when working on my son's (colinh7) 3 cyl turbo sprint mini I inadvertently hooked up the battery backwards (positive to ground and ground to positive), there are no gauges or radio in the car yet, now fuel pump works but car will not turn over. Any ideas on where to start checking for anything blown(or melted)

It is EFI isnt it? It could be a damaged ecu, but if the fuel pump is triggered you might be ok, not sure if fuses would go as it didn't short, but i guess one may have been overloaded??
I would hook up the dials and see if the check engine light comes on, (it does have one doesnt it   and check for a fault code.

Ed, absolutely nothing hooked up no idiot lights, gauges(only oil pressure) there is actually no dash yet.
Kev here you go http://www.16vminiclub.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=7732

We actually got the car like this

Surely if it was more than a fuse, you would have smelt it burning? And something must have gone or moved for the pump to stop working!

I would suggest as a starting point check and clean every earth point that you can find?

From there i would start to check wires for continuity. You could have a quick look inside the ecu case. But i should think it would stink if its toasted.

It could have burnt out just one component or even a track, would still smell but not that bad. :?

would it be easier to pull the ecu first and check it?

pulled the ecu and opened it up no smell no tracking nothing that looks out of the ordinary

is it possible it burnt the wire off the solenoid

Which solenoid are you on about?

Does anything electrical work to do with the engine? or car?
Any relays to do with the engine?

I have to say though i am not familiar with the T3 wiring.
May have to look on www.Teamswift.net

Maybe a silly question but is the battery still ok. by any chance do you have a standard mini fuse block, if yes then I would seriously scrap it. They corrode and cause problems.

battery is still ok and it is the sprint fuse block( I think)

and I was thinking the starter solenoid.

I just remembered I took a ground off when i removed the dogbone mount to replace it and haven't replaced it yet so perhaps I should look at that first

I stll thinks its worth removing all earths and cleaning them!! Even if its just for peace of mind. Will help reliability.

I will be sure to, too hot today to do anything it's about 90 degrees outside today

got her running again, it was a fusible link. It took a long time to start and now it won't start again but the good news is I have fuel to the injectors but a very weak and intermittent spark, changed the plugs still the same I guess I could have buggered up the coil or the ignitor, will have to check them and see.

have you checked the alternator yet as the diodes are the first thing to blow shorting the system out

I did similar on mine a few years back, the new battery was almost identical to the old except that the terminals were reversed so when i connected it up there was a shower of sparks :!:

The only thing that went on mine was the ignition amplifier in the ECU, you couldn't see any damage but it wouldn't fire up. Quick run to a specialist repairer who told me exactly what it was within minutes. Was repairable, cost £60 I think.

Might be worth a try.
