Yes it is and it cost £105 + £25 postege. i had to drill some holes in it to mount it to the heal board. i used M16!! bolts and put plate the other side of the heal board(inside the car) and tap the plate to suit M16. i then put a locking nut on the other side just to be sure there doent rattle loose. Its a exelent quality beam but just drilling holes in it was the down fall. no problem for me as i work in a machine shop.

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j1/abnaduk/16122007024.jpg
Getting on with the frame. To me where the lower parts mount the the tie bar parts doesnt really apeal to me as being strong. but seen it on other peoples frames so i guess it will be ok.
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j1/abnaduk/16122007022.jpg
Quick photo of the set up. will be cutting out the rest of the subby on tuesday, and looking into making up the mounts. i could really do with buying a crane :)

Remember, just because you've seen it on other peoples frames doesn't make it OK, if your not happy with it then change the setup till you are.
Progressing nicely though, keep it up.
umm.....out of interest why do you have a shed - in a shed???? just looks a bit strange to me. Fair play on the build though, just wish I could weld otherwise I would have made my own frame too.

17-12-2007, 07:36 PM
Indeed ill be making my own little modifications to it. such as making brackets out of one piece of metrail insted of bits welded together just to make it look neater.
The shed haha. welll.............. my parents are doing a barn conversion up the top from the big shed. so we have moved out and a renting another house and dont have room for the stuff so all out "loft" stuff is inside that shed. which is in the main shed. haha.

A tad more done today not much due to cuting and burning my finger making the engine mounting plates for the frame
Photos.... Cut out a bit more of the frame. just cutting angled pieces of the back. and awaiting my engine crane. its going pretty slow due to not being able to allgin the egnine up in the frame to show me what i got. but work will proceed

Another! update. will have a day off tomoro. have a little problem that i hope doesnt turn into a big one.
trail fitted it on the car today and......... it tilts... upwards. as you can see in this photo.
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j1/abnaduk/19122007038.jpg
Ive made sure the two locters on top of the towers have gone in each hole. and only really done the bolts up finger tight. could this be because there are surposed to be rubbers inbertween the tower and the bulk head? to give it a bit of flexability? this is proberly me just being stupid. well at least i hope it is!

The back clearing the floor pans by a good....... 60 - 70mm

Also cut around the towers and mounted the rear beam for the rear mounting point.

Just a thought but is that bar you put in across the bottom of the frame hitting the steering rack?
Aband

Nah i put the frame on the car and checked all clearences with the rack. hopefully when its not tilted up it wont hit it ether. if not its not to hard just to cut it off. made up all the brackets to mount to the lower bulk head so ill be working on this tomoro

First of all salveged a chain to use as a crain so i could finally get the egnine in the right place to start making my mounts. Now im off work things have come to a hault as i need to use the machines at work to mill off 10mm off the subframe mounting plates as with the rubber mounts, plate and engine mounting plate the engine still sits a tad to high. its only the block side that needs to come down as the engine is tilted once i get the egnine square on the block side it should be low enough (fingers crossed)
Photo of the chain! mounted to big wood roof beams not really a good idea as it keeps making thuding noices when the engine is being swung into the frame. But all is well.
O my welder also broke :x the nib broke off in the end when trying to get it out. so any welding work (which theres a fair amount of) wont proceed intill i get a new welder :(

not yet ordering the front end tomoro just to make sure it fits before i weld any of the mounts up. will be lowering the mounts by at least 15mm just to give me a tiny bit more clearence of the bonnet.
Will update more when i go back to work and when i resieve my parts to repair my welder :)

Had to take of 23mm!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! off my first mount to get the engine lower.
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j1/abnaduk/02012008063.jpg
As seen in photo. it went from 35mm down to 12mm. tapped a hole so i dont need a bolt for the rubber mounts. will also need to cut the end off the thread on on of the mounts so that it skrews all the way in. im hoping this is going to work i dont see why not.
Mounts ill be getting tomoro hopefully my welding gear to.
Also slotted my other bracket to get a bit of play just in case ive messured up wrong

Went out there today only spent a few hours as i had to fit a new water pump to my mates dads vaux v6.
Anyway............ Ground down the rear bar to clear the stearing rack. Welded up one of my mounting plates.
shifted the bar that covers the crank pully over and inch.
Cut back my rear mounting plates that mount to the crease on the floor pan to bulk head.
and cut out the box for the gear shift.

had a bad day today. thought the engine would be in in no time but fell into a few problems.
1. my engine is mounted to low! seriously you can fit a round nose under no problem without cutting and front away. it also hits the lower parts for the frame.
So my way to fix this without cutting anything off is......... to put 6mm packing to top of the rubber mounts the 6mm give me just enough!
2. Making the backet for the back is a pain in the ass. finally got all the messurements up for it then ended up welding my sloted plate to the wrong edge of the angle :(
made up my lower arm bolts today. going to make my own lower arms though. ive made the mounting points to suit a mini arm but its a bit tight. going to buy some rose joint ends and work something out. (they are called rose joints arnt they?)
If i listened to people, knowing how much work this frame involves i would of just brought one. finding it difficult at the moment. but hey. 2 mounting plates to do and its done. then a few modifications and it will be done.
Not many photos today dissapointed that i couldnt get the engine in today :(

ITS IN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ish
still need to do the other mounting point but i just used a wedge for now. have a few clearence issues.
1. oil filter hits the tie bar.
2. gear box side hits a little lip on the end of the box. hitting the other tie bar.
3. oil filter bolt at the back only just hits the little bolts that hold on the top arm plate.
im using packing under the mounts so that it gives me the tinyest more clearence on parts. ive made up some 2 1/2" round plate. 3 lots of 6mm and 3 lots of 3mm just to try and level it up and clear parts.
havent made the gear box mounting side yet but will raise it above the tie bar.
photos will show.

Finished all the mounts today. so the engine is now properly in.
Problems build up. Oil filter resting on the tie bar,but when this clears and the right mount takes the weight the sump will proberly hit it to.
When the drivers side wheel is on full lock. its about 10mm away from the crank pully. going to be making a smaller one to suit a tiny fan belt so hopefulyl it will be ok. also its not on its coilovers yet so might not be such a problem.
with all my real close clearences when the engine is moving and rocking around it could hit the frame in a few places. BUT! im oging to add another mount up the top on the tower i think to stop it rocking back.
phone died tonight so couldnt get many photos and alos broke the genorater so i had just a torch to work with tonight.

The land rover mounts are VERY stiff. Dont go too small with the crank pulley. pending on your alternator, you may be underdriving it.

Sorry for the boring updates not much really exciting going on.
Mounted the rear subframe mounts the the floor pans. i made some mounts similar to the mini type but made them out of 5mm plate and M12 studding.
Sorted out the engine and all clearence today its tight but it fits!. put some tube under the bump stops to get the oil filter etc off the tie bars and all it well i think... slight touching on the towers but only need bringing fowards a tad.

Welded in the box today to clear the gear linkege mechisum which went ok i guess.
got the front end of jason on here picked it up yesterday... so test fitted that today.
got a question about this dizzy im going to use. have a problem with it not fitting all the way in the dizzy slot. liek the pin on the end is to long for it to go all the way in. and next to it there is just a bit of plastic am i missing something?

Also my gear linkege sits to the drivers side. is it possible to cut the bent section out and weld it so the bar is just striaght or will this mess up how it selects gears?

Finally welded up my poorly press scuttle today. i say poorly pressed but its on there allright now due to me bending it to shape.
Also welded up the a panel. and the plates the front end will bolt on to.
Also this will be the colour ill be pianting it. will be painting it soon hopefully once i order some paint.
front end will need a bit of tweeking to meet the a panels but hopefully shouldnt be to bad.
Didnt get round to doing the gear selecter. will have to cut out my box i welded in to get the bar the rod fits into to face down as the box is stopping it from doing so. wont cut it all out just a small section.

Well had an attempt at the mani fold today. To be honist its not really my best work but i gave it a shot. its still no complete yet as i have to work out the gas volume for the next set of tubes i have to put on. also i need to just grind out the inside getting rid of whats left over that the mill couldnt get to with a drill and grinding wheel.
To get the 4 tubes in line with eachother i put it in a vice and tighten it up slowly while heating it up. once got the tubes where i wanted i then heated the whole lot up (apart from the flange, due to being cast iron)
Hopefully this wont restrict it to much .....

Volumes is not a problem. allready worked them outish. err the standard mani goes. 30mm x4 then 35mm x2 the 40 or 45mm x 1. my mate worked it out at 40mm x 2 then 60mm x 1 which is a bit extreme i might just go by want the standard one is. as its the same but all im doing is swaping which tube connects to which.

Nice radiator, i had one like that once :|
As for the driveshafts, i was putting that off for ages... but when i came to do it, it was nothing like as bad as i feared!
I started by cutting the shafts down, but leaving them so they were still overlength, then I just fitted the mini shaft in the hub, the vaux shaft in the g'box, held them together and marked across them both.
It was an absolute pain the arse to cut them though. So after i marked them, i just took them to a local engineering place and had them do the rest... oh and make sure they sleeve them (regardless of whether they think they'll be fine without sleeves   )

i am an engineer so its no problem make it so they slot together. make drill a 5mm hole through the two pieces put a bit of 5mm round through weld that in then sleve them. just to get a but more strenght. Shall get round to this once all the other jobs im doing are finished. im doing to many things at once i cant just do one. as i come across problems as im doing a job then sort that. then find something else. its a nightmare :P
All good fun though. This exhaust is also confusing the hell out of me.
Owen... if you read this i dont surpose you could blast the front end? as on the clubby front theres a few pitted bits of rust that make take a while with a grinder as ive tryed.
No problem chap. Is it big enough to put in your car? I can do it when you next come up if you want?

what a pain in the ass making an exhaust is! after hours of cutting sections of tube up. ive finally managed to make something up. this will only be temporary as to me this is a bodge. might restrict in some ways of the insides not being as smooth as they could be. anyway photos of something im nto so proud of........ should of made one from scratch.... need a tube bender...

Well i couldn't help my self working next to it while its sat there under a rag soooooo.... i desided to take the pully off the old mini engine. and the one off the vauxhall.
Im going to be making my pully one day this week if i get a chance after work. which i doubt it so it will probably be next week. but here goes.
Im using a mini altinater for now. so AM I RIGHT IN THINKING THAT IF I MAKE A PULLY THE SAME SIZE ETC AS THE MINI BUT MAKE IT FIT TO THE VAUXHALL CRANK IT WILL NOT OVER RIDE THE ALTINATER? also does it matter which way it spins?
thanks if someone reads this and helps :D

I'd think very carefully about making a pulley, the bolt holes are not symmetrical at all and you need to make sure its balanced too.
it doesn't matter which way the alternator spins either.

I spent days making a manifold for the c16se mini, then filled it with water and it was leaking right inside the y-piece  Have just started on Mk.2 having bought a selection of random manifolds to chop up - got a complete stainless manifold for a bike engined kit car for a tenner :)
I started from the manifold flange and worked my way down last time - gonna do it the opposite way round this time so I can make sure all the y-pieces are air-tight before they're inaccessible !!!

as for the pully ill be doing it on a lethe so everything will be set up true so it will be balenced anyway. and as for the holes. ive messure the dia of the holes at 57 so thats a 28.5 radious. puch that into a machine and it should be fine.

Looking at the grade of steel you have there, you'd be much better off arc welding it, particularly the fillets welds at the y piece. Tak it up and take it to a blacksmith/pipework fabricator. You'll generally find an industrial heating engineer or steel erector on any large scale building site (hospital, school, factory etc) with an arc plant and will weld it up for a tenner at lunchtime. Beer money Mmmmmmmmmm

hum. where i work we no a few other engineering shops like ours around. ive asked about tube forgeing before but havent had any luck finding one around here. in our industral estate theres alot of metal working shops so ill ask around there i guess but im sure there wont be anywhere that does the heat side of it. i can use the arc at work to weld it up. will see how it goes. im planing on just using this as a template for now. will make a complete new one at some stage.

Mini nut you were right on the not being simetrical radi on the holes. theres one that is 2mm down and 2mm to the left. so therefor that makes my drawing wrong :) also the holes are 8mm holes as the bolts i used were a size of 7.9mm.

One question...definitely on the 8v's the pulley seems to be the crank damper as well, is the 16v different? I can't imagine an alloy pulley is doing much for damping harmonic vibrations... :? ???

i cant place it there as my bars that go from the tower to the front are only 23mm off the cam cover so im limited to space without having to mod the tower to front bar. when i go to put it in that place the bolt just catches the cover and i dont reallywant to mod the cover just to get it to fit. the only other way of doing it is getting a smaller altinater and mounting on the front beside the exshaust.

The top hose on the top photo is just a breather.(its a we bit more complex than that if you are using forced air)
The bottom single hose on the lower photo is a fuel pipe the fuel pipe for the other two carbs is missing.
The three small hoses connecting between all four carbs are for water heating to stop carb freezing you can unscrew the four small screws holding the heaters in and remove an bin the lot.

although make sure your timing is right when you try to start it as they hurt if they fly out and hit you.

Just a quick Q.. Does your wheel/tyre catch at all on your R/H brace on lock my frame is a similar shape round that area but havnt got my susp built up yet. Just looks like it ll be a close call o my 1. Cheers

Nope all clears well. BUT!!! another reason i made my pully is so that the wheel didnt catch the standard one.... but still on full lock the wheel just catchs one of the bolts on the pully. so im hoping with deeper dish wheels it wont catch. if not ill have to work something out in terms of makeing the wheel not turn as much....

Can someone give me some guidence on how to wire up the ignition mod. coil and dizzy?
Am i right in thinking working back it goes. dizzy. which plugs into the inginton mod. then where does the ign mod go to? igniton? lol (sounds like a stupid one?
then the coil just wires into the mini coil section?

wired in my starter panel today works a treat got a battery to power it to :D so it now turns over and it sounds great :D
TODAYS WIRING QUESTIONS ARE:
Few photos i need to no which wires go where only ones for the ignition mod and the coil and dizzy.
First question..... does the crank senser need to be wired into the igniton mod? and the from the igniton mod to the coil? then to ignition.
and just a basic altinater question on the mini loom theres a fat midium and thin wires, and the same on the denso altinater. do i just match these wires for it to work the same?
Left over ign mod wires......... 4 of them
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j1/abnaduk/22052008245.jpg
Coil wires, which side goes to ignition which side goes to module?
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j1/abnaduk/22052008246.jpg
Fat and thins for altinater just to conferm before i wire it in.

crank sensor has absolutely nout to do with any of it if you've got dizzy and carbs. Cant help you on the other stuff right now as i'm just about to leave for work, but i'll have a gander when i get back. I'll have a close look at some of the pics of my car when i was on carbs, and see if i can see how it was wired :)

Just thought I would post on here as well as I have been trying to help Adam with the wiring as well.
I took some part numbers from the ignition module an did some searching about it on the internet, and came across this (http://www.volvoracing.se/Volvo%20Info/Bosch/Ignition%20Modules.pdf) pdf which states that this particular module ( part no. : 0 227 100 200 ) is controled by ECU signal. I also found a pdf from the Motec website (http://www.motec.com.au/drawings/M29%20Dual%20Bosch%20Module%200227%20100%20200.pdf ) which shows that this perticular module controls twin coils (or a twin bank wasted spark coil pack, like it was originally on the calibra).
I'm guessing either this module is no use, or that you can replicate the ECU signal in another way which is suitable? Seeing as how it produces a twin signal, will it still work with a single coil only?
Cheers for the info.

coil over problem..... as seen in photo. the shock is on a slight angle. and the lower spring adjuster at the bottom of the sping catches one of the bracket mounting bolts.
Anyone got any sugestions? im aware people are using heavyer springs but that might slove the catching problem but not the angled one.
Im probably doing something stupid that i havent noticed yet. like the coil to top arm mounting bracket, can that go ether way up or only one way?
Cheers

Its pretty much justtttt resting on the bump stop

as the other guys have said, i think you should try the bracket the other way up. in that picture, it looks like its sitting on top of the ball joint nut, mine (which were made by mighty_mallot) and all the others i've seen have the top of the ball joint go through it, and the it sits flush on the top arm with the ball joint nut bolted down on it.

HA so it is! never noitced the lock washer :P never mind.
Fliped the bracket over tonight . doesnt really sit on the bolt anymore but its now resting on the bumpstop a bit more........... im guessing thats where the heavyer springs come in. although all tie bar clearences are fine but closish.
And the lower bracket sucks. it has a 11mm clearence for one of the bolt and a 13mm clearence on the other side. but both bolts are m10 so whats the point in the 13mm?
..... there on now will just buy the other springs if thats the case. oh and the balljoint side of the bracket there is a 12mm hole slightly offset
cheers guys :)
EDIT: ahaha think i no what im doing wrong now, i can see.... but that offset hole will need to be drilled bigger and in the centre...

yeah ill defently buy another one after this. as if i had an air filter on all the fuel would of collected in that and it would of been a lot worse.
Cleared most of the dust out the carbs yesterday just need to open them up and clean inside. should have it going again monday.
Got a cage now and the cv joint i need so ill be rolling this week :).
But on the carb problem. im guessing this jet the spits the fuel out the other end is an float bowl over flow? Does anyone no if i can block it off to prevent this happening again?

27-07-2008, 12:42 PM
how well was it running? other than the spitting fuel issue.
Are they definately plumbed right? when i plumbed mine wrong on the polo, they were spewing fuel from the air filter side of things like no tomorrow, but it did run (but pretty poorly).
It turns out that i had plumbed into a float bowl vent or something. I just stuck it on the right pipe and all was sorted.
If it was an overflow, where would it be going on the bike
Aband
27-07-2008, 07:13 PM
er not sure if i have it plumbed in right i guess i have, it does run rough but thats due to the timing i might have it plumbed in wrong as cylinders 3 and 4 as you look at them run really hot and 1 and 2 run "warm" but i think thats down to the timing. im running mega jolt on a xe on carbs map but thats a different matter.
as you said it jets outs like no tomorrow only when the car is not running and the fuel pump is turn on. but as soon as i turns it over its fine....
XEValver
27-07-2008, 09:02 PM
hmm that sounds very similar to how my polo was...
when not running and fuel pump on, it would pour out, but if you started it, it would be ok. but it wouldn't rev at all but i think that was down to wrong distributor in the end.
definately find out if you've got them plumbed right next!
Aband
27-07-2008, 09:10 PM
yeah i can only just rev it then when i get to like 2.5k - 3k it starts spitting flames. im sure its down to timing but ill have a play about tomorrow and get it going again. cheers joel

Made a quick gaurd tonight. standard 12 x 5" wheels hit the pull on full left lock so for now ive made this gaurd to protect the senser from getting coated in shiz. when i get wider wheels the tyre hopefully shouldnt hit it. annddd its pretty solid where it is but it needs another mounting point on the other side as if the wheel does hit it it will be pushed right into the trigger wheel.........
Also made a tentioner for the V pully belt as when on full strech, the altinater hits the front end.
andddddddd might be in need of an even smaller oil filter. something like 40mm or............ spend 70 to 100 odd quid on remote :( also need pipe work for the cooler.
QUESTION? WOULD USING A 40MM OIL FILTER BE OK TO USE AS ITS RATTTEEEE SMALL COMPAIRED TO THE ORIGINAL 70MM or 60MM ONE.

finally spend a we bit of money on it buying a remtore oil filter. i can now plumb my oil cooler through that rather than using the cooler plate. sooo i can now mount it higher up as even with the remote filter it ride quite close to the tie bars. so ill be making a new filter bolt as the one i have is spaced. so hopefully this will now get rid of my annoying brake line problem and i can finally start it up again!
if anyone knows the thread size for a suburu oil cooler that would be great :P!

No, remote housings take the inlet and outlet for the oil filter with an adapter plate and supply the remote housing with pipes from the adapter plate.

Been 2 years since i last posted on this thread!!! Since then the kit car has been built but not road tested its turning into abit of a track car rather than a road gooer. But since this photo was taken all the wheels are orange to match the roll hoop colour.
Also for any of you that might be intrested in MGB's i kind of got bored of the sluggish 1800 B engine so decided to spice it up abit with the use of the Zetec engine :) sadly it IS NOT!! a duratec.... though it should be and one day will be ha! but im sure this engine is good enough for it at the moment. The reason for the project is that the car when i brought it was once a project just thrown back together so everything was abit tatty so i decided to tear it apart and put everything back to normal. But then things got alittle out of hand and i found some intresting stuff online about some of these cars. Intresting things such as better suspention.... so i decided to make all of my own 4link suspention on the arse end getting rid of the leaf springs and putting coilovers all round. I also slightly made my own front suspention with the help *cough* (copy) of a set up thats already been made. Then!!!! this led to seeing a Sebring style mgb which is the much wider version so ended up buying all fibre glass wide arch panels for it and thats the stage im at now. Enough with the talking im sure no one will actualy bother reading all this ramble anyway so here goes.........................

Some more photos and a question..........
Does anyone know where to buy hose protection? the spring/coil type that you slide over the hose had a look at a few places and on google and just cant seem to find anyone who sells it. have one last place to look which i will try in a bit. The photo below will probably explain why i need it.
Had a big gearbox issue since i last posted on here. brought the gearbox off ebay ages ago and as ive only reallygot the car running recently turns out the input shaft bearing went...... then when trying to get it out. one of the rings that hold the slide pins in one of the sycros fell out......... going to the bottom of the gearbox. sooooo totally spripped it down and rebuilt it.... now it runs with no problems just needs jetting. ALMOST back on the road.............

Thanks guys, Makes me laugh when the older generation say rrrrrrrr but your ruining a classic. THERE 1000'sssssss of mgbs around and parts are just as cheap as mini parts so its not as if there dying out really. Plus the wide arches are all designed from the Sebring racing MGB they use. so its not really getting rid of the classic"ness of it. So yeah sorry for the moan. Ive brought some paint for it now to. Just need to sort the money spending on it being the insurence tax and mot. Will post final photos sooonnnnn
Been reading bits at a time on your build diary Adam, as mentioned already its nice to see something a bit different from the norm, good work
If your still stuck on protection for those hoses then if I'm thinking of the right thing then try here
