View Full Version : Build dilemma

In the US, post 98 Suzuki vehicles were offered w/ a SOHC 16v head and were rated for around 80hp. It has mechanical lifters, a fairly odd rocker arm setup and a narrow valve angle. Some parts for these are a bit difficult to come by. From my information, it is quite a bit narrower and lighter and has 1mm larger intake valves than the Swift GTI head. I am told that with the right cam they can be about equal in power output w/ the GTI's wider valve angle giving it a slight edge over the 1mm extra in the valve size.

I have one of these that needs a fair amount of reconditioning as well as a cam to bring it up to GTI power levels.
I can also obtain a DOHC head off of a GTI for my build, but that will also need some(tho much less) reconditioning.
Approximately, the end cost would be the same as would power. I have one, the other would probably be less work.
One would be an experiment, the other has been done many times.
One has is smaller and lighter, the other has easier to obtain parts.

I hate decisions like this. What do you guys think?

thats just it its a dilemma, no answer will be right or wrong! I was in a similar situation with my block!

it needed a lot of reconditioning! and its a 1.4!

do i buy new 1.4 engine (head mint condition) recondition old one

I looked for new block and found a super super cheap new 1.8 block on ebay!!

Its a tough one! myself i'd go dohc!

I think i would depend on your tuning preferences later on.
You know your going to want more power!!
So i should think the DOHC head.

The SOHC may flow better in stock form, but when it comes to tuning i think the DOHC will win. (but then im just biased)

I´m with ed4ran, go dohc, then the sky is the rev limit…:P

Hi,

If I recall correctly, there are 2 cam profiles for SOHC.
For DOHC, there are sooo many it works.
G13B will produce 180-200BHP with port and new cam with NA.
SOHC won't.

So there!

Mike from 3-tech has 3 or 4 different profiles, I believe.
What are you planning on revving to to get 200bhp? The GSXR1300 motor at doesn't make 175hp until 9800rpm and that motor is designed to make maximum hp...
In any case, there's no way to get that much power to the ground really. I'm only shooting for 115hp and a good bit of driveability and reliability.

Arent the SOHC heads prone to cracking as well? :|

mrbell,

G13B in Oz land has that power, I have been speaking with Ozmidnight.
I will have 130-140Bhp ish for my Mini but I have LSD to cope with...

I just want reliable power with 5 speed gearbox which I can't acheive with A-series.

Cheers

I have not heard of any cracking problems w/ the SOHC. At least not the 16v SOHC. I haven't done any research on the much more common 8v SOHC heads...

Atchi,
That's exactly my goal: reliable power and 5 gears.
