the frame on the trans side needs to be modified as well. the trans is about 30% larger in bulk so that lower arm needs to be lowered. ill take a few pics of ours to give you an idea.

I think this thing is going to be a great DD.
Looks like there should be a little extra space in front of box for a decent rad :D
wilp99
24-12-2011, 03:16 PM
you would think that but.. its actually bigger. the trans barely fits. i got about 1/4 inch around mine. plus you got to fit the trans cooler lines that go from trans to the bottom of the rad. but it does fit.

took a few pics. her frame is purple.
this one is of the right side where the trans meets the front frame corner above the tie bar. had to cut a notch out of the front piece and make it thinner. from 1 1/4 to about 1/2 in thick.
http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u276/wilp99/IMG_1010.jpg
this one is the same side going back to just before the lower arm attatchment. i cut the frame off and turned it over to make it dip. it only dips about 1" lower than the rest of the frame.
http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u276/wilp99/IMG_1008.jpg
same side further back. notice where it turns back to the center of the car i notched the bar like an "L", this was to be able to lower the trans in the frame just a bit more.
http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u276/wilp99/IMG_1011.jpg
same piece just on the back side, notice the gusset. that corner is where i cut the frame and added a piece to make the 90 deg bend to the right to meet up with the piece that goes under the trans.
http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u276/wilp99/IMG_1012.jpg
heres a crappy pic of the trans mount. the trans mount itself needs the back edges (where it meets the frame) grinded flat. you can also barley make out the mods i made to the trans mount on the frame side. just cut the small straight arms off, and made longer (4") and cut them to where they angle up about 45 deg. if you look closely you can see the gap (or lack there of) where the dipstick tube is. i did not modify the tower itself at all. i did cut the extra threads off the top arm pivot pin.
http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u276/wilp99/IMG_1013.jpg
http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u276/wilp99/IMG_1014.jpg
another one of the trans (frame side mount)
http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u276/wilp99/IMG_1007.jpg
here is the mods i made to the front of the frame where it meets the removeable bar. basically left the bar mounting "pad" alone, but the square tubing holding it on i had to remove about 1/2 of it so its alot thinner. i welded a new piece of steel on the removed side so it wasent just a cavity.

i will warn you, its a tight fit. but it does fit. but i only have about 4mm between the gb and the frame at its closest. also the rear gearbox mount holes end up about 2" to the left of the car (trans almost completley misses the steering rack) but this also means you have to make a rear mount. unless yours has the equal length shaft, then you'd have the space. mine had one long and one short shaft so the left pot was right in the way of the rear mount.
also the front tie bar gets pretty close to the pressure port on the trans, make sure that when you are positioning the eng/trans in the frame you maintain the clearance. mine is about 3mm away from the arm, and the pic above was taken with the car on the ground. but it does not hit.

This is being built for a customer, they requested an auto B16, so its paid work. I wont move away from Suzuki just yet, I want to see 300 BHP out of a 1.3 & I love AWD :)

Its not done yet, but I am sure we can make it fit, it is by far the worst one we have ever done though:(
Wow,im absolutely loving this build. Have you had to move the steering rack?
We have left the rack in its normal position, one of the rack bolts will have to be countersunk & also one of the gearbox bolts. It is seriously tight everywhere :(

This is looking brilliant so far. I look forward to seeing the finished article!
Very impressed with the work rate here, keep at it
Two rads might be an option, whatever fits in front and a side mounted second jobbie?
Is this gonna be a fixed front end?

Thanks for the comments, not sure about the rad yet, that will be a job for next week hopefully:D
Very interesting project, I can't drive a manual gearbox either so I'm going to follow this build. The subframe you use, what brand is it? Or did you made it from scratch?
Keep up the good work.

We are getting their, but it is a real pig of a job & the boys have been stacked out with work. At the stage of modifying the inlet manifold & making an alternator bracket. Will update with more pics ASAP:D
Will let you know about the engine when we have confirmed what the owner wants to do with it:D

Hey there,
cool another with taht nice idea "Honda Automatic"! :p
I thought i was the only mad one :D
I finished my 64 Mini Van a time ago with the 1.6Vtec + S24a Automatik Box and it drives really nice!
Okay, I did it slightly different, because i didnīt use any Mini Axle Parts for better driveability, 280mm vented Discs 15" Wheels and mixed parts from a Golf 2 + MGF/Rover 114 GTI in a custom made Frame.
Here are some pics... during the building process:
http://www.custom-minis.de/custom-minis/Projekte/Seiten/Ollis_Van_Upgrade_files/Media/IMG_1158/IMG_1158.jpg
I need space under the bonnet in future for the intercooler, so the Radiator went to the back :D

The "Shifter" has its postion on the steering column (the dash is custom-made and now vinyl trimmed)
