after looking at all the fun you guys are having, ive decided to start my build diary, ill try and update as much a possible with pictures. well i started in feb with a 1989 shell, my biggest aim was to make the car look like a mk1 and no extended front ,I was going to use a vauxhall 2.0 red top but bad reviews of the transfer box, I decided to go honda (the power of dreams) i was goin to use a b20 but my uncle had a 2.4 accord ivtec so that was the plan, but first i had lots of rust to contend with. I have put he pics on photobucket for you all to see as i cant quite get the hang on putting them on here:confused:

dont meen to doubt you, but is that engine not awfully low compared to the shell?! in terms of sump Vs floor height? loving the fab work :)

06-10-2010, 03:50 PM
hi matey, how big was the sheet you used for the floorpan? guessing its full width and not joined under the transmission box?
also, will you be putting the x member back in, or leaving it as is?
considering doing this myself but concerned if itll pass that silly IVA test..

Hi just to clear a few questions, after mounting the engine I can raise it level with the floor so the two main subframe rails are level with the floor.
I will measure the floor up if you wish, I made the tunnel the made the other bits the tunnel was made level with the bottom of the steering rackfor max room, the seats will be bolted to the cage I plan on running two tubes from side to side and bolt the floor to that so it don't flap about and also bolt the seats to

Hi There ,
What kind of wheels are on the car ?
I suppose 13 x 8 ?
Are they mini offset / PCD ?
Price / supplier ?
Love your project BTW
kind regards , Harald

Looking good, some nice fabrication work going on. Just to echo what Denis has said, your engine and frame looks pretty low so well worth double checking things before you get much further into it.

Hi the wheels are 13 x 7 ultralites they was 250 at mini in the park I think they were of midlands wheels , the subframe is two inch below the body, it's only tacked up at min, wanted to get engine sat in the cradle so I could get the correct hight, the sbframe and engine will be moving up two inch so it's all level, the floor on the car is 1 inch higher up than a standard mini so it can sit realy low on track days,
Thanks for all the coments it's always better to get a second look on things .
peaty_34

Sorry the wheels are mini offset but I've used ford studs
MarkLD
07-10-2010, 09:26 AM
The higher floor makes it look worse in the photos. Sounds like you've got it all under control, keep up the good work and keep the photos coming.:D

07-10-2010, 05:17 PM
Very nice indeed. Sounds like lots of neg but just trying to help. The offset on your wheels will give you major grief by pulling you all over the road. Make sure you have enough room to swap the wheels for something less carlos fandango, and therefore bring them in a bit more central to the hub. Will run a lot straighter under load.
One of those realy nice ones that come up every now and then :vtec::cool:

Thanks for the help cooper_mark. I was unsuccessful with a search for his album. After viewing the album I was impressed with the radical approach to rebuilding the front bulkhead and frame design. Well done peaty_34!
I am interested to find out how the pattern was made for the rear arches. It must be laid out on a flat surface and then cut and bent to shape at the rear location. How difficult is it to make a template for one of these?
Do you lay out a half circle the size you want for the outer edge and then pick a spot to go perpendicular? Is the side that abuts the car just a larger circle? How does one determine the sizes? I'm not much good at geometry! Thanks JS

hi strudle ive cut the standard mini archers out biggerso they are 660 wide i am a ducter buy trade no and got the idea from a fitting we make and fit, you need to make a circle,
the outer diameter of your arch, then draw a circle of the inner diameter of the arch in the middle of the big circle, cut them out in half the roll.

hope this helps

Thanks for the info. I guess I was on the right track after all. I would make a light cardboard template and then adjust the shape for the body and then cut out of metal. Perfect. Thanks for the clarification. JS

taking you gona be runing her slammed by the look or them year arches. and does the a.4 fit in the standard round nose?
peaty_34
11-10-2010, 07:03 PM
Yeah she'll be running low, the only reason it fits is due to the bulkhead, it's been moded to fit, it will also fit a k20a2 in as well as they are both the same size.
Small update started making the front subfame again looks 10x better than the first I'll get pics up asap

hi not sure of power, but with all the emissions crap off and a omex ecu, and a k20a2 head, i think 200 bph is possible, then next step when done is aa supercharger :D

is that roughly in the right position , the drive shaft is really going to have to angle forward allot from the Diff , allthough being a CV it should be ok ...
cant wait to see more

Hi not sure about suspension yet I think strut cause I'm using corsa hubs. The arm will be going thier I don't really like the angle but I've seen slot worse and still working.

The frame looks really neat.
It does look very tight to the engine and gearbox. is the frame going to be fully welded or bolted togther in places to make removing the engine or gearbox easier?
Also where did you get the brackets that you have hanging from you subframe for the bottom arms? did you get them cut or make them yourself? as i could use some for my frame.
peaty_34
24-10-2010, 10:35 AM
hi tony thanks the frame will be welded up when complete with the n/s being removable ill take pic for you next week, the brackets i made at work. i cut out 8 squares the same size, clap them all together, run a weld down each side then drill and shape they all be the same then.

I love the look of the tubing, it reminds of spondon or harris m/bike frames, street fighterish perhaps? Good stuff.
'scuse my ignorance but what does "all wheel drive mean"?? I guess it's not 4 wheel drive is it?
peaty_34
29-10-2010, 06:21 PM
Hi thanks for the coments I use tube cause it' looks miles better than box and I think it looks alot more professional, I've always called it all wheel drive cause I beleve that when people say 4 wheel drive they think land rover, this is no land rover, so I say all wheel drive as to not confuse

what size is the tubing you're using on your front sub-frame, and what type of bender do you have? I have a floor standing hydraulic tube bender. do you guess and bend by eye what you think will be ok and suit?
peaty_34
30-11-2010, 12:11 PM
Hi arty for late post been in the big USA, with my m8 Micky mouse:-D the tube is 35 ish of and 3 mm thick, a hydr bender is ok but it tends to crush the tube if it's to thin

ok another update got some nice big discs for the front and wilwood four pot for the front and the matching wilwoods for the back. The huge problem arose when i put the disc on the hub and sat the brake caliper on the disc, then put the wheel on  i need a 30mm wheel spacer. and i dont do spacers so it looks like making my own hub, more fab work, ill post pics as soon as i get time, so the corsa hubs are out the window, the plan is to us a ford Ka wheel bearing as it fits the big vauxhall flange, make a hub with a 60mm nose like a mini hub (the bearing carrier) and fit the disc like zcars do on their front, lots of machining and welding but well get their.

peaty_34
12-02-2011, 05:36 PM
hi minidream your right its out of a accord then bolted to a crv 6 speed box, i have been told they run a 189 bph but ill take a the emissions rubbish off i think 200 will be their, then with a eaton m62 or m65 bolted to her she should fly, thats the plan
minidream94

hmmm, would be interesting if you had decided to use the diesel out the accord bolted to that box and awd, that would be a massivo beast (L)

What are you planning regards ducting the radiator.. ?
Its a bit of a pain..
I'm still working on a proper solution to airflow on our rear mounted rad..
strudel
15-02-2011, 10:52 PM
I'm with Spiyda on this question regarding ducting. Since I have a van I had planned two rear small rads, one on each side, with a duct in front of each rear wheel. Running the water lines may be a bit of a chore but I think my methodology will work well with some good planning. Hope to see more on this project. I may have missed out on which year CRV 6 speed tranny you are using, could you elaborate. Thx. JS

Hi been working away and just come back to this
http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa472/peaty_34/83e75e76.jpg
As for the ducting I plan on taking air from the bottom if that dosent work I'll take air from the rear windows, and as for getting the air out, I am planing to make the parcel shelf sit at 45 degrees, so it's higher than the window so air will rise out of the bottom of the window, the windows will be perspex, if all else fails I'll go out the boot but thats last option, and the gearbox was of a 2007 crv

Will you not have bleeding issues with the rad at that angle? I would suspect there to be an airtrap right at the top of it unless you maybe add a bleed to the top corner?

Might just be the pics but will the tank not be slap bang in the middle of where the airflow should be coming from? I presume you are wanting fresh air flowing up from under the car to feed the rad.
Would two smaller tanks either side be better?
Just a thought.

Those hoses work well, but I'd recommend passing them through a bulkhead grommet etc. Despite having them "mounted" rigid, vibration etc will see them fret against the sharp edge of the bulkhead.
Alloy rad's like to move around when they heat/cool so dont like to be mounted too rigidy.
Interesting build I reckon.....

I presume the Cooper badge is a tongue-in-cheek nod to its origins and not actually part of a 'sleeper' look??
Well done so far, it's all looking great.

i wanted a sleeper look but if its going to be a road going race car, ill lose the sleeper look (vents in boot, vents in valance and vents in, A panels) but apart from that, its standard length, i think ill have her old english white with black roof and black wheels, have two filler caps like a cooper s and all the right features of a mk1. (mk1 boot, lights, door hinges) only we'll no ;)

is youre pedal box not mounted upsidepown?
kcchan

Its a floor mounted pedal box, flip it the other way and the pedals would be in the wrong order and you'd have dual MC clutch etc
