Looks just like Rob Halls... ;)

Who built the shell? Rob / Allspeed?

andy b
30-10-2009, 08:49 PM
yes rob built the shell with 20ltxe in it but decided that fitting the cossy engine wouldnt be to much trouble. had to change engine mounts and exhaust because exhaust is on the other side of the cossy lump. dropped engine and gearbox by 2 inches to. I wanted about 300bhp you can get that out of a standard cossy engine to tune the xe up to that power would of cost me a lot more.

whats with the blue turbo?

andy b
31-10-2009, 07:18 PM
sometimes more is less can allways get more at a later date its got to be able to go round corners for me. the blue turbo is gay i no that was how the engine came from the scrap yard sum muppet thought it looked good.
engines off soon for a full recon and new turbo.
what engine you got in yours?

Andy

That will be pretty special, 300bhp is fairly easy from a cossie and in a mini weighing about 700kgs (guesstimate?) it will shift, what size rear tyres are you going to try and use?

Mike

andy b
01-11-2009, 08:11 AM
got 13 by 8 wheels with 185 dunlops tyres should be enough grip i hope.
what power are you running with the honda?

Quadra
01-11-2009, 02:20 PM
Just the normal 150-160 bhp, but I have a Cossie powered kit car as well which runs 330 bhp through 215 wide tyres, I would have thought that you might be able to use wider rear tyres on those rims if you can find some with the right profile. I think Sierra's used 205 wide tyres as standard with 204bhp. Some of the guys on here run 195x45x13.

andy b
30-11-2009, 01:54 PM
Not knowing much about zcars figures or mine I can't really say
I no mine is basiclly the same set up as robs apart from engine wich has a posible 350 400bhp being resricted by radiator and intercooler robs is 280bhp I think.
Then theres weight a zcars kit must b lighter than mine so will be very interesting: I can't wait to find out.

2lrMiniVan

im using the standard t3 to start with which should get anything up to 350 depending on internals and age of turbo.
what stage are you at with yours?

just getting the rst manifold welded to fit the vauxhall and biting the bullet and buying a sbd inlet to mate the cossy inlet to the engine
been told when i bought the t3 it was a hybrid ill wait and see when i have it rebuilt what i gather off the ford forums is you can fit the t4 compressor wheel in the t3 housing with a little machining and thats how they make it a hybrid

The plus side i hope is ill keep the ar of .48 so it might not give the power of a t34 escort turbo but should spool quicker not looking for 450 bhp yet lol

mines in vauxhall builds its the gtm rossa

nearly went down the same route as you when i saw Rob Halls car great idea to shove a cossy lump in it

Depends on if you're talking Bike Engined or TypeR/Volvo T5. The cornering ability on the car engined versions isn't perferct. Suffer from understeer.

Theres a good race vid on you tube which shows a comparison of bike engined mini versus other car engined cars.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MSbSjXU-RZ4

There is no doubt that the bike engined z cars are quick off the line (due to weight and traction) and very late on the brakes (again possibly due to the lack of weight). Got to hand it to Chris, he has a great design which has been very popular, despite the cost.

andy b
01-12-2009, 09:38 PM
yeah Ive seen that before they are very impressive cars. id like a bit more comfort in mine everyone ive spoke to say you cant hear anything in the car apart from the engine need to sort a decent sound proof bulkhead.
haven't seen many on the forum though: the Honda seems popular.

andy b,

Would you perchance have a better view closer up of how the strut/coilover was made to fit onto the hub. Reason I ask is that i will be using a torsion bar setup that has a front strut. It's not designed to be able to take a coilover as it would hit the tire/rim. If I can offset the bottom mount inward a bit with a similar top construction as yours I could use a coilover in lieu of a stiffer T-bar. JS

OK, I think I go it figured out. It took me a while to find the RD716 Front Strut body on the net. I had to rethink my situation versus yours and then it hit me like a rock. I'm thinking FWD and yours is RWD. No wonder I couldn't figure out how a drive shaft worked on that system. Silly me!

Now that I understand that it is a spindle for the front of a RWD it makes perfect sense. BUT the site I found didn't elaborate how that strut works. Is there an insert that goes into the RD716 tube? That can't be the complete unit. If so, what brand is the balance of this system?

What we are looking for is a different strut system to use on a FWD Honda system pre 88. It is a 1987 CRX MKI and has a torsion bar front suspension with a strut. In order to lower the car we usually destroy the front strut eventually and there is no aftermarket support any more. We were hoping to augment this system with a shorter coilover rather than thicker torsion bars. Plus they don't make Konis for them anymore. JS

Line lock, first time I've seen something like that. It must only work if the rear brakes are on one system. Since I also own a Honda it has split braking diagonally in the car. I believe it was a brake failure safety feature. Are there units that work in this type of system? JS

andy b
01-03-2010, 03:44 PM
No it only works on a front and back system.

miniphile
02-03-2010, 04:28 AM
Honda it has split braking diagonally in the car

that sounds bad i would of thought that it is better to have either the two fronts or the two rears working together if there is a failure. as that would help keep the car straight.

Not really, if the fronts fail and the rears lock then you'll struggle to keep the car straight.

Hi Andy,

Good to see it progressing well

Those rear door cards are a blast from the past! Mini "Jet Black" special edition? I got a set of them for my Mini when I was serving my apprenticeship at Longbridge, the "Jet Black" / "Red Hot" special editions were in production then!

Cheers

should be around 350 with a possible 400 at a later date with a change of injectors and remap.
It also has an adjustable boost valve wich will help with road/track settings as I think that sort of power Is to much for the road.

Not really had any trouble, leaky sump gasket, failed ignition amp and a slightly worn turbo:rolleyes: other than that it has been fairly reliable. Just had a T34 turbo rebuilt by a guy I know who works at CR turbos, I run about 22psi which gives about 300bhp, in a 750kg car it flies. You will love your Mini when its done, the torque is what makes them fun, they just pull and pull.

I am still running a t3 at the moment, but when the engine is rebuilt I will try the T34 I have, it has a 0.48 exhaust housing on it, so it should spool up fairly quick, or thats what i am hoping.

Going to leave the compression standard and look to achieve about 330bhp and about the same amount of torque. My car has a 4WD gearbox and they are not as strong as the T5, so I don't want to push my luck. The T3 doesn't like 22psi, so thats why I have gone for a T34 with 360 bearing etc.

330 will still be quick, so I take it your kit car runs with 4wd haven't seen many kit cars with 4wd most are rwd.
The t34 seems to be the one everyones using it will be man enough for what you want.:D

Quadra
29-05-2010, 04:36 AM
Yes its a Dax Rush Quadra, basically a 4wd Sapphire Cosworth without the bodyshell. The T34 is a tried and tested route to 330bhp and should be reliable as well without costing the earth. Better more modern turbo's are available but not for the same amount of money, over the years I have tried all sorts of different power settings from standard 220bhp up to 380bhp, I reckon somewhere in between is a good compromise in a light car, but good mapping and driveability is key.

andy b
29-05-2010, 01:33 PM
Yeah think you hit the nail on the head there (driveability).
For me less is more sometimes if it doesn't corner good it ain't no use to me.
I've got adjustable boost so that will need a good play with before I find the right power setting, I maybe never need the full boost.

The tank is made by rob hall to fit the conversion it's not alloy either just sprayed to look like it.
With wanting to get weight over the back wheels I decided to not go for the lighter alloy, every little helps they say.
If your looking to get a tank made try pro alloy I recomend there work.

It's pretty much standard apart from bigger turbo / injectors.
It's had a total rebuild though, rebore, pistons, etc. 360bhp on full boost the engine should be good for 400 without changing any internals. Don't think I'm gonna need that though.

Can't say I've ever heard that. No engine is bullet proof though, I'm hopeing mine will be reliable, I was told by Harvey Gibbs the bloke that built it that it should take that sort of power all day, that remains to be seen though.

I found the last bit of my build the hardest, when you have done 12 months work & then right at the last minute you have a stupid problem. It is awesome the first time you hear it fire up, but the best bit is the first time you floor it & it goes the way you had hoped it would:D

With the extended front I may have to use group7 or something like that. Will cross that bridge when I get there.

Hi matt

thanks for the comments, I allways wanted to build a fast mini but never wanted to divert from what I had in mind, I've done that to the best of my skills ( which are pretty limited ) it just means it's taken me ten times longer to finish.

Andy read this:
http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm

My views were the same as yours, however after talking to several very good mechanics I did not run my engine in & so far it has been fantastic. The power figures I am getting are very good for the setup & my car has now done well over 500 miles. Just about every mile has been flat out & my car is driven very hard, except for corners, I am a bit slow with them:)
The oil has been changed after every event though:)

That's a very good read, very interesting, but ill have to go with the bloke who built the engine (harvey gibbs) who builds race, road, track engines he said the engine has been on the dyno for some time at high revs low revs etc to bed in the rings, the 500 miles is to wear in the rest of the engine.
He did say not to drive it like a pussy though, at about 4 grand in the gears witch will be a fair pace.
I've spent to much money on the engine to have it fail.

Thanks andy

Good read about running-in there Jerry! I'm building engines for a job and so we learn a lot about the running in and assembly process etc. Nice to read something that ties in with just what we say. The rings bed in within seconds so as long as the pistons and rings have been inserted DRY you'll be sorted.
