My mini being a D-reg doesn't have a catalytic converter, the k series obviously does - keep it or bin it? How does this effect the MoT? Will it be tested by D reg mini standards or K reg rover standards?

I'm not too up on rover engines but some marques put sensors on before and after the cat to monitor emissions/engine performance and adjust fuelling accordingly (boo). I'm geussing this isn't the case with Rover?

Well yes it is on the later type ones, mems 3 but not on this enigne.

However if you dont connect it up it still works, only dont connect up the engine warning light in the dash or I am sure this will be on all the time!

I have not got it connected up at the min on mine and the mpg is the same as the mg zr we have with an idential engine ( but different gear ratio)

if it is a case of the engine management light coming on i geuss your ecu may well switch to 'safe mode' and you might not be getting peak performance from the engine. i know this was the case some m8s had with their zetec s's, the later cars had a sensor after the cat and unless the ecu was reprogrammed they got sh!te performance if the sensor wasnt doing what it should.

alternative is to find out what signal it gives out and falsify it, but thats too deep into electronics for me

Bin it.

The MOT tester should test the car emissions based on whichever is older, engine or car. So unless there is something seriously wrong, it should fly through.

That is a posibility, but there are also other sensors that we have missed off
Like the rough road sensor, one abs sensor designed to prevent missfires when going on a rough road. Not quite sure how it does it or if its needed but we just sodded that one off straight away!

To be honest the car goes very well at the minute and I do not think it is in a safe mode. I know the pickup is a lot lighter then the ZR but it deffinatly goes a lot quicker on the acceleration then it. She revs nice and easy to 7000 without thinking about it!

Also we had talked to some people on the GTM forums who use these engines in the latest kits and thay mess off these sensors!

heres a neat trick as used by alot of the saxo boys (the proper car enthusiast type, not burbery wearign twats :P ) if you put the second lambda in an insulated box (it gets hot) and just tuck it out the way somewhere the ECU wil jsut assume that the emissions are sparkly clean after the cat, thus keeping the ECU out of limp home mode :)
