View Full Version : Shiny New Spanners
This might be a silly question......
It was my birthday last weekend, and I was the proud recipient of a bunch of Halfords vouchers (Thanks Mum&Dad).
I don’t really shop in Halfords that much, but I do like the Flexi Ratchet Spanners they sell. My little 13mm flexi is very dear to my heart and has saved my skin (literally) on many occasions.
Question:
I’m going to buy a few more of these beauties, but I’m not sure which sizes to get. If it were all mini, then I’d be going for 7/16, ½. 9/16 etc, but I’m not really up on Metro tools.
What are the “must have” spanner sizes for K-series conversions..

8mm, 10mm, 13mm, 14mm, 15mm, 17mm, and 19mm give you a good selection, but obviously a full set will be better

If you wait till christmas time - or just after - the tools are usually on 'special offer' so you may get more for your 'money'.
The imperial stuff i've only ever seen as a 'rigid shank' set. These are also not available seperately.
The metric stuff is available in flexi head and rigid. The rigid is available separately, the flexi-head stuff not.
I recall the imperial set i purchased 18 months ago was £44.99 - the metric flexi-head was £39.99.
I also purchased a couple of spare 10mm, 11mm and 13mm rigid spanners.
Note to the wise - if anyone is headign to the USA, you can purchase seemingly identical spanners from a few different companies. The name is virtually always 'Gearhead' and the price is $40-$60 a set - quite a saving!
Thanks..
I think it all depends on where you live. My Local Halfords only does flexi heads separately, whereas my next local one only does sets...

pah, just get a shifter job done :P although
11mm fits a 7/16
13mm fits a 1/2
14mm fits a 9/16
and vice versa, near enough anyway, 13mm's been the most used as 8mm bolts are a handy size so they hold everything together. and you can get boxes of them at homebase in handy 25mm length

use the correct spanners, 13mm spanner aon a runsty minis 1/2 icnh bolt is askign for a skint knuckle and a rounded bolt  you wil then need to hammer a 12mm socket on to the rounded 1/2" bolt to remove it :P
11mm is near enough 7/16" though
i didnt think 14 fitted on a 9/16th bolt, or was it the other way round?
if you buy halfords kit then make sure you get their professional range, they come with lifetime garenty (spelling?) i broke my mates breaker bar that was about 10 years old, took it there, no reciept, guy behind the counter took 1 look at it and told me to grab another, simple as that :)

YEah, halfords stuff is good for that. In that respect they are better than snap on and other supposedly 'superior' tools. The halfords pro stuff is top bollock, and so easy to get it replaced, unlike the 'specialist' tools from snap on and mac etc
