This is my brothers car that we are sticking a Swift engine in the front.

Today we finally started the conversion that has been planned for some time,
(my brother finally got enough time off to do it)

Car is originally an SPI so it already has the fuel lines and injection tank (we will be replacing the pump though)

The plan is to fit a Swift GTI engine into a standard front end, the engine will be standard for now.

Frame has already been made to an extent that the engine can fit in it, but it still needs welding and engine mounts etc need making.

Today we stripped the front and fitted the frame ready to sit the engine in and make the mounts.
We took the old front off in 1 piece so we can use it to make sure the engine fits under the standard front.

Put the car in the garage ready to start the cutting:
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/gary.heritage1/Pics/jim/swift/01.JPG

Front end cut off:
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/gary.heritage1/Pics/jim/swift/02.JPG

Front end with parts removed:
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/gary.heritage1/Pics/jim/swift/03.JPG

Subframe and engine removed complete:
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/gary.heritage1/Pics/jim/swift/04.JPG

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/gary.heritage1/Pics/jim/swift/05.JPG

New frame bolted on:
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/gary.heritage1/Pics/jim/swift/06.JPG

Slight clearance problem with the nuts for the RHD accelerator pedal:
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/gary.heritage1/Pics/jim/swift/07.JPG

Tomorrow we will have the frame fitting better (removing the nuts)
and remove some other bits off the bulkhead, and sit the engine in place.

Today's update:

We corrected the clearance problem with the nuts on the bulkhead (see he does do some of it):
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/gary.heritage1/Pics/jim/swift/12.JPG

Then we proceeded to test fit the engine (yes i know its not that level, but we are working around any clearance problems first):
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/gary.heritage1/Pics/jim/swift/08.JPG

Heres the main problem (inlet manifold hitting the bulkhead), this will be easy to fix:
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/gary.heritage1/Pics/jim/swift/09.JPG

Then we took the suspension bits off the old subframe and attached one side to the frame on the car:
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/gary.heritage1/Pics/jim/swift/10.JPG

After seeing how much space we have from the tie rod we are going to move the bottom part of the frame out a bit more to give the sump more clearance:
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/gary.heritage1/Pics/jim/swift/11.JPG

Tomorrow we will modify the frame then weld it some more to give it more strength.
Then we will put the engine back in and probably the suspension on both sides so it can sit on its wheels again. :D

Hi,

Is it mk1 or mk2 Gti engine?
You are lucky you can work on your car....I wish, I could :( .
May be next year, I will be starting again.
When you have house to deal with before I re-build garage.....

Oh... well, at least I can say, I have done it my way, like everyone else!

Cheers

Its a MK2 engine (1990)

Next year  2008? Dam

Re-build garage? as in brick by brick?
Suppose you could always add stuff to help with working on the car, like a pit. :D

like a pit.

surely that would be 'taking stuff away'
honestly i dont know where i'd be if i didn't have a pit!

Hi,

Unfortunately, house I'm buying has garage partly converted to utility room. Hence, I need to convert(rebuild) a garage, I might extend as well.

Also, I just got my offer accepted that's why 2008, if I'm lucky.

I know it doesn't look like we've done much today, but we have changed a few things.

The solid subframe mounts turned up today :D so we fitted those after doing a 2 slight alterations to the frame for a little more clearance.
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/gary.heritage1/Pics/jim/swift/13.JPG

We then fitted the frame with the new mounts and then set the engine in and got it to where it should end up.

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/gary.heritage1/Pics/jim/swift/15.JPG

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/gary.heritage1/Pics/jim/swift/16.JPG

We are going to order some new engine mounts and some metal to make the brackets for the mounts hopefully they should turn up by the weekend so we can start doing the mounts.
When this is done we will be welding the frame so the engine can sit in it, and it can sit on the suspension :D

Couldn't do a huge amount today,
so we put the manifolds on and have worked out how we are going to do the mounts,
we ordered some metal so when that turns up we can crack on with the mounts (hopefully tomorrow).

Still waiting for metal but now that will be mon/tue,
so we have to busy ourselves with starting on the other bits that dont require the engine to be fixed in place.

So today we mounted the radiator and started to do the clutch cable (just needs some holes drilling).
Also we have been thinking about a few other bits and planning on what to do with them, ready for when we get around to doing them.

We have pretty much got the mounts mocked up, but we changed the rubber mounts we originally intended to use for bobbin style ones.
So we made wood ones temporarily, rubber ones should turn up tomorrow, along with some other bits. :D

I have found the bobbin style mounts far easier to work with than the round style, mine came from a cortina i think.

Have you came up with a plan for the master cylinder or will the original pass.

Originally this car had a servo, so thats not going back on, but i happen to have the yellow tag type master off my car as i removed it (which has been rebuilt and repainted) and that should be fine :D

ed4ran
12-01-2007, 09:13 PM
Today we finished positioning the rear mount and have now removed the engine. Tomorrow if we have time we will be cutting and trimming and then welding the frame up.
After that the first thing to be done after the engine is sat back in is the do the gear linkage follow by the exhaust.
So then we can put the suspension on and not worry about getting under it.
Then we have driveshafts, electrics, and coolant pipes :D not much left

Had a problem with the welder, the trigger has been sticking and then today without the trigger sticking it was constantly on!! (wire squirting out)
so we took the side off and the relay had stuck, so a quick flick and it released and has been ok since.

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/gary.heritage1/Pics/jim/swift/26.JPG

Heres the frame bolted back on the car,
with the mounts in, and with the suspension back on,
so now its sitting on all 4 wheels again.

We still have some welding to do on the engine mounts,
but once thats done we can stick the engine in and start on the other bits.

Well we started welding the mounts up and we were ok for a bit then the welder started to go funny so we let it cool,
when we came back it was ok again and we got the mounts welded.
Once they were cool enough we started bolting them on to the engine only to find the new bolts we got were about 5mm too long so we had to chop them all down.

Once we had them bolted on we lifted the engine into the frame and proceeded to giggle it about (for quite some time) until finally it all fell into place after removing and re-attching the mounts in a certain order :(

We were then able to test the head, exhaust and inlet.

Now we can get on with the gear change, and exhaust.

Over the last 2 days we have gotten the gear change working and the exhaust fitted (both still need welding), and have got the clutch cable working but it still requires some adjusting.

Also looked at the MPH/RPM with the 13" wheels on the mk2 gti box :D
Doesnt look too bad for daily driving!!

Here are some quick pics of the exhaust extention,
we have hit a problem with the exhaust manifold though :(

We have also welded the gearchange which has now been cleaned and painted ready for the final install.

Tomorrow we will be starting on the driveshafts.

2 Days ago we sorted the alternator position and got one of the driveshafts cut.
Yesterday we got the other driveshaft cut but havent welded them yet.

Today we are finishing some bits on the frame before we strip it and send it to be shot blasted and then we paint it and reassemble. :D

We decided to move the rad to the front, which also gave more room over the gearbox (move the bar which went over the top) making it easier to get the engine into the frame.

Once the rest of the welding was done we sent it to be shot blasted and as soon as it came back we painted it with red oxide primer.

Once we have everything painted and have sprayed the bulkhead with underbody sealer it can start to go back together.

The inner wings will get the underseal to. And the same for under the front end when we get it. The inner wings have had a blast with a wire wheel on the grinder, then a rust converter brushed on top. This will all get sorted when we get to the A panels. When we add a strip of metal for the front end.

It looks better, when you are in front of it. The pic really doesn't do it justice. Having a scoop on the bonnet, can let a bit of water in. Its all just to prevent rust and rubbish, from eating at the body. And when we get the red frame in, it will look good to

Right well after a my girlfriends birthday party over the weekend. Ed and i got back to work on the car. So as things stand

DONE

Gear stick and change mechanism in place.
Timing belt on.
Alternator belt on.
Head gasket and head bolted on.
Refurbished the starter motor new paint.

DOING

Brace bars
Water pipes are being refurbished, need a little weld in places.
Cam cover is off to get shot blasted and the powder coated.
Exhaust manifold is going to get shot blasted.
Bung for WBL needs welding into exhaust (then exhaust system can go on.)
Air intake manifold needs to be made.
Electrics
Front end body work.
Oil filter, put oil in engine and gear box.
Fuel filter
Fuel pump

Then we should be starting the engine?

Pandora
21-02-2007, 07:35 PM
Well today we have been doing the small things. Brackets for the brake lines in the front. Pedals back in. We also received the wide band lamda sensor today, that will be welded into tomorrow. Exhaust manifold is now at the shot blasters, so is the rocker cover.

One of the reasons i gave up on bike carbs was because i didn't like the 40 degree angle of flow into the head.

If you go same route as miniswift and modify the ports for a better flow it will be good.

Hi ed4ran,

You should grind and smoothed but before you painted!
I have been told that std cast iron manifold is one of most efficient manifold Bill Falkner(Swift expert) have seen.
Also, I'm thinking of smooth it then lap it with heatshield to keep heat in.
I have ben told that it helps performance somewhat...

Great to see you boys are working hard on your cars...
I wish I could, but work is very busy and house purchase will be complete soon, then all of the DIY hell will start!

But when I finish house, then I can start work on my car again.

I think its actually louder than mine the camera doesnt seem to pick up all the sound!! Especially the loud noises!!
He's only got the one back box and its straight through were as mine has 2 boxes and 2 90degree bends. But hopefully will be changing it when i get a new manifold

A lad from down the road, has been over to see what we have been doing. You see him on the video rubbing his hands. He thought that we had a bike in the garage lol. It is louder than eds but i didnt want to floor it as its not properly set up. But we will have RR vids when it happens.

Well we had a problem getting things ordered, to finish the car. Hopefully they will come tomorrow. Changed the dizzy cap and arm, and made a new ground for the engine, sounds even better. Still not to sure on why the two center exhaust pipes are heating up quicker than the outer two. More to come.

Well ed found the running problem, it was half of the injector driving circuit, its not failed, but its a bit dodgy so he's switched to running all injectors off the one good driver. So my god it drives like WOW and it sounds supercharged. It feels quick really quick, and it was only £40 on top of my insurence. Cant wait to have it completely finished, painted.

Well we got it on the road on friday. Under the old mot the guys at the garage said it was fine, but sills might need some attention. We are having problems with brakes binding they got really hot. So ed is going to have a look at them tomorrow, i would love to help but i am working. But ed said he saw flames down the exhaust  which was funny to hear about. I just have the biggest grin on my face everytime i drive it.

Can we have some pics of the manifold setup? or is it a foran top secret :D

ed4ran
15-06-2007, 10:43 AM
Its not really a top secret, basically cut down a standard manifold and added tubing to hold the throttle bodies. 8)

Swiftmini
15-06-2007, 11:52 AM
Did you mount the carbs at an angle like i did with the gixxer carbs?

I gave up with mine because i was worried about gas flow not liking the corners, but it doesn't appear to be a problem on yours 8)

I wonder wether gixxer throttle bodies will fit my manifold :D

ed4ran
15-06-2007, 02:12 PM
I think you have less problems with throttle bodies if you keep the stock injectors in the head, then you only have to worry about the air going in.

It sounds like a mini supercharger its great, plus it sounds like i have SC/CR gears, lol. One thing i would say is that if you do throttle bods beware that you cant just plant your foot on the floor, or it will struggle. It feels great driving to. Very responsive on the accelerator. You'll have to learn how to drive again  just to get used to everything. I will get the cams and head work too. I'll get the ones from america if they are still available :D

4000 rpm = 70bhp
4600: 82bhp
5000: 98bhp
5500: 104bhp
6000: 108bhp
6700: 114bhp
7000: 112bhp

I want some of the teamswift ones but i'm skint at the present time. Will be better off soon though hopefully.

I can't remember exactly but it was between £10-20 i'm think.

Honestly the throttle bods are worth it. Sounds like you're hiding a super charger under the bonnet. With the mini 1.75in exhaust it sounds brilliant.

Currently having problems with the new calipers,
the original ones work, but when you swap the new ones on they are spongy, even after loads of bleeding, thats about 3 pedal pumps to build up the pressure.

We think its down to the capliers having some air stuck in them, but is difficult to get it out, we have tried the eezibleed a couple of times, as well as the one way valve pipes with pumping the pedal.

Now im probably going to get a vacuum one that works off the air compressor. Also going to get a standard mini brake pedal rather that the modified servo one that is on there. :?

Getting much done on yours? (yes i know you're away at uni).

Ed.

James' is being annoying with the brakes, but got a few things to try, then im trying to get a load done as when i move to Newcastle-U-L (stoke) i wont have access to a garage nor will i have many tools :(

But i have got a bigger memory stick for the camera (dont have a camcorder yet) so I can at least get a reasonable amount of video when i get round to it.

Ill try and get one towards the end of next week, but Ive got a lot to get done before i move :?

Not having much luck lately with mine, 4 pots wont work on the car even tho the mini calipers do? Drove the car to my girlfriends got there turned it off, then back on got to the end of the drive, and died, first it struggled to work then idled, any hint of acceleration it would die. Since then it wouldn't even start or idle. Now we have taken the chip out up dated that. loaded new software, Thats going to go in sometime soon, when ed can get his laptop up here. Been like that for about a month now. Have now idea what it could be? It ran fine going there, and stopping and starting at traffic lights. Completely lost.
