View Full Version : cam information
Hello everyone.
I`m looking for some info on standard 1800cc cams from the mgf/lotus etc mpi models.
these will be fitted to a 1400 mpi K in the near future.
what i`m wondering is if anyone knows what degree they are.
I think they are 244 or maybe 245.
pipers fast road cam is i believe 248.
i`m finding it difficult to find out if the above is true for the 1800s.
can any one help? :?
i could of course go for the vvc exhaust cams, but i`m unsure whether at 268 degree these would be a little too unkind on the low down lb ft.
have any of you had any experience with either of these types of cam or the piper ones on a 1400 mpi?
cheers. :)
I'm running a set of VVC exhaust cams in my MPi Metro and they are fine for low down and have improved the power band noticably, worthwhile modification.
MPiGTi.
do you use 2 vvc exh. cams, or replace the mpi exh cam with the vvc but retain the standard inlet?
do you know what sort of power you gained?
the car seem quicker etc etc?
you can also try the 52mm trophy throttle body for good results.
if you have an exhaust and filter upgrade, its incredibly noticeable, it feels like you`ve taken the cork out of the bottle so to speak.
Do you go on the PMC forum as well?
cheers.
I'm running 2 VVC exhaust cams with one modified to take the spigot for the distributor.
Power I'd estimate perhaps 5-7bhp. Car feels decidedly more 'nippy' the tradeoff being a slightly lumpier idle.
Mine being a metal inlet MPi has a 58mm throttle body as standard so a 52mm version wouldn't be an upgrade. ;)
Only other external upgrades are an ITG panel filter in the original airbox as the noise of the K&N 57i kit wasn't worth the gains IMO and an OEM exhaust from the earlier MPi without the catalytic converter. Coupled with the cams and head work the car is quite a nice drive.
I wouldn't use PMC if I was paid to, its a bit too "what spoiler will fit?" "where can i get blue washer jets?" and "will seventeen inch wheels fit?" for me.
MPiGTi.
i don`t use PMC simply because its full of either the sort of person you described or know it alls who shout down everyone elses opinion and get all huffy when you argue back...
a bit too cliqy for my liking.
are you sure you have a 58mm tb?
the gti has a 48mm one, the 52 is from the new mg trophy models.
go to www.mg-rover.org its a very common mod there from the 1400s up to the 1800s.
it costs about £100, although a scrappy would prob sell you one for £30 or so.
:)
I'm talking about the earlier MPi with the metal inlet -same bore as the T-series, the plastic one has a 48mm TB. I used to use mgr.org too. ;) Good luck finding a 52mm throttle body in a scrapyard!
MPiGTi.
i`ve got an early mpi with the metal inlet.
i didn`t know about the throttle body being different.
i think you`ve just saved me a lot of cash there, cheers :)
