I think that would be a mk2 or possibly mk3 engine,
Mark I : 1986 - 1989 - Smallest/lightest with square lines, beam rear suspension.
Mark II Phase I: 1989 - 1991- Round lines, rear reg plate between light clusters, no catalytic convertor as standard.
Mark II Phase II : 1991 - 1996 - Rear reg plate on bumper, revised rear light clusters, different bumpers, catalytic converters mandatory.
Mark III : 1996 - 2004 - Revised bumpers and lights again. No GTi model.

Hi Matt.
The engine is the same beside the ECU and wiring.
On your engin there are some diferent engine mounts (Less)
The gear box is also different but you can swap bouth ways.
Hope this helps....

Hi Matt,
Mk1 engine has 19mm timing belt and uses better quality crank shaft than any other mks, but it has not so very good cylinder head port(R75).
MK2/3 has 25mm timing belt and uses lesser material but due to wider timing belt it might be better engine to use due to better better port(R100).
Mk1 engine has Mechanical advance dizzy but mk2 onwards has ECU operated dizzy.
Gearbox wise, mk1 has cross pins diff as std. but mk2 onwards is single pin like Mini gearbox diff.
Mounts are slightly different, too.
Mk1 has under gearbox mounts but mk2 has front gearbox mount.
I think no. of mounts are same just mk1 is generally smaller car.
I know this because I got one as a daily driver!
Cheers

Hi Matt.
The info above is very correct.
Mk1 has 5 engine mounts but mk2 on has only 3 mounts.
I have bouth setup and I can make you some pictures in hi-res together with the frame pictures.
Are you planing an MK2 setp fram?

Block the same gearbox different, i think your frame will do with minor mods to the gearbox side
just buy an engine and test fit :lol:z<<
By the way i sourced a complete head out of an 5 doors glxi suzuki
(mk1 engine 30 pounds!) i didnīt know before that those cars were fitted with gti engines maybe they are easier to find in certain countrys?

Hi.
I receved my frame on friday, Nice piece of work by the way. I have the MK1 and MK2 setup. I have looked at the possibility to mount the MK2 on the frame.
The only thing I can see by looking on the to different gearbox's is the gearbox mount is possitioned littel different. (can be don by small mods)
The MK2 setup is a better way for the convertion since the mk2 gearbox is ready to be used with a hydraulik clutch and than you can use the old standard mini clutch master pump.
The only thing next you have to by you a new diff. since the mk2 diff is only a singel pin (mentioned above)
I can post som picure of the to box's.

Hi,
If you want mk1 cross pin diff, let me know.
I think I have about 3 spare!
Also, if you are to fit mk1 diff in mk2 then you will need 2 spacers.
I think 1mm and 3.4 or 4.3mm.
Cheers

mk3 , the two engine mounts should fit , but again gearbox is different.
otherwise get a mk1 gearbox to bolt onto the mk3 engine.
pretty sure someone else will confirm / deny

basically the gearbox mount is under the gearbox at the moment , where the mk2 is on the front of the gearbox , so yes could all be modded.
i am looking into a mk2 frame , but think it would need a stronger gearbox mount if mounted like that. but there is nothing stopping you trying to fit it.
(note drive shafts are different as well on a mk1/mk2)
