I know i should PM, but this info may be of use to other people!
Firstly, what car whas your engine sourced from? as the manifold looks more compact than that used on the SPi 16v'ers or is this manifold the same for all multi-point engines?
secondly, drive shaft angle aside, was tehre anythign else that had a serious affect on engine placement?i.e. could it be possible to get round the oil filter-tie bar issue with sligtly different engine placement? Im useing a clubby front so got more freedom in just about every direction!
thirdly, click this link http://www.16vminiclub.com/gallery/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=10158&pos=7 as you havnt replied! and may not have seen it!
fourth(ly!?) what did you do with regards to the clutch? as i notice you have retained the master cylinder.
Thanks again :) apologies for al the questions, as im stil un-decided which hybrid route to go down![/url]

ohk jsut noticed you have 2 different engines? any issues between them? and what cars were they sourced from?
and one last question for now :) where did you source/what gearbox did you use? and from what cars are these avaliable?
Cheers,
denis.

Right.
I am now on my second engine as my first one died on me, through no fault of its own.
The one with the metal intake manifold is the old one form a metro GTI.
The new one is from a 03 reg Rover 25.
Gearbox's came with the cars! Both were the same ratio's if I remember.
Although they should be the same power I think the newer one is slightly better!
I had my photo shoot yesterday! It was good fun. Got to Rag the car like a stupid git, great fun. I wore the hat at all times so hopefully the logo will come out in some shots!
Not sure about the Tie bar point. ARe you making your own frame?
I dont think the others with the clubman front have had this issue but they do use metro running gear so they might not have come accross the prob.
I saw a van with a K in it at MITP and that had to do the same as us with a remote filter so it must be a common prob. He linked it in with having an oil filter!
Hope this helps, any more questions just ask

yeah il be making my own frame, managed to aquire a few jsut incase i mess up :) Yep now established all the gearboxes for 1.4 k's are physically the same size etc which is nice :)
Oil filte rthing stil bugs me as thats more money that i dont have :P
What did you do with the clutch?
Thanks again,
denis.

Sorry, yes the clutch.
Just converted to hydraulic.
You have to remove the arm from the gearbox, re drill the pi and mount the arm at a different angle. Then mounted mini slave cylinder onto arm!
Well if you are struggleing for the remote filter let my dad know, gtmKoupe, and he might be able to make one up for you for a fee, if he has time that is!

Thanks again :) i can visualise the clutch mechanism, seems pretty straight forward!
and il give you a shout with regards to teh filter. pretty much set on the k-series now :P jsut need to wait on a local MOT failure to come along at a decent price :)

Although the K does not produce as much power as some of the other engines I still think its a good engine to put in a mini.
Are you after a 1.4? What are your future plans for it?
Only the older engines with the metal intake manifolds can not be upgraded that much. If you go for one with a plastic manifold you can change the liners and pistons to larger ones at a later date if needed.
Good luck any way.

Just about to buy a donor car, buble shape 214 MPi 16v, 70k miles for £100 :) nice plastic manifold i think..
just waitin on the transporter(accident damaged tho engine stil runs fine!) and its mine :)
Thanks for ur help so far!

plan is to just get it running! lol 105BHP in a mini shud keep me happy for a wee while atleast.
then later start looking at bigger k-series units. as it shoud be very straight forward swap from a MPi 1.4 :)

FWIW while I was in Germany one of the lads showed me two K series engines. A 1.4 and a 1.8. His idea was to pass the German TUV or MOt with the 1.4, something about power or size problems and then swithch in the 1.8 after he gets certified. Reason: Engines look idendical on the outside and once swapped no one can tell the difference.
PicKup, Glad the hats are such a hit. I couldn't be more pleased how well they went over even for people that don't normally wear them. JS

Just a wee update, the car turned out to be a 416 ... the wifey advertising it realy didnt have a clue. bless.
anyways it has a hydraulic clutch :) which is nice. Gear linkage looks exceptionaly bulky though, compared to the metro setup :( but ill work around it. considering mounting the whole lot to the engine block(makeing it snug as possible) , and jsut haveing 2 rods comeign back a-la the mini setup..
Anyways another question..
if i mount the 400's clutch master cylinder internally (its a sealed unit so i cant fill it up anyways) and moved my brake master cylinder a smidgen to the left, could the engine be tilted back further?? this increasing room at the front and possibly raising the oil filter above they tie bar? asuming ofcource i do somethign with the gear linkage :)
a photo straight down onto the top of your engine around the manifold area would be greatly appreciated :)
Cheers,
denis.
I've got a metro engine/gearbox sitting, and the main problem with tilting the whole lot back, is the gearbox. On the metro box (not sure how it compares to the 400 box), the differential casing would stick down further.

i was refering to rotating it on an axis placed through the centre of the dif, if you get my meaning. such that the rocker cover sits perfectly horisontal. or near as damnit. basically i dont want the space between engine and bulkhead going to waste! thus engine would sit a tad higher over all, hopefuly geting me more clerance at the front, and for the oil filter :) il be experimenting with frames over the next few days when i have spare time.

I posted some info somewhere regarding rotating the engine.
http://www.16vminiclub.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1470&highlight=tilt
I looked into it when doing mine, but decided it was not worth the effort at the time. It could be a viable way of getting a bit more space, but bear in mind that as the head tips back, the alternator, starter motor and exhaust manifold come forward.

cheers geehawk, il hopefully get a frame cut up and offer the engien up to it tomorow at some point to get an idea of how it fits :) but if he options there i wouldnt mind tilting it back :)
