Hi all,

Has anyone had trouble going from 2nd to 3rd?

I've not really driven the car super hard apart from the track day, and have never crunched the gears, but if I change from 2nd to 3rd in high revs (i.e. vtec), unless I wait for the revs to drop below about 4500rpm, I will hear a "crunch noise"

Has anyone experienced this?

Are B16a Gearboxes renound for being weak?

Or is this a common problem that everyone accepts and gets on with?

Don't wanna buy a new box, can't afford one!!!!

That sounds like the synchromesh has gone. i think this is a common problem with the gearboxes. Mine needs a 3rd gear synchro and i saw one for sale the other day which needed a 5th gear synchro.

try changing the gearbox oil this sometimes helps with cruchy gearboxes

The Honda cable gearboxes will go over time. Silly high revs and hard shifting I guess.
Use Honda MTF spec oil in them, its expensive but it seems to make a difference.

The Land Rover MTF-94 is supposed to be the same spec and it has done a good job with my really nasty 2nd-3rd crunch, but it can still appear and Im going to try the Honda stuff next time.
Honda actually reccommend the normal oil that you'd put into the engine, but then they do sell MTF and also strangely enough, gearbox synchros

Alternatively, it's a good chance to master the double de-clutch

I switched to the Honda MTF as well and it make the shifting a lot smoother. It was reccommended by the Honda Parts guy who also does engine swaps and races the Hondas.
