Not updated in a while!!

Been doing some work on my c16se mini recently!!

Modified my harness bar – also going to add in some 6mm harness guides for the passengers belt as well (next week!!)

http://www.minis4monkeys.co.uk/Mini/2008.11.19/IMG_4773.jpg

Also cut out the rear seat belt mounts from an other mini I have – and welded these in so I have mounting points for my front harnesses!!

http://www.minis4monkeys.co.uk/Mini/2008.11.19/IMG_4787.jpg

Decided to strengthen the rear suspension points by adding some CDS tubing from the turret to the rear rollcage – had a look at Dowz thread and it seamed like a good idea!!

http://www.minis4monkeys.co.uk/Mini/2008.11.21%20Small//IMG_4816.jpg

http://www.minis4monkeys.co.uk/Mini/2008.11.19/IMG_4807.jpg

Upgraded my clutch from allspeed cable adaptor & cable to a mini master cylinder(MC) and wildwood pull slave cylinder(SC) as I was never happy with the clutch set-up!!

http://www.minis4monkeys.co.uk/Mini/2008.11.21%20Small//IMG_4819.jpg

Hooked it up today to the MC with a temp pipe, bleed then tested but am having issues with the SC not moving enough!! When depressing the pedal I only can achieve 23mm of travel on the SC before my foot hit the floor!! I removed the MC as I was interested to see what the pedal was limiting me to and depressed this MC fully and managed to get 28mm of movement on the SC. I really was hoping for around 35>40mm! So I am looking at getting a larger bore MC – is there a mini upgrade with greater than a 0.75”???
I know I could start to modify the pivot point on the clutch pedal – but would like to see any other options available!!
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

After messing around with the clutch for too long I moved onto start making up my fiberglass dash that I acquired from eBay!

http://www.minis4monkeys.co.uk/Mini/2008.11.21%20Small//IMG_4829.jpg

Acewell 3994, Savage Switches & a start switch.

http://www.minis4monkeys.co.uk/Mini/2008.11.21%20Small//IMG_4833.jpg

Not sure what my final finish on the dash is going to be…that’s one I need to think about!! Needs some trimming to clear my front roll cage….(on next weeks task list!!)

Really need to find a decent solution to this clutch issue - answers on a postcard please………

Monkeyman!!

Move the attachement point closer to the pivot point to a position where 28mm moves the end where it is currently attached a distance of 40mm.

or

buy a gearbox with all the hydraulic bits already in it.

MattG
22-11-2008, 04:10 PM
you should have just used the vauxhall internal slave cylinder , works a treat with the mini master.

Matt

Thanks pob! Had thought of moving the clutch arm pivot point....think that will be the best option if it works! Going to give that a go tomorrow & will let you know how things go!!

Failing that I will need to bite the bullet and go for a vaux internal slave cylinder! If I need to remove the engine/box to split I will probably source a F13W gearbox with internal slave and fit that!

Cal

Has anyone looked at the daewoo clutch slave cykinder set up? It uses an external slave working on a kind of reversed clutch arm, exactly the same boxes as vauxhall and all bolts on the front.

getthewheelsinline
26-11-2008, 08:37 AM
Finished modifying my harness bar – added some 6mm round bar for the passengers seat harness as well!

http://www.minis4monkeys.co.uk/Mini/2008.11.25%20small/IMG_4858.jpg

Then fitted up the rear interior & the driver’s front seat and harness:

http://www.minis4monkeys.co.uk/Mini/2008.11.25%20small/IMG_4860.jpg

Modified the clutch arm by reducing it by 40mm….

Refitted the petrol tank, battery and started her up!! Adjusted the clutch then tried driving and it was ok driving back and forward on the ramp :D

The real test will be when I clear the entrance to the garage and take her a spin – hopefully this afternoon!

Then it’s onto the dash – going to replace the lower dash rail and change it for some CDS tubing then fit the fibreglass dash. After that its onto wiring up the dash and then going to tidy up ALL the wiring and mount the ECU etc…so that should keep me busy!! 8)

i have got the same willwood slave clyinder will have a look tomorrow to see what master i have got.
also have u monted it the wrong way round as the main body with the pipe going to it will move so it needs a flexey pipe to it.i have mine mounted the other way round.

Had a wee spin today and the clutch seems to be doing the job - much better!! :)

i noticed you mounted the clutch slave to the subframe , dont forget if the engine moves this will make the clutch lever move ....

Fair Point Matt!! - I will monitor this & see if the rear mounts needs re:positioning!

also have u monted it the wrong way round as the main body with the pipe going to it will move so it needs a flexey pipe to it.i have mine mounted the other way round.

2lrMiniVan - Yeah I just made-up the hard pipe to test! I plan to install a braided flex now that I know it works!! The body of the cylinder does move when the clutch is pressed. I wasnt sure if the thread on the adjustment side of the cylidner (5/16" - 24) was the same as the thread on the spherical jointed end!! I'll have a look at this tomorrow and swap it round if it is!!

http://www.wilwood.com/Products/006-MasterCylinders/011-SC/clutchslavedwg.gif

Removed the front roll cage today to start fitting my dashboard! This should give me acess to remove the lower dash rail and add in some CDS tubing shapped to my new dash...out comes the tube bender tomorrow!!

Thanks again for your comments,

Got the lower dash rail cut out & the new CDS 38mm tube bent and welded in!

Trial fitted my fiberglass dash:

http://www.minis4monkeys.co.uk/Mini/2008.11.28%20small/IMG_4865.jpg

Just need to sort out the dash fixings points then I can re-install the font roll cage. Plan to get my Acewell dash fitted & wired this week along with my other switches!

Done some more work recently!! 8)

Started fitting the savage switches - crimped terminals then heat shrunk;
Just got the fan switch and the hazards to finish!
http://www.minis4monkeys.co.uk/Mini/IMG_4980.jpg

Moved onto tiding the wiring in the engine bay - looking slightly better! :)
http://www.minis4monkeys.co.uk/Mini/IMG_5001.jpg

Have decided to install 7 pin trailer connection on the inner wings for my removable front wiring - all connected up now. Just need to complete the wiring on the front end:

http://www.minis4monkeys.co.uk/Mini/IMG_5012.jpg

Bought some braided goodridge brake & clutch hose & fittings from rally design and changed my clutch hose and all the front brake hoses, also got a brake master cylinder cap & wiried this to my acewell failure light!:

http://www.minis4monkeys.co.uk/Mini/IMG_5027.jpg

Got some more samco hoses & fittings to re-do the cooling hoses at the rear of the engine - all now completed & installed! :D

http://www.minis4monkeys.co.uk/Mini/IMG_5028.jpg

Stripped both front hubs off the car to redo the ball joints - so will get these done this week!!

http://www.minis4monkeys.co.uk/Mini/IMG_5035.jpg

Hopefully going to get most of my outstanding tasks completed over the holidays...if my wife lets me...ha!! :D

Also lost my platinum wedding ring last week...found it on the garage floor today

Oh and Merry Christmas all - Hope you enjoy yourselves!!

getthewheelsinline
21-01-2009, 09:40 PM
Thanks!!

Peter - I rewired the front electrics. And then put the wiring in 12mm convoluted tubing. I used the fixing screws from the arch to secure the tubing by using cable tie mounts and some cable ties! Seems to work a treat!!

Managed to sort out my Acewell speedo issue - had to re-mount the reed switch. Sorted now!!:)

Just remembered I was having an issue with my alternator light on the acewell!! When i turn the ignition on the light comes on bright - as soon as the engine is running the light dims but does not go out fully! Anyone experienced this?

Hi there, the mini is looking great!

you are the only other person other than evolution that iv seen on here that stays relatively close to me lol i stay in Livingston. my m8 is just started his project and is considering a vauxhall engine and im doing the frame. Would be great to see your mini close up some time :D

Hi Guys!! After keeping the mini locked up while I was away travelling the globe for 8 months I have decided to get things developing on the mini front again!!

Managed to get hold of a F13 diesil gearbox with internal slave. Was never 100% happy with the wilwood external slave setup.
http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o275/zarasdancing/clutch1.jpg
http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o275/zarasdancing/clutch2.jpg
After discussions with the seller he managed to locate the V fitting (with bleed nipple) and hose.
http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o275/zarasdancing/clutchvfittingpipe.jpg
So the plan is to remove the front end & split the engine / gearbox to swap this in this weekend.

I have also bought another rear beam as the homemade effort by the previous owner is not too smart!! So thats a task I will do when Im stripping the mini into bits anyway!!

http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o275/zarasdancing/rearbeam.jpg

Also got my insurance renewed for a decent price - so thats the push to get it back on the road!!

Monkeys!!

Well managed to spend the morning in the garage - got everything stripped ready for lifting.

http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o275/zarasdancing/reardyforlifting.jpg

Then lifted out - just need to split the box.

http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o275/zarasdancing/engineout.jpg

Just powerwashed the gearbox to get the majority of crude off. & quick spash with Gunk. Not sure I can be bothered spending the hours cleaning the gearboox / engine to a quality that paint will adhere to...... Never going to be a concours mini as it will be a daily driver anyway.

Unless someone has a better idea - that makes cleaning them not as time consuming?!??

Thanks, Callum

We'll the clutch saga continues....

I split the Engine / Gearbox to find the Clutch driven plate has been installed back to front by the previous owner resulting in wear to the cushioning springs & flywheel retaining bolts!! I thought it was the release bearing on the way out!! Pictures Below:

http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o275/zarasdancing/GetAttachment-1.jpg

http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o275/zarasdancing/GetAttachment-2.jpg

Obviously I wish to replace the clutch but I am unsure as to which c16se clutch kit to purchase as apparently there are two options depending on engine number.

Am I right in thinking the engine number on the C16se should be stamped along the engine / gearbox joint @ the front of the block? I have looked but with out success!!
http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o275/zarasdancing/GetAttachment.jpg

Does any one know what clutch kit code I require? As with no Reg Number or Engine Number I am unsure!!

Thanks,

Callum

or just take your old one allong (assuming it is the correct one as the guy stuck it on backwards for a reason ! )

I dont have any confidence in the previous owners work - not to mention his parts selection.

Hi there. just looking through your build.. very nice! was wondering did you get the fibreglass smooth boot or make your own with the original?

getthewheelsinline
07-06-2010, 09:07 PM
Mini_Me, Thanks - the boot is the orginal steel item.

Update 07/June.

Managed to get a clutch kit to suit my potted flywheel.

Removed the subframe & suspension components to get these sand blasted and painted while everything is stripped anyway! My younger sister has said she will clean & paint my engine & gearbox while it's out!!

Picked up some other parts for the c16se inc a Janspeed 4 branch exhaust manifold - so going to see if this is a better setup than the standard 1.4l standard item.

The wide ratio F13 diesel box with the internal slave that I am fitting has a 3.74 final drive. I also obtained a F13W with a 4.18 final drive.

My mini has 12 inch wheels and will be used as an everyday car - based on this should I just stick with the 3.74 FD?

Thanks,

Have a look at this gear ratio calculator (http://www.fatboyraceworks.com/gears/index.php?MaxRPM=4000&TireDiameter=19.09&GearRatio1=3.55&GearRatio2=2.24&GearRatio3=1.48&GearRatio4=1.12&GearRatio5=0.89&GearRatio6=&FinalDrive=3.74&TireWidth=165&TireAspect=70&RimDiameter=10&MaxRPM_2=3500&TireDiameter_2=19.09&GearRatio1_2=3.73&GearRatio2_2=1.96&GearRatio3_2=1.31&GearRatio4_2=0.95&GearRatio5_2=0.76&GearRatio6_2=&FinalDrive_2=3.55&TireWidth_2=165&TireAspect_2=70&RimDiameter_2=10&Calculate=Calculate%2FGraph&Compare=1) to see the effect of different ratios and FD's. The link is set up with F17CR/3.74:1 as transmission 1 and F17WR/3.55:1 as transmission 2 with 10" wheels. You can also select the redline RPM (I chose different revs to try to see the effect of the different ratios on cruising.

If you aren't sure on the ratios for your gearbox(es), you can find them here (http://www.opel-infos.de/getriebe/f13plus.html).
