I guess you havent got much body work to do?
or are you going to pull a single handed Overhaulin?

Allan McD
05-11-2006, 10:09 PM
The body work is ok just needs a new front end as I cut the old one off
The front was the only bit that wasnt replaced when I built it two years ago so it gives me an excuse to replace it.

In the last 24 hours my mind has changed so often I have a head ache.
The final decision is an allspeed frame and a turbo.
I have been promised the frame next week so it gives me time to sort out the turbo which I am fitting in the rear subframe.

Hi Allan,

Nice set-up, but is tail pipe not too short?
I think exhuast fume will kind of stay behind your van doors due to low pressure when you are driving?

Also, are you still looking for mk1 gearbox?
I think I might find yet another one... complete car.

Let me know if you are interested.

The tail pipe isnt finished the can needs re riveting as I striped it and shortened it .

Have you worked out how your going to run the air pipes to and from the turbo? (next to the exhaust?? )

Allan McD
14-11-2006, 07:07 AM
The exhaust is one of the pipes, the other I plan to run inside but I have changed my mined before so time will tell.

Allan McD
17-11-2006, 08:48 PM
I got the lower suspension bars in and a smaller oil filter from a yamaha motorbike fitted,as I needed to fit a sandwich Plate to give me an outlet for the oil supply to the turbo and some where to put an oil pressure swich used to turn on my oil return pump.
I have sat a radiator in just to see what space I have not sure what I am going to do yet about it.

The frame is for a MK1, but mk2 and mk3 are pretty much/more or less the same.

Looks like it wont be long till you have it all running!!

Are you going to run the stock ecu (chipped?) or are you going for something aftermarket?

Allan McD
18-11-2006, 07:06 AM
I am going to run the stock ecu initially just to get it on the road but I have a megasquirt which I am planning on using for the ignition day one and fuel later.

Things are moving fast I got the full Swift steering column with wheel and all the electric controls fitted it took a fair bit of fabricating but I got there.
I also got the suspension finished on the RH side I will get the other side done tomorrow (I don’t work Mondays in the winter) and measure what I need for drive shafts.
Its now time for LAGER :)
Allan
Picks tomorrow

Hi Allan,

You are going so fast!
I have made drive shaft and I think it was 320mm long.
If you make it so that it has equal length driveshaft then it is about that.
Swift drive shaft has Nitrided and it is very hard upto70% of diameter... from outside towards in.
I have now made 3 of them.
I got 2x mk2 Swift driveshafts with Mini CV end and 1x mk1 Gti.

Here is a link for it.

I have just been out to the garage and done a rough measurement and my shafts need to be around 320mm and 250mm there isn’t any adjustment for left - right movement so I cant get equal length shafts easily (its a Mk3 using Allspeed).

ed4ran
21-11-2006, 08:49 PM
Spare? Is this just incase you blow up the first one?
or are you going to rebuild it and then swap them over?

Allan McD
21-11-2006, 08:54 PM
Both reasons.
Allan

Allan McD
21-11-2006, 09:00 PM
I have got the subframe fitted for the final time (I hope)
and the brake master cylinder fixed I had to tilt it a we bit for clearance reasons.
http://www.16vminiclub.com/gallery/albums/userpics/master-cylinder.JPG
It still needs a bit of finishing and I have the clutch near finished its cable using the Suzuki parts bar the mini foot lever it just need boxing in and weled.

Got any pics of the amount of bulkhead mods needed?

Allan McD

This is a picture of my bulkhead but it had a turbo a series before so it already had the bulkhead turbo box fitted.

I have got the fuel system finished all the fuel lines are tight and when I stick a battery on the pump it runs at a constant 40psi I have an adjustable pressure regulator (rising rate) with a pressure gauge on.
No fuel leeks.

The wiring is thrown in and it runs no water so it only ran a few seconds but it’s charging and starts from the key. I am using the full harness Inc the steering column and ignition switch and stalks. The van has an MOT for about 3 weeks and I just got my free 12 months tax in the post today.
On the road soon. 8)

Hi,

Very quick build...I wish I could do the same once I go back into it.
I have a question, which car/bike is that radiator from?
It looks compact and beefy enough.

Keep up the good work.

Allan McD
03-12-2006, 08:42 PM
Its coming along ok I have my drive shafts fitted and the gears all work the water side is compleate and the turbo and exhaust is just needing a bit of tinkering.
I have the oil scavinge pump plumbed in and wired its working a treat.
My garage has been a bit wet latley but today there was a small stream running through it so I had to dig a large dranage ditch down one side it was raining like !!!!!!!!! at the time no fun
Allan

Allan McD
04-12-2006, 05:07 PM
Its on the road and going well there are loads of things to do to finish it. But I did 25 miles today with no wipers (it wasn’t raining) no horn and the electrics inside the van are chaotic the instrument panel is sitting on the passengers seat and there are wires all over the place. There is a fair bit of noise from the air intake which is inside the van I will box it in this week sometime.
Here is a video from just before its maiden run

There dosnt seem to be any turbo lag but I am just giving it a bit of a shake down so I will let you know.
I will get a video up of it on the road soon.

Now your just making the rest of us look bad, you need to slow down abit on the next one

How much boost do you think youll be runing? Look forward to hearing how the rear mount turbo works out.

Allan McD
05-12-2006, 08:43 PM
It boosts at 3000rpm with 6psi by 3500 I had it at 12 ish on the first run but after fidling with the bleed valve I am going to settle for 6psi until I get my megasquirt fitted.
I plan to run 10psi with the standard compression I think it will be reliable at that. I recon it will sound pretty cool with a dump valve under the rear subframe 8)

Ps Evo I have been converted.

I had to pay £102 to get that one
a 400 mile round trip, if you want one you just have to keep looking and traveling.

Its ace I still had a mot from before so I have had it on the road for a few weeks. But it now has an MOT with a Suzuki engine.
I am running it at 5psi at the mo but I have had it at 10psi on 10 I recon its around 150bhp using my ass as a dyno

Ps it dosnt boost very well in the low gears I assume thats because of the turbo being so far from the engine
