D :D
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00502.jpg
again i sizd plate up, cut off hing part as hing plate is in good cond (looks like last owner changed the hing plate :D only fucking thing he did do !!!!!!!!!!)
and welded it on
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00503.jpg
only thing is i need to ake another plate to cover the hole remaining in the inner wing :(
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00504.jpg
GRIFF2494
24-08-2008, 06:44 PM
other plate made, welded in and ground quickly back :D
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00505.jpg
just need to seam seal and prim it now (solid again both vents :D :D :D :D and in the end very easy to do :D :D :D )
again ran some weld round the inside (car)of the new plate
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00506.jpg
GRIFF2494
24-08-2008, 06:49 PM
WAS going to fit new scuttle !!!!!!
but me being me thought fuck it, i will do wot ive been thinking of for ages :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
(not to sure if i should of though lol     )
i got grinder back out and did this
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00507.jpg
then cut it even further out
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00508.jpg
GRIFF2494
24-08-2008, 06:54 PM
as u can see the this side of the inner wing still looks a bit worse for wear :( :( :( :(
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00509.jpg
so decided whilse modding the bulkhead i would also make plates for both sides of the inside of the inner wings :D
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00510.jpg
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00512.jpg
GRIFF2494
24-08-2008, 06:58 PM
only prob no is im runing out of metal
:( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :(
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00513.jpg
that all i have left
GRIFF2494
24-08-2008, 07:04 PM
sized the bottom plate up and placed it to make sure it fits
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00515.jpg
and it does :D (still need to grind lip of bulkhead flush with plate)
tommorow im going to cut a hole in the new bottom plate (aprrox 7"x10")
so i an weld a battery box in so once fnished the battery will be in the bulkhead under the scuttle plate)
:D :D :D :D :D :D :D
hopefully should get bulkhead mod finished tom, and hopefully get the scuttle fitted and blended in :D
GRIFF2494
25-08-2008, 05:51 PM
i got it wrong
thought i had cut the bottom panel out to right size !!!!!! but i got it so fucking wrong
never thought that the lip i had left on while i measured would hide so fucking much of a gap!!!!!!!!! :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :(
once that was grided away and the panel put in place it left me with round about 1/2 cm gap !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
all i could do seeing i had all ready cut the metal was fill the gap up with weld while i welded it in     (lucky i have lots of wirer and gas !!!!!!!)
after a fucking lot of grinding it looks like this
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00516.jpg
GRIFF2494
25-08-2008, 06:01 PM
well now im fucked off even more !!!!!!!!!!!! went to town to get some thinner metal so i can bend it when joining to under the scuttle/front screen.
BUT ITS FUCKING BANK HOLIDAY!!!!!!
so every where is fucking CLOSED :( :( :( :( :(
GRIFF2494
25-08-2008, 06:13 PM
after hrs of trying, cutting and getting total pissed off with it :( i finall decided that the metal i had ws to thick :( (2mm) sowill have to wait till tom :( :( :(
was going t say fuck it and have a early finished when i spotted my old battry box sitting in the corner
mmmmm will it fit in the new space ive made :?: will i be able to get it in /out once the scuttle was on :?: :?: :?:
so i got the old tape measure out again, and it will work :D :D (i THINK lol)
GRIFF2494
25-08-2008, 06:20 PM
well
afte more cutting/welding and grinding
the bat box is in :D :D :D :D :D :D
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00517.jpg
nothing more i an do today so calling it a day, hope tom is a more poductive day !!!!!!!!!
chrisg
25-08-2008, 08:33 PM
this is a very fruity build! took me a few attempts at the swear filter to find out what mango was
calm down man, it'l all be fine, certainly entertaining for everyone else
GRIFF2494
25-08-2008, 09:19 PM
glad u r enjoying my fruit pmsl
pickmeup
25-08-2008, 10:11 PM
coming along very nicely mate! im enjoying this build as its fast paced, i think mine will be slowing down very soon tho :(
Miniwidow
26-08-2008, 10:31 AM
hehe I've just had to have a go at the swear filter too
(just come across orange, lol :D )
Entertaining build, keep it up :D :D
GRIFF2494
26-08-2008, 07:01 PM
well i must have a go with this fucking swear filter pmsl
GRIFF2494
26-08-2008, 07:06 PM
anyway no more playin with that fucking filter lol
i managed to get some more sheet metal today :D :D :D :D (could not get 1 mm so had to settle with 1.6mm)
so i started TRYING to buld my new bulk head
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00518.jpg
just tacking in place to see how it looks, first ensuring i had space for the rear of my clocks to still sit
GRIFF2494
26-08-2008, 07:11 PM
once ihad ensured the room for the clocks was ok , i started to build, tack the restof the bulkhead together
i used thin metal i had layng around to get the shape i was looking for :D :D :D :D :D (totaly my own idea lol ,1 of a kind !!!)
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00519.jpg
building it up
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00520.jpg
(not prity ,but gives me the shape i want)
GRIFF2494
26-08-2008, 07:17 PM
trying to get the shape/angle ofthe windscreen was a fucking nightmare !!!!!!!!!!!!! (swear filter again lol)
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00521.jpg
in the end i decided just to cut it up close, then once all panels are in i will run a flexibe piece of metal (thin) along to join to windscreen (same thickness of the org bulkhead, thus should allbe same thickness a ord ie nside top rail, new bulkhead and scuttle
GRIFF2494
26-08-2008, 07:24 PM
was happy so decided to fit the proper plate now :D :D :D :D
but then !!!!!
my own fault for saying i had lots!!!!! :( :( :( the FUCKING gas went in my mig :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :(
and its not pay day till friday :( :( :( :( :(
so had to carry on with my new arc welder i won on ebay (only cost £40 :D :D :D )
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/welder1-1.jpg
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/welder2-1.jpg
all i can say is mig is much pissing easier to use !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
GRIFF2494
26-08-2008, 07:25 PM
anyway i found it much harder using it
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00522.jpg
(fitted this plate and the one for other side
GRIFF2494
26-08-2008, 07:33 PM
then place the scuttle on to see wot the bulkhead will look like with it on
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00524.jpg
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00525.jpg
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00526.jpg
i think once grinded, sealed, primed and painted it will look asume (in my opion anyway lol)
and im sure it must have strenghted the bulkhead area :D :D :D :D
also now battery is at front (and will be very easy now to fit a emer cut off switch :D :D )
and plenty of room for the clocks and more space for the injector/air intake for the engine
just need to get some more gas so i can finish the finishing plate and fit the scuttle propely
:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D (im happy as a pig in shit with my first attempt :D :D :D )
GRIFF2494
26-08-2008, 07:35 PM
so with no gas i think i will only be able to clean the rest of the bulkhead tomorrow ready for priming/painting
may also try and cut out the shapes i need out of my 3mm metal for my coil over top arm brackets
I'm digging that! Very "fruity" .
Can you get the battery in and out without too much trouble?
GRIFF2494
26-08-2008, 08:29 PM
yep
the bat goes in and out loverly :) :) :D :D :D :) :)
yep

:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00527.jpg
GRIFF2494
27-08-2008, 04:22 PM
well got nothing done today :(

so called it a day :x :x
GRIFF2494
28-08-2008, 07:07 PM
well after another look at the new after market scuttle i decided it was not anywhere near a good fit as i first thought :( :( :( :(
esp seeing most of the lip from the inner to rail had rotted away
:( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :(
BUT THANKS TO MY GOOD MATE DEZ !!!!!! ive managed to lay my hands on a brand new scuttle and top rail :D :D (all gen parts to :D :D :D )
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00531.jpg
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00532.jpg
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00533.jpg
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00534.jpg
as you can see when gen and after market are to gether the quailty is totaly diff
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00536.jpg
this one is crap!!!!!!!! and it still cost £59 so not even the cheapest on the market !!!!!!!
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00535.jpg
def proves the point gen is BEST !!!!!
GRIFF2494
28-08-2008, 07:11 PM
once i had managed to get the inner top rail in place (fucking nightmare to line up with no scuttle or blkhead wall to macth it too!!!!!!!!!
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00542.jpg
it all seems to fit nice and tight :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00541.jpg
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00540.jpg
only hope i dont fuck up weldng both panels in
GRIFF2494
28-08-2008, 07:24 PM
but the welding will have to wait till pay day as still no gas     (payday tom :D :D :D :D :D :D )
so i decided to paint the boot inside floor with the new zinc primer i got :D :D :D
going to zinc prim eveywhere i can inside and out
(hopefull will stop any fucking rust coming back!!!!!!!!!)
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00544.jpg
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00545.jpg
also did the under side of the scuttle
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00543.jpg
and the new panels where the vents where!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00546.jpg
will zinc the modded bulkead once finishing panel is weldedi n and scuttle on top of it ( :D :D :D :D tomorrow!!!!!!!! :D :D :D :D )
then as far as i no apart from a bit of filler where ive welded in places like rear valance/boot (that will be done just before spraying!!!!!!!!!!!!)
thats the body all DONE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!(thank fuck!!!!!!!!)
so can get on with the GOOD STUFF :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

28-08-2008, 08:18 PM
Comin on well there 8) I bought a patern scuttle for a car i built last year and it was a brilliant fit. Just your luck who it's from. I also bought a lot of Heritage panels and felt i didn't really need to once i had them.
GRIFF2494

first think was t make some kind of finshing/closing panel for top of my modded bulkhead
(harder than i thought it wolud be becauseof the shape i had done :( :( had to use lots of littleplates to keep the shape for the windcreen)
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00548.jpg
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00548.jpg

Nice work Dad, lot of hard work gone into this, hope it comes out as you wanted it to.
Lot of money spent aswell :P
Think the green will look really nice aswell, what color yo planning on spraying the rest of the car ? or are you sticking with the red ?
can't wait until it's finished, will be even more of a beast than it already was haha
1. Keep it standard length. It is a bit of extra work, but its worth it.
2. Take those eyebrow things off. They are automotive g-heyness.
GRIFF2494
20-09-2008, 08:54 PM
will have a look at trying to keep her the standard lenght
and as for the light covers i like them so thy will stop on :-)
GRIFF2494
21-09-2008, 05:03 PM
well today was very productive day :-)
got lots of little/bu time consuming jobs finally done :D :D :D :D
fisrt i started by sanding off the filler i had put on the back end
when i fitted the new boot floor and rear valance i noticed that the top piece of metal (the bot floor piece)was totaly shot so i choped it off and welded the new floor to the ord back end, this obvionusly left weld ,marks to thus need for the dreaded layer of filler :( i hate filer but its made it look as it should lol)
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00622.jpg
GRIFF2494
21-09-2008, 05:26 PM
then i started to fill the front scuttle where i had joined the replacement one to the old part
one side you cant tell its a perfect join :D :D :D :D
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00620.jpg
the other side i think needs a bit more sanding/filler :( :( :( :( :(
(need more filler, have to wait till payday :-( )
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00621.jpg
both sides just need a small amount of the lip grinding off to come in ine with the old one, mind u once side cover strip is o u want see it any way
GRIFF2494
21-09-2008, 05:31 PM
next was time to make andweld in three new plates !!!!!!!!
2 to cover where the old steering colume came throw and bolted in (same on other side /for the left hand drive )
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00615.jpg
and one to fill in the hole i had made for the new steering rack pionion :-)
if fitted this one flush, it wa the perfect size/shape to fit :-)
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00616.jpg
GRIFF2494
21-09-2008, 05:37 PM
a bit more grinding off of the weld
and a good coating of seam sealant :D
and here u go does not look to fucking bad in my opinion :D
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00618.jpg
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00617.jpg
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00619.jpg
(just a shame i did not have a stiff paint brush that way i could have gota lovely seam look instead of a lumpy, thrown on look :-( never mind once painted it will look ok :-)
and with the old holes covered and seamed there should be no water getting in :-)
GRIFF2494
21-09-2008, 05:44 PM
next after seeing it on a classic car rebuild program on sky
i nipped to halfords and got another 5 litres of WAXONAL
to do the entire inside floor, bulkhead, roof, doors and boot !!!!!
they recon apart from making it water tight and stopping/proventing rust it helps to sound proof from road noise :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/jogriffin/DSC00623.jpg
