Hi All,

My Project is going really well so far. I have bought and stripped the 1970 Clubman and I'm very happy with it so far.

I've also bought a Metro GTI (mpi) that I will use as a spin about while I fully prep the clubby.

Question:

I've never driven a Metro GTI before and I wonder if mine has a slight issue.

When accelerating, the car seems to go quick up to 3750 rpm, and then it takes off and goes hell for leather. It's very much like a VTEC, but with more of a change in pace.

Is this normal?

I've also had some starting problems in damp conditions, but I'm holding off on replacing HT leads, Dizzy Cap and Rotor Arm.

Oh, and the metro kicks like a mule on braking, which is ..er... fun!

I've juist checked it again and I'm convinced it's not right.. it's more like 4500 rpm before it kicks in.

the 1.4k is a pretty revvy motor so you do get a nice kick higher up the rev range. however if your having starting problems, whatever is causing this is probably causing less than ideal low speed running, so i'd get it sorted. chances are the dizzy cap and rotor arm are ok, the leads are most likely the culpret, they certainly were for me when i had a few damp-start issues.

Thanks evo.

Before i go out an buy all the wrong bits for twice the price, could give me an idea of what to get and rough idea of cost. I've seen someone quote magnecor leads at £60 a set, not a clue mate!

Just read about your new mate in the Ibiza... nice one!

dont waste yoru money on fancy leads. no need, jsut get a set of leads from a rover dealer or halfords or similar. or carefulyl inspect your current leads for cracking and wrap the appropriate bits in insulating tape if your ona serious budget. also rip the dizzy cap off and give it a visual inspection.

IMHO spending out on fancy HT leads is a waste of money.
A decent branded set will be fine. I got some Bosch ones from Halfords that were on special offer for around £20.

And no 4500 for a kick is a bit high. As Evo says it suggests something aint right lower down.
