Having purchased a Mini City a while ago, I think it’s time to start a thread.
I purchased the car off a member on another forum... Please check take a look at his thread first. ; Its defiantly worth a read as the previous owner has done some really good quality work on this car!

As my user name would suggest I plan on going the Vtec route with regards engine setup. I have spent many many hours on here and other forums researching various homemade subframes and have decided to fabricate my own to mount the engine.
For the rear I have decided to use a rear beam axle with offset coilovers using the original radius arms. I need to replace the complete rear arches and would prefer not to have to modify the new rear arches.
I am still undecided on wheel size… 10’ 12’ or 13’s ??
I like the look of 10’s but correct me if I’m wrong you are limited with regards brake setup? And there will be issues with final drive ratios..
Since getting the car some of the outstanding metal work has been finished off. The complete underside/bulkhead was taken back to the metal and was given two coats of anti rust primer. The weld joints were then seam sealed and that’s about where we are at the minute…

And that folks is where we are the the moment...
One arch semi-tubbed and the other is cut and ready to take some new metal...
As you can imagine there is a lot of work to be done on this car.. Progress is slow but I'm getting loads of help from the missus :o ...
I've owned the car for about 5 months.. Maybe in two years this will be a vtec beast? I will be making my old subframe to hold a B18C under the standard length round nose. I'm even considering a JRS! Will a car weighing approx 600kg with approx 200bhp need a JRS? It would be about 330bhp/tonne without the charger.. With the charger it should be near 400bhp/tonne!
The plan for the car;
I want to be able to use the car all year round, so it will need some creature comforts! some sound deadening and carpet! Maybe even a radio.. Weight is a priority so unless its necessary it will not go in the car.
Have many people on the forum weighted there converted Mini??
Just looking for some figures, Honda, Vax, Suzuki etc.. Cheers!
I have got a TDK rear beam to be fitted and a 6 point OMP cage. I hope to add extra bracing from the rear turrets to the cage in the rear passengers compartment, also somehow connect the cage to the front subframe.. It should give some extra rigidity.. Or maybe too much??
Questions and comments are welcome... :o
Would anyone in the area (Wilts, Berks, etc...) be willing to bring me for a short spin in there vtec mini???
Thanks for looking!

It will be a lot of work to get the weight down to 600kgs, I think thats about the weight of a race car. There is a lot of weight in the doors, glass, bootlid etc.. Rollcage is adding weight back, but v. sensible. Whatever weight it should be more than quick just with a VTEC. Go for it - maybe 2 years schedule could be reduced...

Thanks for the reply..
I was planning CF bootlid & front end. Perspex for the windows apart from the windscreen (crap I need to look into that??).
I agree the doors are quite heavy and the FG doors are not really for everyday use..
Maybe I'm a little over optimistic?
I said 2 years because of funding/time to spend on the car etc... I have the car for about 5 months and you can see in the above post what has been done.. Not a lot!

Seems to be going well. Just it's all about bodywork and getting the shell sorted on your build. I wouldn't worry about the weight right now. I bought a fibreglass bootlid, perspex and lightened doors, but have decided it's better to get the basic conversion done first, then those bits can be done later after it is up and running, mot'd etc. Your better off just aiming for standard mini weight, if your adding a cage.
I think the major challenge is designing and building your own subframe to get the engine and gearbox under a standard length front end.... it's all good fun though .. I think. :)

Some real nice work there :D
I replaced my inner arches but 'tubbed' them first. Was really easy to do this way and meant no join all the way round.
See my build diary (page 1) and page 2 shows my woes with the fibreglass doors.

Hello David,
Thanks for the reply. I did consider modifting the arches before I mounted them to the body, but I was concerned I would not be able to mount the modified arches in the correct location...
They are almost complete now :) But won't be posting for a while as I off on holidays for two weeks.
Thanks,
Jason

I wish I had thought about arch placement a little more as I did weld the nearside one in a bit squint and had to hack it, bend it and weld it back
Enjoy your hols

Just a quick update.
I got a little bit more welding done on the rear arch!
As you can see the welding wire only came through once! All the welding was done form the inside. The metal was previously coated in zinc rich primer.
http://i817.photobucket.com/albums/zz100/B18c-Mini/IMG00361-20100903-1733.jpg
Welded some tabs on to the arch and held it tight to the body work with some bungee cords, then tacked the arch to the body.. I'm making good use of the free stickers which came with the Mini Mag

Been away for the past two weeks so progress on the car has been a little slow.
The good new is I have almost completed tubbing both rear arches!:p

http://i817.photobucket.com/albums/zz100/B18c-Mini/Mini/IMG_5171.jpg
Welded some scrap bits of metal onto the arch, this made it a lot easier to 'clamp' the arch to the body when welding.

I have almost completed the body work, it's very time consuming work as many of you know...
Next step is to start fitting the cage. Need to weld some plates to the floor where the cage will sit, and also make a start on fitting the ream beam...
Thats about all for now.

Had some help with the car last weekend... Cheers Chris!
Got the rear subframe mounting brackets above and below the boot floor mounted..

Rear valance is also fitted, all welds ground back flush and painted in primer but I have not got any pictures yet...
Then I ran out of welding gas :mad:
Getting a 3ft bottle been delivered to work on Tuesday, so I didn't bother going to Machine Mart to get screwed on their disposables!!
As the gas was out I cut a few small rust patches and made up some repair panels..

New section is now in place, much better than before... Pictures to follow soon
Next job on the list is to get the cage mounted into the car! :D
It's an OMP cage.. Link (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/AA/104P/70-OMP-BOLT-IN-ROLL-CAGE-CLASSIC-MINI-COOPER_W0QQitemZ180556192580QQcmdZViewItem?rvr_id= 154916120136&rvr_id=154916120136&cguid=c84875391290a0e2057038b0fffb5e0d)

It's been a while since an update...
I got the tubbing complete, much happier with the fit now! A cunt of a job! But well worth it....

http://i817.photobucket.com/albums/zz100/B18c-Mini/Mini/IMAG0479.jpg
Also got the boot floor to arch stiffener brackets in place
http://i817.photobucket.com/albums/zz100/B18c-Mini/Mini/IMG00538-20101010-1623.jpg
Welded in a small section and ground flush, just below the roof line.
http://i817.photobucket.com/albums/zz100/B18c-Mini/Mini/IMAG0350.jpg
Filled in the redundant wiper holes
http://i817.photobucket.com/albums/zz100/B18c-Mini/Mini/IMAG0338.jpg
Offered up the rear beam, took ages measuring:rolleyes:
http://i817.photobucket.com/albums/zz100/B18c-Mini/Mini/IMAG0380.jpg
Then gave it some more height..
http://i817.photobucket.com/albums/zz100/B18c-Mini/Mini/IMAG0386.jpg
http://i817.photobucket.com/albums/zz100/B18c-Mini/Mini/IMAG0395.jpg
Marked all the mounting holes (all 12 of them!), removed the beam punched all the holes, offered up the beam again. (Just to be sure!)

Beam in place
http://i817.photobucket.com/albums/zz100/B18c-Mini/Mini/IMAG0419.jpg
Then I tacked all the plates on the other side of the heal board. Removed the beam again and seamed all the plates on the inner heal board. (Ruins my nice undercoat). I used some 3mm sheet for the plates, they should be plenty strong.

http://i817.photobucket.com/albums/zz100/B18c-Mini/Mini/IMAG0439.jpg
Also go the rear section of the cage mounted through the arches and added some spreader plates for under the floor uprights.

http://i817.photobucket.com/albums/zz100/B18c-Mini/Mini/IMAG0480.jpg
Hopefully during the week I'll be able to get all the welds ground back so they look a little neater...
Should I use spreader plates on the inner arch where the cage is mounted??

Next job is to get my radius arms out, cleaned and replace the all the fucked parts with new ones.

I've been talking to a guy who is going to help me when i get started on my mini vtec. (open to other engine ideas) He has a clubmen. he said its about 670kg. thats usable year round. It has a switch so he can turn the vtec off in the wet. Yet to drive it but seems like a good idea.
So are you lengthing the frount or cutting the firewall out so the block fits in?
i want to get a round nose but people have said the clubmen is the one to go for.
I also want to know about putting the block behind the frount axel if anyone knows anything about that.
Your doing a good job on your mini. I'm looking forward to seeing the finished beast.

Never seen b post legs of a cage that far into the car before? What make is it?
All the ones ive seen have the feet sitting on the slope of the inner sills if you know what I mean. Do your seats still go back far enough?
David.

Hello David,
The cage came with the car when I bought it.. I was told it is an OMP cage <http://www.ybracing.co.uk/page1.php?sitepage=4&area4=&subarea=326&part=8010>. The door bars have to be cut to length, which I have not done yet... It's quite a beefy cage, the main hoop is 50mm dia and the rest of the bars are 40mm diameter.
I know what you mean when you say the uprights should be sitting on the slope for the inner sill... I am having some issues with the angle of the front front leg plates, they dont match up with the angle of the inner sill.... Not sure what to do there, the picture should explain it a little better.
At the moment I don't have any seats to properly measure but I think the main roll hoop should be in an okay position for seating.

Hello Dan,
I'm not extending the front, I'm not fond of the look when you extend the front... Round nose is going to be much much harder but I think it will be worth it in the end... I will have to modify the bulkhead to fit the engine.
If you put the block behind the front axle where will you sit? In the boot?
Cheers for the comments!

The front feet of my safety devices cage dont sit too neatly on the floor anymore, but this is down to welding in new floors, sills etc. Once its all bolted in it will pull abit closer otherwise I will make up internal spreaders.

Cheers David,
The floor sections, inner and outer sills have been replaced by the previous owner... I though the problem was the replacement panels.. Crap! I will have to make up some spreader plates as I afraid if I bolt the cage to the floor with a gap it may pull the car out of line....
My fucking doors may no longer close!!

That's a shame you have to sell up. I was gonna ask you where you live and pop over when mine goes back on the road in a month or so as I think I live quite close to you. Can still take you out for a blast anyway and you may get the bug again and get a new project.

Thats bloody strange... I have chased you up Cricklade road (white Leon Cupra), I was going to contact you asking for a blast in the Mini for some enthusiasm towards my build, but never got round to it... I spent ages looking at your car at Castle Coombe last year...
I think I live very close, Carter Close!
Cheers for the offer, I deffo be up for it!
