So you allow the Mini to basically "Hump" the Evo, and Bobs your knob, a couple of weeks later and you have a Hybrid vehicle. Genious:p

Hi Allan, put the engine on blocks where you want it and build a box section frame around it something like this, put as much triangulation in as you can and beef up the mounting points,

Would need bulkhead mods and maybe a few subtle mods to suit the motor, but the locost front end would probably be ideal (all the suspension geometry of a sports car is laid out in a book for you) ;)

The engine and gearbox is pretty wide, so don't think you would get reasonable length wishbones unless you could get the inner pickup points in front and behind the engine/gearbox, are you using the evo uprights? i'm sure you will work something out, you have had plenty of fabrication practice now,
Steve.

The engine is a bit wide for this setup ;)
But thanks for the input all input is appriciated.
Allan
Bear in mind my front subframe is about 150mm ish narrower than the locost one to make the track a bit more sensible. Just putting the point across that geometry plays a massive part in the subframe design (but i'm sure Allan knows this already) i'll shut up now :( .

Some more shots of how you've joined the Evo subby into the spaceframe? I think I can see what you've done but a shot from inside would be good.
I havnt done much I didnt build the frame its a Dave Kimberly frame
I recognised the basic cage from past web searches 'when I was dreaming' , but that's the easy bit compared to the rest of the build.
The intersting stuff is how you get the subframes joined in, what suspension solutions you conjur up, how will drive be acheived, how will the steering work. IE lots of headscratching & clever fixes needed.
I'm sure Markyd & the Smurfy's had big headache's from thinking stuff through with their spaceframes too.

The drive will be the Evo with a shortened prop shaft so no problem there.
The front suspension I am trying not to think about (much) at the moment I will get it on its wheels and look from there, probably mcpherson struts.

I'm looking at it and wondering, after building buttercup, if I was doing it what would I do different but I can't see anything. It all looks like it should work. The main area on mine that caused head scratching was the front suspension as I found myself very limited on height and I'm still not happy my solution.
For the front suspension could you not make some plates up to fit the hub upright and weld them to a coil over

Will you have to fit the radiator in the back?
I hope not :(
With 350bhp :D It will make a lot of heat very quickly,The Wolf was getting real hot after 0.75 of a mile with a Swift GTI rad in the front
I had to fit a much larger one to cure it.
I am sure rear mount would be difficult to make work.

I couldn't put my finger on what didn't look right earlier but I've been looking at mine today and it jumped out at me. Your engine looks to far back because it's connected directly to the frame, you have not allowed a foot or so for the footwell. Here is to pic of mine to show what I mean
http://i426.photobucket.com/albums/pp343/darkmutton/P1000227.jpg
Obviously you must have done the measurements so it must be right but I think it might make it a bit tight inside the car. My main hoop is right back where roughly the healboard would be and the back of my seat is nearly in line with it. A bulkhead mounted pedal box may help

Big engines, mass horsepower seat of your pants racing, superb!
On the issue of heat use ceramic fibre blanket where needed its capable of 1600 deg c with 128 kg density, totally fire proof comes in a roll 7.6 metres by 600mm wide and is light stuff too.

Hi Allan,
What size wheels are you going to use?
Will you still have spare set of tyres for me to have!?
Is that Euro wheel arches or came with body shell?
It is looking good and before I come over, I think this mini will be ready to drive!
Cheers

that looks really good allan, I have been pondering all week as to how far you would have got with it because you havent updated for over a week ha ha. Do you think you will have the first drive in 2011???
What has been done to the engine etc? if I remember correctly older evos need a bit more modifications to take that sort of power compared to a newer one.....
Thanks

The engines on an evo 1-3 can take well over 350bhp in standard spec, mine has upgraded pistons from an evo 6 but the rest is standard so it should be fine with 350bhp.

I would run it from the back of were the lateral bar meets the hoop, down to the front of the top mount, On the outside of the tube that is there, This will give the loadings somewhere to go, Hope that makes sense,

Well done Mr McD.
Are you running with MS2 or are you on v3 MS1? (he said trying to sound intelligent.)
The reason I ask is I wondered if you'd be trying to map the wee machine on split tables IE using TPS for the pre-boost areas & MAP for the boosted areas. I have read that with MS2 you can do this more easily than with MS1.
Allan McD
04-12-2011, 05:13 PM
Its MS2
I havnt planned maping yet I will wait until it is rolling with tyres and a radiator ;)
I am just doing a bit of setup as I type it takes a long time to just set the rev limit/ boost limit/ and set all the rpm's and loads in the maps.
I know its easy to change the setings but I have to work out what they should be.

He sure is he built a new carbon tubed car a couple of yers ago and it broke national records every where it went all year streght out of the box.
And when I say built I mean he molded the tubb and made the wings etc etc
This year Lee who drives it won a couple of rounds af the British championship in it beating v8 Juds etc and its only a Hayabusa motor.
When you get your car built he may be able to help but he is very busy, let me know and I will put in a word.

It may just need a piston and a head gasket
The pistons are original Mitsubishi and are available in ones and are fairly cheap ;)

What's visually wrong? I can't tell.
It almost looks like it has a hammered finish?
And it looks like it has oil on it?
I'm also assuming it's supposed to be pocketed for the valves?
Other than those things, I couldn't see an issue?

left of the piston, where the valve cutouts are, fractured clean through. at a guess id say detonation cracked the ringland below and the crack spread. have a piston similar in work im sure. but thats just a guess, could be anything.

If you look close you can see the pioston rings (you shouldnt bee able to see them ;))
As Evo said detonation probably cracked the ringland and the rest is history.
I have found out that compression was higher than standard 8:9.1, standard is 8:5.1 which is a bit high for the boost I was running.
The car was running plenty rich and the water and inlet temps were cool so it must have just been too much boost.
I have logs from my runs which log near every thing :megasquirt:

I have the engine stripped down and it needs a set of pistons and two valves.
As it was in bits I gas flowed the head and ground the valves in (I had some spares)
I just need to purchase pistons and a head gasket and I can go testing again

what was the damage on the sides of the pistons like? assuming there was some!
Allan McD
12-02-2012, 08:50 PM
There isnt any damage to the sides just what you can see on one and a crack on the ring land of one more.
It has been suggested that the pistons are in the wrong way round as they are from an evo6 and with them having offset piston pins they could have had to much load on the side causing the failure.
I am probably going to get a set of Wiseco pistons which will give me 8:2.1 compression and built for an evo 2.

So with the lower compression ratio, does this mean that you can run the same about of boost? Hope you haven't found any more bad bits in the engine! Have you got it all back together again now mr. Speedy Gonzales?
Thanks

The parts are in the post but I am taking a new direction.
I will be running 9:0.1 compression and lower boost,so more torque at low revs and still well over 300bhp
Also I will be able to rev a fair bit harder as i am inserting a set of H beam rods.
I have been told lots of times the stock rods are marginal on reliability so I have bit the bullet.(I dont want my new pistons making a break for freedom ;))

I had a test today that went fairly well eventualy.
I had a few problems with my fuel map (I was way too rich trying to be safe)
But once i got that sorted and just running 8psi the car went well (not bang)
At a wet very cold and very windy Kames the car was ace sliding all over the place and felt like it was impossible to crash
I have a further test on Sunday and plan to up the boost a fair bit.
Here is a video but no volume as the wind noise is horrendous.

It is so easy to drive I cant believe it,I havnt adjusted anything yet and I can slide it in all over the place and feel like I know what I am doing
Its going to be loads faster than the Wolf.
I am strugling with boost control my ECU can control it but I dont have a boost controler for it :(

My manual controler from the Wolf is rusty inside and even its playing up ????
