Rather than type it all up again, here's a link to my build diary - first link is just a bit about the car, the second is a full diary I'm keeping !! Should help deter people from going to P&L too by some of the last few entries !!!

Both front floor pans are now done, and the drivers side door step - forgot I needed to replace the outer sills too so I've rolled the car onto its side and made a start on one of them, just trying to decide how to treat the inside of the box section from rust while its all open !

One sill now replaced and the mini is back on its belly - refitted the subframe so I can start making some measurements for the engine mounts I'm going to fabricate - hopefully I'll get these 'roughly' sorted over the weekend....

Got the engine hoisted into place on Saturday, found it wont go far enough back due to part of the P&L frame being in the way on the gearbox side. Since the frame seems to use non-existent Honda mounts that they dont know any details of, I've just cut one side off !! Now got to make my own brackets and mounts and try to do a better job than them - shouldn't be too hard !!!!
Right, where's some pics of peoples engine locations.... !

Quick update - all the frame is finished, but all taken off again now so I can carry on with the body work. Replaced the passenger side outer sill, replaced most of the oot floor and started on the rear valence - and found it was faaaaar worse than I thought - Have now cut pretty much one corner of the car off !!!!!
eeek  !!!
Hope I can get it all back together properly !!!!

After all the crud was cut out there's a lot of metal I need to replace !! I'd already bought a rear door step and the 3 parts of the rear valence, but I've got to make a patch for the floor before all of these can be fitted, a patch for the cross member that the subframe attaches to, and make a corner section to replace from just below the rear lights down to the seam :(

Thanks to the weather, I finally had a good excuse to work on the car - it was too hot to carry on with the loft conversion !!! I spent my first day in the garage for 3 months !!!!
Made a few repair sections, and replaced part of the rear valence and boot floor

With the profits from the ugly montego (£125 :) ) I've been shopping on eBay - bought some K&N filters and some trumpets - total about £70 so still some spare !!!
Not sure how you usually mount them, so I've been for a quick play ! Had to cut some 8mm threaded rod long enough to go through the lot and it looks ok, the trumpets dont have a very wide "mouth" to them so not sure how well they'll work - guess we'll have to wait and see !

Started on the third and final piece of the rear valence this weekend, I'd left this side till last as it didn't look too bad and wanted to get the trickey one done first - turned out this side was almost as bad !
I've had to cut out some of the boot floor, part of the cross-member that the rear subby attaches to, part of the rear panel below the lights, part of the box section that form the inner edges of the door frame and the section behind this
Managed to make a few of the repair sections - just one piece left to make below the lights, and the piece of the crossmember that the subframe mounts too.
Also noticed a tiny hole in the heel board on this side too - started stabbing away it with a screwdriver and found I need to replace a 6" section of that too  Got a good few hours in the garage today though - 7 and a half hours in all !!!
I wonder if I'll ever finish the bodywork ???!

Though I'd put a wee update on ! Spent the last few days on my second attempt at part of my inlet manifold.
Since the various parts of jenvey linkages are quite pricey, I decided to have a go at making my own ! I had a few bits and bobs laying about, and recently bought a set of ITB's for a skyline - all I'm using from these for the time being is the throttle linkage ! Kind of ! I've had to cut the mounts apart and use a longer bit of bar to attach the linkages to.
Still got a lot of cutting to do - but you might get the general idea from the pics below :

Actually went in to the garage at the weekend - started work on the other side of the heel board and ended up cutting about 10" of the new sill out again so I could gain access - there's a ton of rust all around the corner so I've got a LOT of repair sections to make
Also just ordered some bits to "experiment" with the rear frame - lots of MGF and MGTF parts from a scrappy  !!! Also some front upper arms from an MGTF as these are designed for coilovers !!! :)
BassAddict
13-10-2005, 08:30 AM
Having repaired most of the heel board, I'm now going to cut the whole thing out and move it forward to give space for the MGTF rear frame  !!!
Spent several hours bolting a roll cage in, and started bracing up the back end ready to remove the heel board and most of the floor.
The subby I got from the scrapyard is missing the tie bars and roll bar so I need to sort those out, so I'll probably buy a set of poly bushes at the same time and use those. I need to get the tie bars before deciding on the location of the frame / heel board as they mount to the front of the frame - I'll probably need to make a recess in the heel board to accomodate these. I'll also need to fabricate some mounts for the subby mounts to bolt to.
BassAddict
16-10-2005, 10:11 PM
Pretty much finished the bracing today - will take a pic when I get a mo and see if anyone thinks it'll need any more :) Starting to get nervous about how much I've got to chop out now - and whether I'll ever finish  !!!!
BassAddict

This is a pic of the bracing so far - please feel free to say what else would be worth adding before I remove the heel board !!!
http://www.16vminiclub.com/gallery/albums/userpics/bracing.jpg
Basically, there's a saloon roll cage fitted - which doesn't reach the wheel arches, however, I've bolted this to a horizontal bar that's tacked to the sides of the estate. I've then run two diagonols from the upper corners of the frame to the lower opposite corners of the estate - welded to a plate on each side thats bolted to the lower door hinge fixings. The diagonals are also welded where they cross over (took bloomin' ages to cut them to the right shape for this !!!)
This is a pic of the MGTF subframe too:

Just curious as to why you are going to all this effort to use an MGTF rear sub versus the oem one? Since I don't know diddly about them hence my question. Is it just because of track width, rear discs and sway bars or does the suspension also come into play? Since I will eventually be finishing my van it will help in the decision to use oem sub or convert to Honda as is my front. JS
BassAddict
19-11-2005, 06:20 PM
Hi Strudel - initially I looked into it as an alternative to the big spacers everyone uses, and I'm weary about the implications to an MOT here in the UK if you cut, widen and re-weld an original frame. First of all I looked at the MGF, then found the MGTF had coilovers as standard and basically an all-round improved suspension design to the MGF. I've since justified it myself in other ways too - ie, I could just as eaily go to rear wheel drive if I wanted to since the MGF/MGTF use a slightly modified Rover 114 GTi (Metro GTi) subframe, so all the bits I've done on the front frame can be transferred to the rear :) ! However, the boot floor / frame I'm making would have to be modified slightly.
BassAddict
19-11-2005, 06:30 PM
This is some pics of the frame I've been making - since I'm cutting the entire rear floor out, I decided to make a frame that the MGTF subframe will bolt to so that I can weld it into the car and then place some sheet steel on to make the new boot floor.
This is what's forced me to remember trigonometry !!!
http://www.16vminiclub.com/gallery/albums/userpics/05111902web.jpg
This is it sitting in the subframe - looks like its a bit wonky in the pics put its just a ropey camera - there's just over 1mm difference in it from end to end which can be allowed for when mounting it.

Finished off the anti roll bar mounts tonight :) Was going to look at getting the frame inside the car but discovered a slight "hitch" - with all the bracing, and part of the floor still in, I can't actually get the frame inside the car as its so big !!!!
I'll need to chop out some more of the floor first - this needed doing anyway, but I wanted to remove as little as poss before getting this section welded in, which, since the floor will be around 3 inches higher than usual, I though was going to possible !
Hey ho - just have to chop the rest of the floor out at the weekend !!!

Getting there !!! I managed to make a few tack weld to hold the frame in place today - I spent most of the day measuring and measuring again - so paranoid about getting the subframe mounting wrong !
The theory I went with was lots of clear plastic tube - used this as a kind of spirit level filling it with water with several high points around the shell to make sure I had it completely level, then mounted two bars right through the car to rest the support frame on, and make sure they were level too - then measured its position relative to the rear, the main cross member and a few other places - just hope I got it right  :?:

Wheels are 14" TSW's that I got off ebay for £80 for the set :) They only JUST clear the anti roll bar mounts - by about 4mm !!! Picture's a bit deceptive as the bodywork doesn't even cover half of 'em !!! Just took a better pic:

When you say extended.... obviously at 4.5" wide theyve been extended width ways, but have the front arches also been extended for extended wings? What kind of quality are they? They sould like they might be the kind of thing im after....

There ok, mine will need lots of filler and prep on them before spraying. But they seem very sturdy. Also measuring my arches they seem to be wider than 4.5"
No mine are 4.5"s wide, it would help if i measured them properly!

I bought my wheel arch for £8 each.
I think they go up to 16 inchs in steel.
You can buy 2 wheels/side as well.
I might buy 10 inch 2 wheels one for front....
I might go and have look my local scrap yard, thet's where I got mine from.

Just popped out to the garage tonight and put the subframe back in place having completed most of the welding on the heel board - just the last 6 inches or so on each side to do - but I want to get everything squared up before doing the ends to make sure its all in the right place :)
The recess on either side of the heel board is to fit around the complience bushes on the subframe which protrude forward a bit !

Well, actually went out to the garage tonight - first time since before christmas !!!
Didn't get much done though - on closer inspection the front of the rear subframe wasn't level - about 7mm higher at one side relative to the heel board which was a bit of worry....
Spent all night lifting the car up again, supporting on bottle jacks and using lots of bits of pipe and some water to get the shell completely level, then jack the rear subframe up and get that completely level, then supprt the heel board so that also level - there's about 0.5 mm difference at the most between any corner of the shell, and likewise for the frame and the heelboard !! Took about 4 hours and lots of headscratching to get it all lined up properly but atleast I'm happier !!! Hopefully I can do some more welding at the weekend and start to make the rear rigid again !!! :)

Made a small bit of progress today - made up the forward-most mounts for the rear subframe - just need to weld them onto the shell but I ran out of time (had a pub-tea deadline!!). Hopefully I'll get that done this week, and once they're in I want to try and modify the roll cage to connect with them - these are the last two mounts to be sorted (8 in total including the anti-roll bar) so it will be nice to get them done - I can then (finally) start to build up a boot floor. rear wings and wheel arches of some description. All the mounts may seem overkill, but I figure if I ever fancy a rear engines setup then this will all be strong enough to do it !!

05-02-2006, 10:47 PM
Finished the mounts and got them welded in - made a small box section type bit to weld them to from 2mm sheet, folded to fit into the rear bins (well, whats left of them !!)
Just got to decide what I'm doing about the roll cage now - ie, where it will attach to at the back....
The section of tube is to fit around the complience bushes at the front of the mgtf frame.

Trailer arches should arrive this week - if I dont modify them I "could" fit the MGTF 16" wheels in them........ ! Hmmm - might look a bit big, but would certainly get around the gearing issue people moan about with vtecs !!!! :)
Think I'll stick with the 14's for now though ! :)
Also ordered some 1.2mm sheet to make the boot floor, and made a plywood template for the floor so I can bash the metal around it to form a "lip" to weld to all the way around :)

Wheel arches arrived today - look like they'll do the job !
Also made my boot floor during the week - one MAJOR prob though - I made it (and the template) based on a load of measurements - but forgot to allow for the fact that where its going is just about the widest part of the shell - so I cant actually get it into position as its too wide to clear the side of the shell around the windows  ARRRRRRRRRRRRRSE !!!!!! Might have to cut the damn thing in half and weld it back together !!!!! That'll teach me for making one nice big panel instead of bodging all manner of scrap metal together in bits !!!

That section of boot floor is now welded in - the "plan" to make some recesses intto it went a bit wrong though - think you need a mahoosive press to make it work ! I made a template out of ply, and had basically a piece to go above and below the panel, but even the sledge hammer couldn't get it to work so now there's a load of scruffy hammer marks in part of it !! Doh ! Oh well - it'll be covered up anyway !

Actually did some work on the car yesterday for the first time in 4 weeks !! Started making the new rear arches and quarter panel repair section -as I'd cut out loads of the rear quarter while "playing" with where the rear subframe was gonna go, I've decided to make the arches and repair section in one large piece - much easier to work with the arches on a small panel than it is "in situ" !
Arches are trailer ones - about £13 each from http://www.autow.co.uk/trailer_parts/Steel_Mudguards_Single_info_390.html
I also made a few template parts from plywood - a frame to sit over the wheel and fit inside the arches so i could locate them, and a template to hammer a curve into the steel sheet to fit onto the arch

Got the MGF steering column - will take some pics of it later if I remember ! The motor looks like it might hit the bulkhead though as it point up at quite an angle - whereas (I think) the motor on the corsa column sits horizontally - not sure if this can be adjusted though...

Bought a few other bits and bobs recently - so I've started on the front suspension :)
Using protech coilovers on the MGTF upper arms (better mounting for coilovers than standard rover 100 / mgf top arms) - have also had to change to MGTF top balljoints as they have a different taper.
The bottom of the protech shocks is quite a bit smaller than my mates gaz shocks that I tried, although I do need to shave a small area off - about 5mm wide and 1 or 2mm deep.
Also wasnt happy with the angle they'd sit at, and since its one of the few area's I've been unable to check for rust, I thought I may aswell open up the end of the bulkhead and shorten it slightly !!! :) Only moved it in about 1cm - any more and the body work back to the a-pilar would've got too tricky !

Not touched it for over 2 weeks :( The mrs keeps dragging me to too many damn kids birthday parties, and when she's not doing that I'm fixing her car !!!
I do, however, have a full day tomorrow "authorised" !!! :) May give an update tomorrow night :)

As promised - I did some work ! The car is now on all 4 wheels with its own suspension for the first time since I stripped it down, in Feb 2003 !!! 3 and a half years down, and still a long way to go !!! Wonder if i'll finish before 2010 ????! :)
Have uploaded some pics but they're waiting approval :)

Nice angle grinder collection.
I assume you are using the trailer arches welded into the front wings to match the rears?

Got fed up swapping between grinder attachments ages ago so bought a load of cheap ones !!!
Yup, will use the same trailer arches at the front - should get that done in about 2008 at my pace !!!! :)

What!
By 2008!?
As soon as that!?
I wish I could say the same!
It looks good mate.
I want to see how you do front.
My mini is in my parents' garage and I'm 25 miles away no garage....
When I buy house with garage and finish decoration... then I can start with my Mini again..
Keep up the good work!
Cheers

...now we“re getting some where! Looking good. Did you use the MGF upper arms to get the coil overs further down or was there an other thought to it? I use the upper arms from a metro and they points up with a 45 degree angle. Doesn“t look the best but I hope it works.

Yup - used the MGTF top arms - you have to use the MGTF upper balljoints too as they're a different taper into the arm :) Make's the coilover mounts much better in my opinion :)

Discovered last night that there may just be no possible way of using the overhung tilton pedal box, and the MGF column - the master cylinders and column want to share the same space - unless you sit one oddly to one side -so either steering feels funny, or the pedals would be a right pain to use !! Will have another go at the weekend ! :)

Spent a bit more time on the pedals / steering column and its not "too" bad now - its by no means perfect, but, its about as good as its gonna get - and good enough to live with more importantly !
Pedal mounts are done, and steering column mounts are about half done - should hopefully finish it at the weekend :)

Unbelievably - I actually got permission to go and play in the garage today !!! Spent the day doing some more work on one of the rear arches - this one I first started in April believe it or not - did a few small welds to hold it place - then left it as bare metal for 8 months ! Still need to do some mild hammering, but thought I'd best slap some primer over it incase its another few months till I'm able to go out to the garage again - took a fair while just to de-rust !!!

Had actually considered sending it to the 16v shop !! I'll get there eventually one way or another - although end of feb and my limited spare time is halved probably since baby number 2 will be here ! Then again - I might just move out to the garage to live !!!!!!!
