.Just mainly been making room for it whilst still trying to keep the tiebar mounts exactly where the belong. http://img356.imageshack.us/img356/1069/dsc00169wf2.jpg

http://img373.imageshack.us/img373/3188/dsc00168ec1.jpg

Gonna start making the side mounts tomorrow.

Then remake the the gearbox lower side to match the engine side.

Also got to make a removable front bar.
http://img185.imageshack.us/img185/9010/dsc00170ue6.jpg

The front bar is only tempory for now with only small welds holding it together.

Looking good. You will have to keep us updated with it man.

If you fancy earning yourself some extra $$$ in the future, Im going to be after one shortly.

Is this one you are making going to keep the same track as a standard mini? Or a wider wheel base?

mate, bolt the oil filter housign on, it wants to sit exactly where the OSF tie bar mnount is and it will have a big effect on engine position unless you remote mount the filter as some have done.

peskett
10-12-2006, 10:17 PM
its going to be standard track with all standard suspention. I got rid of my other k series mini as i wanted 10" wheels and that was based on a metro frame. If your after a frame have a look on the 16vminishop website as he's just starting to develop one. Only reason i'm doing my own is cos i want it for the riviera run in may. so cant hang around. Or have a go yourself. This is my first try at fabrication.

will be going the remote filter route even thinking of running the oil lines through the subframe.

I did see the K-series Conversion on the 16vmini shop, I wasnt too sure if it kept the same track as a standard mini though.

I do have a MIG welder in me garage, Ive just never had time to sit and learn. I can weld forever on the Oxy/Acc at work! But I dont fancy having a front subframe welded together with Pidgeon Shit!

Just give it a go!!!!!!!!! will save you a ton of money in the long run :D

Defo decided on the remote ages ago and as im a hydraulic engineer it shouldn't pose to many problems. Looking at my block i reckon it could have been a 1.8 turbo as its got the extra takeoff on the filter housing. i cant find out though as it came from pro drive and has never had an engine numer. It was a test bed engine.

evolotion
10-12-2006, 10:39 PM
alot of the oil filter housings had the extra take off mate, i have 2 here

cool, so when i decide i want some "pukka" hose made for an oil cooler setup i can annoy you :)

Yea, and then get going up the motorway to find the Frame has come away from the tower mounts and my engine is half way up the centeral reservation!

problem area no1 is clearance for the oil filter take off

http://img395.imageshack.us/img395/7121/dsc00174vh7.jpg
Problem area no2 is how close the box sits to tower. going to have to modifiy the top arm bolt.

http://img296.imageshack.us/img296/1561/dsc00176pn7.jpg
problem area no3 will need alot of reinforcement.

Also after a rover 200 gearbox mount as seen in noisey minis gallery instead of the metro mount. If anybodys got a spare.

evolotion
11-12-2006, 09:57 PM
Problem area 2. see picKups gallery, inspired me, modified top arm pivot / bolt worked a treat

Problem area 3. After some advice from Dave coxon, i braced between teh towers, then added trangulation to the brace and towers to stop them twisting this is important, without it under hard acceleration both front hub will pivot around the 2 big subframe bolts and want to touch each other, the hubs are supported by the ball joints, and held in pace by the track rod ends, as the track rod ends are behidn the towers, you will get lots of toe out if the above happens, and toe in under braking, could be interesting if not addressed

still got loads to do really just plodding on with it. Am doing the same as pickup and yourself in regards to the top arm. Just waiting on some plate steel to do some trianglation al over and some boxing off the end of the tubes. Think im spending to much time trying to make it look pretty rather that just getting on with it :|

Just wondering.

Am i right in thinking this is going in a standard round nose front?

If so. Have you actually eyed up how the frame and engine will fit into the space?

Hope thats not a stupid question.

Was just wondering as i'd say the position of the engine is largely dictated by the space for the engine to fit between the towers at the rear and the cam cover at the top front.

Would be a major pain if you got it all done then found the cam cover was right where the bonnet's supposed to be.

Must admit i haven't tried it in the car yet. I've built it more for ground clearence as im gonna use 10". So not really botherd if i end up with a buldge. But should be ok i hope. from where i've lined it up from everyone elses pics i should still keep it with in the bonnet.

Not a great many to be honest i've took a template for the drivers side mount. But havn't had a chance to go scrappy to get a rover 200 gearbox mount. As the metro item is to big. Also moving on wednseday so will be delayed even more. :(

Not te best of updates but tried the subframe and engine in the car yesterday for the first time http://img136.imageshack.us/img136/6554/enginein9ut.jpg All went well with a few alteration once the frame is removed. Need to lower the engine in the frame by a few millimeters to miss the drivers side rain gutter on the wing.

Not much of an update. But now i know it will go under a standard front end i chopped the old one off the trial car to get better acess while still doing the conversion.
http://img517.imageshack.us/img517/2040/dsc00313cu7.jpg
Any one else used this type of ex manifold? As the top part sits closer to the block and the only part i've modded is the flange. And all i done the was rather than have four studs on each corner i cut off the two front studs an fitted one in the middle. Will see how it seals :D But that means i can take the exhaust off while in the car without taking the front off :D

Also going to mod the n/s tower a little more so can move the engine more slightly that was as i can fit a standard oil filter housing on but would just like that little bit more clearance. i'll see if i can get a pic later.

gazwad
04-09-2007, 08:57 AM
after seeing your first frame in the flesh i can't belive you making it again, it was spot on! (maybe i'm just too impatient). as for the supercharger, i've been thinking about this too - considered mounting it above the gearbox with a universal jointed drive shaft round the back of the engine, driven off the front pulley via a belt (if you know what i mean??!?). that way you can keep the vvc inlet manifold, plenum etc all standard, just move the TB to the inlet on the charger.
p.s. i've still got that bit of ally for your remote oil filter

yeah, it's for the later engines with the coil packs on top of the plugs - no dizzy, should be the right one for that engine, the 5as is supposed to be matched to the ecu as well although i've not tested it. i dont have a wiring loom though but they come up on ebay sometimes - a standard MG TF (not F) non vvc loom should do the job.

see the bit where the lower frame rails reach up to meet the die rod mounts?

the sharp angle between the horisontal bottom rail and that nearly vertical bit wit the horisontal loading the tie rod will place on it, is gagging to crack. i know, my frame was origionally very similer. it cracked right there, and i didnt even have as big a "lever" action going on as you. please gusset it and hammer your sump for clerance if needed :)

plenty of room for the fan

should get plenty of airflow

Grill kind of hides it, Relocated the slam panel brace which should be hidden by some oil cooler pipes that'll be extenally mounted.

LHD mpi mini throttle cable was a direct fit.
Cable clutch sorted! Modded the mini pedal with an extra arm, welded a bush in the bulkhead and used a metro Cluth cable feels nice but won't know if it's working rite until I've started the engine.
Gear linkage was easy just cut down a mgzt one, also feels good and selects all gears nicely, can someone confirm reverse is to the driver and back?
Started drilling into my head but need to take the engine out to finish it as the drill bit is to long and can't get it lined up correctly with the engine in frame.
Going to have a look at the exhaust system tomorrow when I can be arsed to get out of bed.

there is no gearbox steady as standard on the pg1 set-up, just the sump one. i made an extra one on the diff housing using a modified sump type one attaching to the subframe - you will need it or you'll get loads of axle tramp as the engine twists up.

Im currently making a remote Oil filter adaptor aswell - just waiting on the unions arriving. Did you go with the 1/2" fittings? Can you confirm is it a 12.7mm drill bit for a 1/2" tap?

Doing my head in reading up on those things

12.7 seems really small

Have a look on here

i'll double check mine as i think my fittings 3/8 thead with a 1/2 tail which i then ran a larger drill though to made the id bigger

1/2" refers to the bore of the fitting?

Bsp fittings have a thead size and a tail size. So you can have a 1/2 bsp with a 1/2 tail or you can have a 3/8 bsp thread with a 1/2 tail etc

Big Thanks to forum member seanc for the new addition of the free shell. I did pay for the subbie and stuff though but the shell is in alot better condition than the other shell i had at the start of the week. Got a few little welding jobs to do but shell is in great condition.

Going scrappie tomorrow for a uj from a rover200 steering column as been told good things about them on the gearlinkage, Should go well with the new short shift i orderd from moto build:mrwilliams: Only bought it as the original gearstick was from a mgzt which unknown at the time has no theads for a gearknob:confused: and as its got a bend half way down i cant even stick it in a lathe.

Rover 200 UJ mod is definatally worth doing, takes the stirring poridge feel away. As for the quick shift you should have brought a honda CRX linkage like myself, works spot on! and only a tenner on ebay -

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Honda-Quick-Shifter-Civic-CRX-Integra-SHORT-SHIFT_W0QQitemZ350319924014QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_C arsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item5190b1d32e

£50 for the motobuild is steep in my opinion considering i cant see any gains over my £10 ebay one. Not many people know the crx linkage components are the same as rover ones!

Never mind it's ordered and paid for now. But still not managed to get down the scrappie yet for the uj. To be honest the linkage I have already got from a mgzt is already supposed to have a quick shift as standard compared to other pg1 linkages but like I said there's no threads for the gear knob.

Started to make some slow progress (at least theres progress)
Front hubs fully rebuilt
new bearing,
new ball joints,
new cv joints,
new drive flanges,
new discs,
new pads,
new nuts, lock tabs & grease nipples
Rebuilt calipers
New braided hoses

Also made a subframe jig
and have a nice pile of bent seamless tubing ready to make a new subframe:)

Maybe get some pictures at some point.

Shells going to get the finals bits of welding soon and then paint:rolleyes:

Just trying to decide on the rear subframe setup
Choices are
Hudderfield frame
chopped down original frame with solid mountings
custom round tube one
