does anybody know how to tell the difference between ECU's that have the built in immobilizer, and the ones that dont? Or the model year that the immobilizers came in? i'm going to get a 1.6 or 1.8 engine from a rover 200 complete with ECU and wiring loom, and i really dont want to have to sort the immobilizer.

I could be wrong but I think all the "damp" liner engines - 1600, 1800 and the 1400s without the cross hatching on the rear of the block were fitted with the plastic inlet manifold/plenum and the 5AS immobiliser.
Getting the immobiliser from the same car as the engine is not such a problem (mounted behind the dash in front of the driver) but not many scapyards seem to have the alarm key/blipper for the car and then you are in Rover dealership territory.
I believe there are companies which can remove the immobiliser function from the ECU but I havn't used one.
Best of look, I think they are a great engine - just bought another 1400 gti engine today for £60! :D
