Due to lack of skill I went down the easy route and bought a k-series conversion on ebay. It was originally done by a member of 16v, MiniRio but has been through a couple of other owners until i got may hands on it. I have no space or tools to do anything myself and rely on mechanics to do any work i need.

The car has been set up for track use at some point and has rock hard suspension and seats. I am mostly using it as a fast road car so mostly want to make it more drivable on the road without compromising on performance too much.

I wanted to start a project thread as there is a growing list of things i want to do and would really appreciate advice on the best way to achieve my goals. I get mixed messages from most of the mechanics i have taken the car to. They don't really know what to make of it.

The car started off as a 1993 mini rio.
now has:

1.8 vvc kseries (dyno'd at 160bhp)
PG1 gearbox with lsd, close ratio 1,2,3 with longer 4,5
AVO adjustable coilovers on the front and Gaz adjustable coilovers on the back.
metro gti vented disk brakes front and metro gti drums on the back
mgf twin pipe exhaust
half roll cage
full body kit

Some pics can bee seen here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/tobycatlin/sets/72157622204682196/

Since owning the car i have already had the gearbox modified to have a longer 4/5th and it will now cruise at 70mph at around 3k rpm. Thanks gazwad for the gearbox man. I havn't managed to redline it in 5th!. It still accelerates brilliantly as 1,2,3 are pretty close.

Current list of jobs:

Rear end
The boot floor has been cut out to make way for the large backbox of the mgf exhaust. This has been replaced very badly with fibre glass and is now pretty rusty. I plan on removing the mgf exhaust which was badly fitted to begin with and is very quiet.
I was thinking about replacing it with a centre exit DTM like, http://www.minispeed.co.uk/content/centre-exit-dtm-tailpipe
Any other suggestions for a exhaust for a k-series? i certainly don't want to compromise performance.

I would either get a flat sheet of metal to replace the fibreglass or get a replacement boot floor if i can fit the exhaust in under the spare wheel well. Would be nice to have a spare tire again
http://www.minispares.com/Product.aspx?ty=pb&pid=33329

I then need to fix up the rear bumper which has taken almighty abuse on the speed bumps of london. It is cracked and chipped and i never really liked it as it a massive slab hung off the bottom of the car. I was going to chop it down so it is thinner and gives more ground clearance. Not sure what i can do to make it look better.

Suspension
The suspension feels like it has been built of iron rods. When i drive over a cats eye it feels like i have hit a pot hole. You can imagine what happens when i do hit a pot hole. What can i do to soften it up a bit? softer springs?
I'd like a full setup done by someone like KAD. Any recommendations for this kinda thing?

Dash board
I have bought a fibreglass dash from "the stig":

I plan to get this flocked in black and fit a car pc, gauges, switch panel and a touch screen

I am not sure what gauges i can use. I am using the standard mems 2j ecu unit. I need at a minimum: rpm, speed, engine temp, oil pressure, fuel. What have other people used with a k-series?
Any advice or ideas on how i physically attach the dash into the car would be great.

I think thats a good start. I have loads more idea and details, that will hopefully build up in this thread. I'll post pictures of progress. Please if you have any advice or recommendations chip in. If you are in the east london area and wanna come have a look at it, get in contact.

thanks

Since putting the car pc in, it'd be difficult to live without it!

Yes, that what i want. Nice work

I have built plenty of computers and am fairly handy with a soldering iron so the PC side of things will be no probs. I am software programmer and have been looking at running android on a net book to provide gps, audio etc.

Can you share any info of how you put that in? Any photos of the mounting would be great. I can see a bolt in the far corner, is it easy to remove and get access behind?

It is a net book that I've used. I took the machine apart and fixed the screen in it's metal cage to the back of the dash board with those tiny bolts that you see. The rest of the machine is behind the dash.

It's running windows xp sp3 with RideRunner software as the front end.

You'd do well to get android running on a net book unless you're a ninja programmer as its only really written to run on certain hardware at the moment.

not sure if i am a ninja but have been programming for a long time. I am a long way off deciding what software to run, i but i'll take a look at riderunner.

To run android on a netbook you need a Android x86 build and you can run this from a usb drive:
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/22665/run-android-on-your-netbook-or-desktop/

It has the advantage of running much faster than xp but the disadvantage of less flexibility. I am also thinking about a ubuntu install with the new unity interface.

but i need to get the dash out of my front room and into my car before i play with the OS ;)

Android is a nice idea, but if you read, that distro is not without issues. Not all hardware is supported and anything installed or any settings changed will be gone after a reboot.

I'll have a mess about with it anyway as I love stuff like that - I have dos and windows 3.11 running on my iPad, and I did have android on my iPhone 2g but the button mapping was well out so you couldn't turn the device off - you had to let it run out of battery power! I've yet to try a different build on my iPhone 4.

Yes i never expected to be a easy job to run android, not that xp doesn't have it issues or ubuntu or anything really.

What did you do about your heater? Did you keep it?
I had really bad misting problems last winter and over the summer i sealed up many leaks in the pipes and vents under the screen. It seems much better so far.

I have no heater at the moment. Copious amounts of rain-ex anti fog keeps my windscreen relatively clear. However, when I rebuild again next year I'll definitely be putting a heater back in as I'm missing my creature comforts!

It's been a while so I guess a update is in order.

exhaust
I have swapped out the exhaust for a centre exit DTM and it is very loud. Children clap their hands over their ears as i go by. The other day i was about to leave a super market car park and fired up the engine. As i did so a man packing his car physically jumped and hit his head on the boot door. No sure if it has improved performance but the cat has been swapped for a link pipe so i should see a few more hp.

Dash
I have added servo driven oil pressure and temp gauges which have already saved me from overheating after a air lock in the water loop. They make a very annoying beep on startup but look pretty cool. I still haven't fitted the stig dash as i need to use the car and from everything i have read it can be a months work to fit a dash. I also need to source a speedo and mine intermittently works. I want a Stack one but costs £200.

The boot floor is being welded up right now. I bought some pretty reasonable panels from minispares and should have room for a spare tyre again. Woot.

While it is having the boot surgery i have asked my mechaniac to deseam the rear as it has already been half deseamed and would look much smoother. The fibrglass rear body kit/bumper has been slowly falling off after my missus reversed into a curb and cracked it. A metal support bar dropped out in a shower of sparks while going down the A12. So i pulled the whole thing off. I am not sure what to replace it with, but have seen some nice rear tunnel diffusers that look cool.

I am planning to take it off the road for the whole winter and sort the dash, replace the interior and do some body work. It badly needs a respray but after seeing Wheeler dealers episode where they vinyl wrap a mini with a carbon fibre effect for £200 i am thinking that might be the way to go.
