Best advice I can think of is to get a complete donor car that you know runs ! If you got for a Rover 114 GTI (MPI model) it should be the same 1400 k-series engine - you can then modify the rover front subframe to fit the mini - unless you're planning to buy a ready-to-go subframe ? Donor car would still be well advised even if you went that route - atleast you know you've got the correct ecu, loom etc etc

found a 214 whole car 350 quid. was just gonna buy that lol! but what modifications are needed to make it work? like in all seriousness how hard is it. i dont know exactly what im doin but like if someone tells me ill get it eventually lol
was also thinkin about puttin an 1800 bottom end and head on? any advice?

No idea what the rover 214 frame is like I'm afraid - as for how to do it - there's plenty of posts to read through to get you started   !

if you get a multi-point 214, i believe itas a pretty straight swap to drop in a compelte 1800. lots of info on various metro sites.
i dont believe the 214 has a frame as such(could be wrong) however im also considering useing one as a donour as MOT failures are £30-50 a pop :) theres one on e-bay for £5 just now! only thing that wories me is if the 214 uses the gearbox which is bigger than the box used on metros. watch my thread "fao picKup" iv asked just about everything i can think of :P
if your bodging the mini frame to fit the lump then the way its mounted in the 214 shouldnt really be an issue :)

as bassaddict says tho the multi point metro gti is the ideal donor, as it has the right box, and the right frame if you want to mod it.
ideally buya complete car so you can hear the engine running! only reason im considering the 214's is because tehre avaliable at much more "reasonable" cost.

Quick note on gearboxes.
All 1.4 engines metro/or use basically the same box. Ratios might vary a bit, and the bolted/bonded diff thing.
216 same box again slightly different flywheel IIRC
the 200 series gearboxes might have a different gear selector mechanism to the Metro, but I think that might just be the 1.6 version. Easy enough to deal with though.
the 1.8 is the one that uses a drastically different box, but even that can be made to fit.

excellent :)
Hi !
Apart from the ratios, the gearboxes on 214s and Metros are identical dimension-wise. Problems could arise with the gearchangemechanism. I found out after installing a 214 engine and box in a 114 gti. Cutting, grinding and welding in an enginebay with all components in place is not much fun. It all did work out well, though.
I could probably scan the wiring diagramms I´ve got and post them somewhere on this site.
Cheers,
Martin

whats the diference in the linkages? would it be possible to bolt the metro linkage to the 'box?

What you have to do is, cut off the 200 type selector from the box and weld on a metro type IIRC

Iv jsut de-syphered the engine loom multi-plug from my donor car, ahve the pin-out written down if you need it.
its a 1.6 16v Mpi k series, but i believe all the MPi looms are the same?!
