Hello everyone, im new on here.
:D
I have recently bought a swift gti engine and all the bits needed to put it into my mini. I am not starting the project for a month or two though as I have to finish anouther one first.

I will no doubt be on here for advice etc later on.

I was just wondering what kind of perfomance I can expect to get out of the std engine in my mini?

thx

The standard GTi engine produces around 100-105Hp. The Cultis engine produces about 10Hp more. In my opinion thats about as much as a well worked Cooper S engine. There is a small weight savings as well as the GTi engine is all alloy.

The most noticible thing about the standard engine is the fantastic torque at low rpm. Remember this engine is acustomed to pulling a car about 200-300Kg heavier. As far as performance goes imagine a standard GTi doing low 16 sec 1/4 mile and then remove a few hundred Kg. Not bad.

The next thing I noticed was the fuel economy. A while back I went on a long weekend club run which covered about 700Klm (435 miles). I did that with a 35litre (7.5gal) fuel load and had some to spare at the end. Hot Cooper S's filled up half way during the weekend as did the standard minis with single 25l tanks.

So its a good conservative swap but will not have the performace of the Honda or Vauxhall engines. However, does takes to performance mods very well and can produce up to 140hp in non turbo and easily over 200hp with a turbo. I have seen these engines producing in excess of 300Hp http://www.speedoptions.com/features/cars.php?carID=84

Hope that gives you some idea.

:D thx

What is the 0-60 time?

Will I have to have the driveshafts made and balenced at an engineering firm or can I cut and weald the mini and suzuki driveshafts together with a slieve over them?

0-60 with my Turbo Gti-Mini is around 4.5 but traction is nightmare as you can imagine.

I don't have 0-60 on the standard engine in my car yet. The Swift GTi did around 8.2 so I'll guess it will be somewhere in the high 6's due to the weight reduction.

I wouldn't recommend you cut and weld the drive shafts. I've seen too many fail done like that, but then again I've seen a some that work too. I had mine custom made, expensive, but that's one thing I don't have to worry about.

How much will i expect to have to pay to get the driveshafts custom made, if you dont mind me asking?

Braces himself for a big shock :o

If I had them made for you in Australia they would cost about GBP300 for the set. You should talk to local engineering shops and get a price from them as I don't know how we compare.

Quaife make the driveshafts for the Watson Vtec conversions, you could try there: http://www.quaife.co.uk

I got in touch with company in Luton.
They made drive shaft for Granada scorpio 4WD mini, if any of you remember.
They said, they can make anything and every thing.
For Suzuki and Mini drive shaft, £140+vat each.
I contact them and got a price for my project.

That'll be Reco-Prop then? (One of my CCTV customers) Good company, they made a prop for one of my Ford Pop hot rods years ago too, and it still works fine 10 years on

They work from a very small unit, and its a bugger to get to off the motorway at Luton airport junction.

any chance of FAQ'ing this or something? so that people who are doing self builds can get decent shafts? as i doubt my welding would be up to the job if/when i go down this route :)

Hi,

Yes it is reco-prop, I spoke to.
I saw their name in Retro and I thought, I better call them.
He sounded very good.
He did sound very much like person knows what he is talking about.
I will go with him when my project near to finish.
Until then, I shall cut and weld my subframe.
