View Full Version : Who has got the Rover MEMS in their Mini 'K' ???

It's looking like Ellies mini is going to have a K in it after all - a few reasons:
1) cheap as chips,
2) the 1400's do seem quite reliable - much more so than the 1800's! (i know of 3 1400's in rovers that have done over 150k and still going well)
3) How light are they???? Couldn't believe it when i moved a whole engine (easilly) on my own in the breakers the other day!
4) Cheap road tax
5) good economy,
6) she doesn't want big power - just 100 or so hp, and a 5 spd box!!!

I will probably be MPi, as this is such a better system, but eiter way - does anyone have tips on wiring?
I know the spi and mpi metro gti's had a multiplug behind the ecu that was common, so any tips on the wiring colours and coding at this plug would be good! Sure, i could figure this out on my jack, but if one of you friendly guys has already done it....

Cheers,
D

If no one can help I've got the Haynes manual - might save you a few quid buying one !!

Yeah, the Haynes Manual is probably your best bet !!

The good thing is that the injection loom is virtually self-contained so there will only be a few wires to connect - I've had to look at this to get rid of my SPi on the Cooper to wire in the Vtec

If you're interested I dig out my notes on the Mini system to give you an idea of what you'll probably find at the multiplug on the Metro system

colour codes and the like would be usefull...

The mini or rover 214/414 didn't have a multiplug like on the metros - but as you say, it's an independant loom (just need to know what some of the wires are!)

Marc and I took the loom out of his a while back which was pretty simple - admittedly his is the SPi but the haynes gave enough info - sure if covers the MPi too - I'll ask Marc to check since he's got it at the mo !!

Rich,
The SPI and MPi looms are near identical as far as the engine bay goes, but the black square connector halfway between the ecu and heater intake is where the complications start....

I assume Mark lopped off the wiring loom behind this plug, so he had some lengths of wire to play with?

The wires that need identifiyting are:
Inertia switch
fuel pump
tacho (easy)
ign live feed
throttle switch (on pre 1993 metros)
alternator warning lamp
temperature gauge
Reverse light switch
oil pressure lamp
and (i think) starter solenoid wiring.

and anything else i've missed!!!!

Dave
I have got all the info you need - just got to find it!!
How old is the engine?
Richard
PS I think the throttle switch is only for SPI systems - I have never fitted one

The throttle switch was also on the 'two plug' ECU's used on the very early (1992) MPi metro GTI's. Rover got clever and realised they could lose the other plug on the ECU along with other tricks like 'commonalising' contacts (the earth's on sensors i understand) and stuff like the throttle switch at this time!

Hate to say it, but i've become a bit of a MEMS / metro GTI freak!!!!

Splicing the mini wiring loom into the metro one is actually pretty simple, The engine loom is separate from the rest of the metro loom and you only have about 11 wires to conect up. From memory, most of the mini wiring colours correspond exactly with the metro ones. With exception to the coil wires - most minis had a balast resist wire which needs bipassing straight to 12 volt ignition.

Hope this helps

Dave try these, taken from my notes and Haynes

Inertia switch - White /purple and brown/grey

fuel pump - white/green

tacho - white/black

ign live feed - white

throttle switch (on pre 1993 metros) - try black/grey & white grey

alternator warning lamp - brown/yellow

temperature gauge - green/light blue

Reverse light switch - green/brown & green

oil pressure lamp - white/brown

starter solenoid wiring. - white/red

Definately a family resemblance to the mini wiring

I was interested in what you said about the throttle switch, my latest bargin of an engine has a two plug ECU so that will need the switch. Any idea if it makes contact when the pedal is released or visa versa?

Mine has the throttle pedal switch (2 plug Mpi ECU). It releases as the pedal is pressed.

I have discovered that most wire colours correspond, but as my Mini loom was in a state chose to fit the whole metro loom. Not too bad a job, and gives you some nice little extras.

Dave - unfortuantely all of the loom that headed off towards the dash was destroyed in its little fire - got all of that to figure out later - all we salvaged was the loom going to the various parts of the engine  !
